Oil soaked belt on those p2 Volvos love to throw the belt and suck it into the timing cover behind crank pulley and then throw the timing belt. The crankcase vent usually over pressure the system and blows oil out of all the seals and out the dry rotted vent into the spark plug holes. Edit: crank pulley not crack pipe. Hmm. Auto correct is calling me out

It doesn't even have 200K on it!? How? All of the cars I have owned, but one, had over 100k and ended with well over 200k. I haven't owned a VW, but I would imagine they are built with similar quality to a Toyota, GM, or Ford.

you have to install a new timing belt and all the seals, to honest that is a car that shows lack of maintenence the cost of all the repairs excede the valuue

Bought one of these for about $500 in similar condition… Mine had a bad timing belt tensioner, and the belt flopped off when I took that cam cover off! For a DIY, these parts are cheap, as others have said, too expensive to pay to have fixed, esp with all the other issues. Oil leak could be the common Volvo PCV system failure, but also could be exhaust cam variable valve pulley. That single pulley is more expensive than the rest of the timing components.
Cars like that need to pass go and straight to the junk yard!

Motor mounts and a crank seal and it would probably last another 100,000 miles. It will still look like a hoarders car but It will get from point A to point B.

Beats me why the owner brought it in in the first place. It was obvious from a walk round that the car was beyond economical repair. It's had a hard life, time to put it out of it's misery and break it for parts. At least that way someone else's S40 might get a new lease of life.

It's impossible that every single thing in that car was designed so poorly as to disintegrate so. Some gorilla drove that thing for years. Hit every pothole, curb, parking block… at full speed. Manhandled every knob, control. Literally as if you were told you cant use any tools, but you can wear heavy leather gloves, and do all you can to break everything you can think of. Maybe loaned to someone who just HAAAATES the owner, but the idiot owner keeps letting the shrek borrow it? Just weird

i pressed the video due to the volvo part on the thumbnail.
just got from the garage. did a front wheel bearing, driveshaft and some trans oil replacement on a S40 II. WHY did ford put those CRAPPY wheel bearings on those car's? need to have specials tool for the smal ones (78 mm) and one for the big one (82mm) that STUPID!.
btw.. dont that car suppose to have a upper torque mount? was it missing?
oil leak is from PCV system being clogged.. normal fault. overpressure the engine and blow out all the seals if you dont get it in time.
crankshaft seal is part og the oil pump in front of the engine.

On a side note. I live in California. Why did I catch whatever had??? WHY?
