Let's grab a laser beam and fix that squeaking belt! SAY WHAT!? In this video we use a laser pulley alignment tool to identify a misaligned pulley on this GMC 6.0 that is causing one nasty belt squeal. One of the most over looked items when folks are trying to diagnose a belt squeal is pulley alignment. As you will see in this video, it doesn't take much. -Enjoy!

What if you just bought one of those long stainless steel meter rulers and just confirmed that they line up correctly? 🤔 Seems it could work

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Neodiy.c0m says:

Did it cause the car engine to vibrate somehow?

I have that kit. Found a problem on a jeep with that. The ac compressor was starting to come apart. AC worked and wasn't noisy, but the play was moving.

I don't remember where I learned it, but if you are pressing or pulling someing with a screw type tool (like the pulley press in this video), and you get to a point where it is too hard to tighten, you can tap the end of the screw with a hammer. The shock from the hammer is sometimes enough to finish the job, or at least get another 1/4 turn. Note: this method is not without risk, if you hit too hard you can damage the thrust bearing on the shaft.

Thank you so much for your tutorial, my chevy astro had the same problem, I
re adjusted the power steering pump pulley and the noise disappeared. You are the best, best wishes for you from Las Vegas, NV. Take care man.

What about a serpentine belt that only squeaks for about 30 seconds then goes away

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nex1 says:

Hello Good Stuff my question is my yolk is sticking out a bit so since I have have it flush I should be pulling it out a bit correct? Thanks

Sounds good now No squeaks or Chirps Good video Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Antonio Claudio Michael says:

That chirp and Squeal is pretty bad sounds like a bad bearing to me @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eric G says:

Yes those 6.0 are super fuel efficient. Like 7 miles to the gallon

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Sand says:

Just want to say your analysis of the source of the problem, and how to correct it was superb…My vehicle is no longer shredding serpentine belts! Problem was power steering pulley was 1/8" from flush.'

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Renn says:

I know I'm a few years late but from the video it looks like the alternator pulley is 'out of plane' Does that happen? How would you fix that?

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Electromagnetizery says:

This turned out to be my problem. The guy I bought the car from had straight-edged the pulleys but the grooves were still out of alignment. Belt squeeled like a banshee. I pushed the pulley in to match the shaft and problem solved. Thanks South Main Auto Repair

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Electromagnetizery says:

Dude sounds like Beetlejuice and Ave had a baby.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheyCallMeGunny says:

Thank you, this video helped me diagnose my engine bay squeal (alternator belt pulley alignment.) Didn't help me fix mine, though. But I finally know what the problem is: And that's been my problem all along (not knowing or being able to diagnose the source of the noise.)
Mine rotated from tensioning it over the years. The method to tension it is to leverage a crowbar against the alternator, but it has gradually caused a very slight twisting of the mount over time (1-2 degrees maybe, it's visible but only barely.) Trying to think of how I can fix this without breaking anything lol.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Anthony Sholars says:

Thank you. I was tired of buying $80 fan belts. I bought a laser beam and pulley alignment tool.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars B Souza says:

    Yo

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Beach&BoardFan says:

What if your pulleys are aluminum or titanium?

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mal Daley says:

I had to laugh around the 20 minutes mark you said that you'd have to move the pulley has "gotta go just a smidge, just a hair. not a red one tho" !! In Scotland, the land of the redheads, we say "just a baw hair" meaning just "a testicle hair"……

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Studmuffin says:

So what prevents the pulley from pulling back out?

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sean Collins says:

Mate I’m in Australia and without the beam I can see they are not aligned!!!

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars william bellamy says:

you can clean them pulley grooves with acetone

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lelet Ipiham says:

Thanks, but I’m not clear how you do to the big pulley

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Shane says:

I think I might prefer the belt squeal over the 8 other noises it masked.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg Hamilton says:

Baby powder will stop a belt squeal. Of course if things are out of line It won't help long term!

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Hubbard says:

2 mins, alternator looks crooked but might just be camera angle

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Walter says:

My '97 k1500 with a 5.7 was doing this, I took it to a shop and they couldn't figure it out. That didn't stop them from charging me. Gave me dirty looks when I came back.

Watched this video and checked the power steering pulley, it was in too far by one quarter inch. Got it set in the right place as you describe and haven't heard a single squeak since. Thanks Eric O!

Never point a laser at a camera. You will fry the camera sensor.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars the reptile guyz says:

Add a job that was very similar to that 1 and it did up being the crankshaft What's spinning a little faster Then the outside of the crankshaft The harmonic balancer was literally Starting to separate And I said it had been doing it for months

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Svtford4x4 says:

Freakin sharks with laser beams attached to their freakin heads 😂😂

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tyler Wightman says:

This guy is legit. He knows everything! I went to school for automotive & diesel technology 17 yrs ago, and although I never pursued it as a career I am constantly fixing vehicles for friends, family, and neighbors. I often find myself chasing my tail with certain issues and this would have been one of them! I would have changed the idler, tensioner, and belt….cursed up a storm when it was still squealing, then proceed to change the harmonic balancer, and drive accessories one by one just to suffer a brain aneurysm and possibly a heart attack simultaneously when non of that would have worked! Great job MR. O!

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Iain MacLean says:

drinking game: take a shot every time he says "lazer beam"

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank Allen Jr says:

Had a replacmentt alternator pulley cause a belt squeak. Replaced alt pulley squeak be gone

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Dickman says:

Seems kind of funny that the noise started after installing a new alternator. It would be my guess that the alternator was out of alignment.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bal Loney says:

But it is still not quiet.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars P L says:

You could see the misalignment before you even took the belt off.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Common Sense says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video! It saved me from going crazy trying to find the source of the squeak on my sons dodge pickup. We did just as you instructed and now no noise!

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Allain says:

Had the same problem on a 2003 PT Cruiser. Dealership threw 3 belts at it until I did some research and suggested that it was a pulley that was misaligned.
