Here is a trick to try when changing the crush washer on the oil plug. Take the cap off the oil and put a shop vac in the hole where the cap goes. That will allow you to go underneath the vehicle and unscrew the bolt and you won't spill a drop. Helps if you need to change the crush washer and don't want to change the oil

That's disturbing that water pump failed at only 80k miles.

As I recall, GM uses Dexcool, an OAT coolant which is an orangish color. That looked like the old green coolant which would be ethylene glycol. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Back in my wrenching days the easiest water pump I ever saw was an Oldsmobile Alero… I had to buy a special tool for it (that so far only got used once)…. But it just twisted in/out.

I don't think it had any bolts… Maybe on the pulley… Don't remember

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @shannonharris says:

You know that water pump had to be making noise and owner probably just turned up the radio and ignored it until it became a major leak!

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @wrightcheyenne says:

Wow!! Looking good Loren. Good idea Ray, to have the Wife Unit make an appearance on each episode. Good job on the water pump, Ray. Never seen one like that before, easy repair.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @markmillerstowing says:

I have found that if I soak the belt in soapy water while I change the water pump it’s usually okay and doesn’t squeak.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @rickydonahue1586 says:

I wish the water pump on my car was that easy. Nice job sir! 👍👍

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @GrandPrix46 says:

The coolant he put in there looked like absolute shit compared to what was already in the system. Along with a bunch of hose water.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @rickblanchette says:

I have OCD pretty bad. When I do a water pump I also do all hoses, thermostat, idlers, tensioners and belts. I also flush and purge the cooling system so as not to contaminate the system with undistilled water.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @patrickdiehl6813 says:

Oh yeah, the good old rotary phone…. And the phone booths. Where does Superman change now????

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @m0ondoggy says:

I've changed an LS-1 and LS-3 water pump, but nothing on the newer DI engines. I didn't realize the pump came out of the housing like that. I actually own a 17 Tahoe with a 5.3, but haven't had to tackle this one yet. I'm a little surprised GM didn't just make that all one unit that you have to replace to save costs on manufacturing, but that looks like a piece of cake.

Hi Ray, greetings from Perth, Australia. I’m really enjoying your content even though I’m not a mechanic. Just wondering about the coolant you used. The original fluid was red and you put in a yellow coolant. Does that make a difference in terms of performance? Over here in Oz, we have either red or green and mechs/car manufacturers don’t like mixing or changing.
Plus, I noticed nearly every car you have worked on is an automatic. Don’t people like manual transmissions? I know that here, manuals are becoming rare. I myself have a 6sp manual 6lt V8 which is starting to show her age and developing problems. People tell me to get rid of it but NO! I love my car. Well, thanks for your time, keep up the great content.
    Sean

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @emmettturner9452 says:

Ray, you are my age and I grew up with a rotary phone into the early ‘90s. This is because it was the cheapest phone available from the phone company back when you were required to lease one of theirs… essentially “the free one.” Even after antitrust legislation that let you buy your own my mother continued using the rotary phone from the phone company since they still charged extra for touch tone dialing. It wasn’t until 1997 when we got touch tone dialing since I ran into some computer software that didn’t support pulse dialing (“id Stuff” store on the Quake Shareware CD).

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @jimmyholl9732 says:

I would have put a new thermostat in it too since you replaced the water pump.. but I guess everybody's different I guess

In the 90s I had a 1987 Taurus with the 3.0 and I knew something was up when one day I was suddenly having trouble turning right and hearing minor belt squeak. Turns out the water pump was leaking right on the crank pulley which make the belt almost stop since the crank pulley was slippery from the anti-freeze.

    Your thoughts please …
I’m conflicted with these two statements; regarding my 2010 Maxima with 150,000 miles.
    – If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
    – If it’s new it doesn’t mean it’s good.
Issue: It still has the original spark plugs and ignition coils. Since there’s so much labor changing the rear plugs, do I change the rear coils while I’m there?
If yes, are there coil brands you’d recommend or stay away from?
    Thanks

Talking about the abrasiveness of the shift pads, one job i had we used a 4 inch round pad on a grinder to "grind" away and give a course polish look to aluminum welds. It will EAT aluminum for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 4th meal. Then be so worn out they make fun frisbees to toss at the trash can

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @maxxmich says:

    r h sure that's not tranny fluid…. it's red… dexcol is orange

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @maxxmich says:

wow that's already trashed… great quality ur making GMC

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @ronhale2739 says:

I don’t know maybe it’s just me, but when you have a high tension belt in place, I’m sure there’s a lot of sideload on bearings which include alternator, water pump, tensioner. I remember back in the 90s I was a partsman and we were going through a lot of alternators and what was found was that GM had recommended a slightly longer belt to alleviate excessive tension that seem to solve the problem.

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @TheJimmydan67 says:

so no flushing of the cooling system?….i would think that all that grinding the water pump was doing may have sent fine aluminum shavings throughout the radiator and engine block

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @fubartotale3389 says:

A relatively small, flat sealing surface like that I woukd take so 220-320 cloth backed sandpaper on a fine flat file and bridge the surfaces with the file/abrasive cloth.
This will eliminate aby chance of gouging the surface, and take about as long because you are working a larger surface area than the small rotary pad.
    Just a thought.
