Howdy Folks Good day to you! Welcome back! We are returning to the part Two of this 3.5 L V6 Engine tear down on a 2012 Toyota Highlander Customer had stated that it had some Vbt trouble codes and they wanted the valve cover gaskets replaced. I had Uh. We attempted to diagnose this Uh system a little bit here and we had found that these BBT actuator solenoids were free and clear of sludge. We found that there was no sludge under the valve covers and the timing chains and the phasers uh appeared to be operating as designed.
Now, when we, uh, initially kind of looked over this thing, I had determined that both banks on this engine were setting a trouble code for cam shaft timing. So what that meant was when the ECM attempted to advance the cam shafts for advanced cam timing, uh, it was unable to do so. It had commanded the solenoids to apply oil pressure to the actuator sprockets, but the cams did not respond. What we had hypothesized was that these little gaskets that go here and here were failing to feed the proper amount of oil pressure from the oil inlet port on the valve cover assembly, through the internal passageways, through the solenoids and then out of the Uh, the exit ports and into the camshaft phasers.
We had determined or hypothesized at least that some of this brittle and dried up cracking rubber gasket material right here was causing oil to leak out and it was causing that oil pressure loss. So what we had done is ordered the master valve cover gasket set which came with replacement uh, little seals for uh, those VVT actuators. Now in the first part of this uh of this two-part series on this truck, we uh, we ended up pulling off the front valve cover and that side has already been replaced. We pulled the wiper cow off and removed the intake manifold in order to gain access to the rear cylinder bank so we could pull that cover off.
and looks like I dropped one of the old gaskets. There we go! So anyway, we had to leave off last night cuz the the day was long and I was running out of steam to continue choing along here. So uh, we're now going to pick back up on the rear cylinder head. Uh, we've got the valve cover off.
What I need to do is go ahead and pop out these spark plug tube seals, we can prep the rest of the gaskets, clean up the surface on top of the cylinder head over there, apply some sealant, and then we're going to get that guy reinstalled with three more spark plugs that are going in the rear cylinder bank because why not change the plugs while we're in here? Uh I don't think those were the originals, but they did show a little bit of wear and slightly excessive gap on them. So uh, as a preventative maintenance measure and for good, uh, good practices, we're going to go ahead and replace uh those plugs as well. So let's pluck off this perimeter gasket around the cylinder head. and and then we'll go to work on that valve cover gasket.
Over Yonder And uh, we'll get this thing reassembled and back together. So stay tuned cuz this is going to be a very interesting part. Two, Part one down. this video's description below hings the hood. Look who that guy is. All righty. First things first, let's get rid of the last of the old Parts here. and that's going to be this, uh, perimeter gasket that's kind of stuck to the cylinder head.
There's a little bit of RTV sealant hold it on right here and another spot back there. So we're going to peel all that stuff away and scrape off the old sealant. Then we can wipe this, uh, wipe this ceiling surface down and the head will be prepped. There we go.
Oh, it broke and it's stuck. Come here, You got it. Yeah, that's it's. not looking too fantastic.
This gasket is also getting a little brittle that shouldn't have broken the way that it did. See that? let's see if oh gravitas, see if it's going to crack more gravity? Look at that little hot mess over here. Yeah, we're seeing some cracking action going on. Look at that.
This gasket is definitely compromised. No buo, look at notes. okay scraper coming in next to some coffee. Got to have my coffee IH Heart Coffee You stay right there.
Okay, so let's peel off some of this sealant business right here. There's a little bit more sealant around the backside. I'm going to have to go in there with a mirror and uh, see about scraping off the back side of this cylinder. So we're going to get after this.
Easy side first, right here. I'm going to reach in and grab that old sealant and kind of pull it away I Don't want it to fall down into the engine, just kind of peel that off there, scraping away from the hole. Easier said than done here. just kind of pull that back there we go.
Nice little piece fell down in there, but that'll get washed out. no worries. Okay, gasket material is gone from this section. now.
The hard part is I need to reach around the backside Over Yonder Where we cannot even barely see and scrape away and remove the rest of that material. There's a I got a big chunk of it right here. There's a piece. All right coming back in with the scraper unit.
Get a mirror in there too so we can. whoa so we can see what we're trying to see here coming in. Let's see here. Forgive my lack of commentary I'm trying to concentrate on not dropping sealant down into the engineer and I actually can't see.
Oh, there's I drop a piece or was that a reflection. Oh I Didn't think that was a reflection. Look at that thought. I Dropped a huge piece of sealant down inside the engine there.
Oops, it got me guys. it got me. So anyway, I'm actually like I was saying I'm using the camera to see what I'm doing cuz I can't see down past this corner so you guys are effectively making me able to do this job. Okay, that's looking good.
All that business is nice and shiny. Let's get out of this little dungeon of a hole down here and we'll get the uh, the Vbt gaskets changed out next. Woo there. we can put that back over the intake. There we go. Preservation. Okay, pocket screwdriver for the wind. We've got to extract this, uh, this old gasket right here.
Again, We've got to do that without gouging up gravity of the flashlight. Pop That Thing Up Like so see that comes right out of there. Get a hold of it and complete the extraction. There we go.
Okay, so this is our suspected faulty component here. So now we get into our bag. our bag. It's a Northern bag.
It's a bag. We get into our bag and and get these gaskets put into position here. There's one on this side and one down on that side. One for each cam shaft.
Grab that next one good and down you go. So what'll happen here is when the valve cover gets placed over top of the cylinder head, it will make contact at those oil ports here and here and these gaskets are going to seal that area between these cam caps. uh, and that valve cover allowing a clear path for oil to flow properly. Now about that flashlight that fell.
Come here Light! Yeah, got it there she is. Woohoo! So real quick thought and I'm just going to go ahead and diverge from my plan once again. I'm going to lose my socket down that hole. We're going to knock these uh spark plugs out real quick.
like just to get him out of the way. Hey real quick change of plan on my non- plan plan figure since space is at a super premium back here and the valve cover is off. I'm going to go ahead and yank these spark plugs out real fast just to get those out of the way. then we'll go.
uh, work on that valve cover. Now in the Part One video, we already saw the evaluation of said spark plugs. We took some measurements so we can kind of speed through this uh segment with a quickness here just to get her done. I Could just skip it, but then everyone's going to go.
You didn't change the spark ples and since I hate to disappoint. I'll just uh include this even if it means making another hour and a half long video cuz that happens. uh-oh look my red light was flashing I'm running out of battery. Tactical reload buttons.
Drop the mag new one, tap and rack ready to rock and roll. green light next one I Got that one already I think this is a yellow battery. Yeah, that one's not even charged either. Bad battery maintenance.
Anyway, here's our third one. Free plugs removed. Let's get the new ones dropped into their holes. Okay, new plugs coming in.
We're going to do this with some quickness. Get in there, lower it down, thread it up, spin it around, make it tight, tightish slowly. I Don't want to have the ratchet at speed when the plug bottoms out so we're just going to go slow and creep up on it cuz I don't want to have the ratchet impact on the plug so it's bottomed out I'm uh, running torque on it to crush the Crush Washer it's getting tight. One more click here. Okay, that one's in wrench and repeat. oh hey Dave you know that uh that Suburban outside with the blown up big block in it I'm going to buy it I think he wants 200 bucks for it. Oh wow yeah and that's Che Well, between the cost of repair or and or uh, the cost of Towing it, it's better for everyone. if I just scrap the thing because it's going to get scrapped cuz there's really not much left in the way of usable parts and he'll have to have the thing towed back up to I think Tampa or something like that.
So that's going to cost more than what it's worth. So I figured I figured at the end of the day, I'll just uh I will alleviate him from the the burden of the truck and then we can, uh, recycle it properly. Oh, this battery is also in the red now. Well, I've got the axles from the Ford for that jeep.
so I don't really think I need. well. I'm not going to going to put a big block in a Jeep and I'm not going to rebuild that big block either cuz I think it's a Jasper reman click And what we just experienced there was a uh that was called foreshadowing. Uh, the the soft intro to project Jeep 2.0 Okay, that stuff's all set up.
plugs are in Let's uh, go around this perimeter of the cylinder head here with uh with our towel and wipe away some of that sand and dirt. see I already got some inside of the cylinder head. No match though. We'll just kind of I'll dump some oil in there and rinse it down.
Then we'll drain it out and whatever I manag to not drain out the filter will catch there we go. Where's my blow gun? I need to I need to blow some some air through there. Also there she is. There's a couple spots right there.
see that right there there. Now it's dandified. Good to go. Okay, now we need to take this little o-ring that is stuck over here on the cam shaft Oiler and get that that inside of the cylinder head as well.
Something very easy to forget. that one goes right here on that cam cap on the end. So we've got all three gaskets under the valve cover in position. Let's head over to the cover.
We're going to pop out these plug tube seals and then, uh, this thing. Uh, once the new ones are installed, this is ready to go back on. So I know we just did this operation in Greater detail. uh, yesterday on the Part One video.
So we're just going to speed through this as quickly as possible. Uh, like I said, the other video was, uh, just over 1.5 hours long, which was 50% longer than my maximum allowable uh video time. So it stands to reason that there's potential for this one to be 1.5 hours long. and if it is, it is.
But if it's not, and I can knock that down some I will do such things. So what I'm really trying to say is I'm in a hurry. A little bit of a hurry here, nothing crazy, but I do have some urgency going on. so I'm pulling out all the stops. What? I'm not pulling out is this stupid thing here? It seems to uh seems to have quite a grit. Ooh my phone is ringing I wonder who's trying to sell me something? Let's answer it and see what they want. Okay, smaller screwdriver. That one's not.
Uh, it's just not doing what we need it to do here. It's not small enough to get in behind that piece of gasket. so I'll sacrifice another pocket driver for the team. A lot of times these break when you do things like this.
They're not good. Uh, not very good. Fry bars. Come on.
What was I saying I'm going to do this with a quickness all lies. Um, this is. this is as aine. why are you serious right now? Bigger screwdriver.
I Got it started with the smaller one. That's what it was. Yeah, you stupid thing, you lose I Win. All right.
Well we seem to have found the secret to getting this done. Just destroy. Destroy! Next there. problem solve.
Those are removed. Give it a wipe I Didn't damage the uh. ceiling surface. Okay, let's get our new units dropped in.
Okay, there is a two tube seal. There's a tube seal. We can almost press these in by hand. almost.
but we're going to use a socket and a mallet instead. Bang bang and a little more. right here. There we go.
Now they're all bottomed out. Good to go looking nice. Let me Bend these tabs back make them even how I found him there. No one's got time for that.
There we go. That one needs some tweaking. Good good to go. Let's wipe off my uh, my witness marks and my evidence here and any dirt deposits created.
Cool beans. Let's go and take this unit here. We'll hose it off with some high pressure air just to get rid of any uh, residual contaminants that might be in there. And then we'll get this thing back installed or reinstall install.
You know what? I'm talking about? Good now. let's get our perimeter gasket in position here. We're going to go with what we know, so we need to find a corner. That's a molded corner.
So that's either going to go here or here. It looks like we've got a molded section for this, uh, bolt boss or whatever right there. so this is where she goes. That is my hypothesis.
Oh look, an error. That old gasket is still sitting over here. That would be fun to forget. double gasket, the valve cover.
oo that would wipe out the cam shafts because it would cause cam shaft pressure. or Cam Shaft uh, the oiling system to lose pressure. It would all leak out right here and potentially could Wipe Out the cams which could Wipe Out the head. That would be bad.
So let's get that thing plucked off of there right now that was in there. Pretty good. Got it? Okay, we'll give that surface a quick wipe. What is that? Okay, cool beans.
let's get this thing back onto the engine. Rolling. rolling, rolling. Keep that roll cart rolling in right there. All right. Moving on in. We're busting out the tube of sealant one more time. We need two dabs on that cylinder head so we're going to give this a bit of a squeeze here.
Yep, it's still flowing so we're going to put one dab right right there like so and then the other I need to get in there with a mirror so I can see where she goes I'm trying here to yeah I think that's our spot that looks like it right there and let's get this thing maneuvered properly. which I don't really have the space to do that. so I'm just going to kind of squeeze this out and plop it down I can't get down far enough. Come on a little.
Ah, there we go I think I got it. release I don't have it I No sealant failure, no worries. I'll just kind of push it on up where I want it. Oh, come on, get what are we doing? Ray The sealant all came off the head and stuck to my glove.
It's not what I wanted to do. Ah, this is not how I wanted that to happen. it's it's gross and messy. I need a little bit more.
It's it's too thinned out. Stand by folks. Looks like we're not doing this fast after all, we're doing this the arduous and tedious method. I Guess there we go.
That's what I was trying to achieve. Got it? Okay, that's it's ugly, but it'll do it Cool all right. Now for the interesting part. getting all this maneuvered back into place uh, without smearing my sealant and without losing the gasket out of the top of the or the bottom of the valve cover.
Okay, so I really only get one decent shot to not Foo bar this. if uh, I mess this up then um, well. I won't know until I got to start the engine. So naturally the goal here is going to be to not mess this up.
Cover is coming in, gaskets in place, Everybody's in good shape. We just kind of maneuver this thing right on in here and I'm hanging on to it. I've got a couple obstructions on the left. you guys can't see.
There's like a plastic like a plastic little cover guide thing or whatever. Just got to push that back. Come on. come on.
Aha, there we go. That's what we're looking for. I'm looking down under this unit making sure the gasket hasn't fallen out and it's looking good. We are coming into alignment this Dow pin just lined up and I believe the spark plug tube seals are what's holding us up now.
So I need to go in there with a mirror and a pocket driver and then work those seals over the tubes. We're going to start with this side cuz the uh, the whole cover is kind of leaning over some. Oh yeah, can you guys see that right there? I Can't see if you can see? Yeah, you can see. see how the tube seal is a little bit oblong.
It's not wanting to slide over the tube, pushing it down with my finger, some it moved slightly. so now we're just going to go over it and push down on that seal until it fully clears. How do we do this this way? This way trying to do things like this through a mirror is weird. The directions are all bass. Awards There we go. little bit more. I Know this is boring. that one's on Next one.
same thing with the flanges. push it down. This one's also very hung up. There we go.
there's a thud so it did bottom out. that one's on. This one's almost all the way over a little bit. Uh, which side do we need here? Bottom side.
Little bit of encouragement with that pry driver there. Push that down. There we go. Okay, the cover is in position.
So now going to try to seat those dowel pins one here and there's that one in that back corner. There we go. That one's on. now.
we can get the bolts in and uh, apply some clamping force and some torque on this valve cover and we'll start it off with the ones we can see just going to get them all threaded and I'll go through and tighten everybody down. There's a bunch in the back that uh I know yall can't see, but I've got to go in. Regardless, that one's threaded. there's one there.
feel the next one right here. Drop that 10 down inside its home. There's another one farther back in the corner that one's down in its hole. now.
Threads are starting. This is why you all always, always, always, always always thread things up by hand first just to make sure we get them all. One more over here on the left. I Think there's one more that goes in the center of this cover? Yeah, right back there.
need to find one more. Unas got her right here. Got drops down on the back threaded. Now what's left are the three 12 mimet sized ones.
I Believe one of them went over here on the side. It's the Deep one that is not the Deep one. That's not it. Maybe in the back corner somewhere.
Yep, got that one in right around there in the back. long 12 and there should be one more 12 around here somewhere. Oh, maybe that's the long 12 in the corner. Let me try that one.
Yeah, that feels better or not. No, that didn't even go there. It's not a bolt hole. Okay, it does.
Go there all right. Okay, let's go ahead and start to clamp this down. We've got the center bolt right here where you guys can't see. I'll start with that one.
Let's get the ones in the back here. If I can reach them, that one's tight and I'm stuck there we go. This one. Clamping force is good.
Oh how about the ones in the back corner? The 12 are on that side so I'll get those last. Get this one right here. next way down there little bit of torque next far. one way back.
torque next one up. Okay, let's get the 12s next. see here. Had to switch out to the wobble.
Oh come on you, what are we doing I don't know I cannot see anything. Let's look around from over here on this side and see what we can see. Let's run this one down since it's right in front of us. that one's got some good click.
and then there's that silly one way out in the back that I can't seem to reach properly properly. I Know tool change? Use a different socket. We'll go with the the shallow 12 with the extension here that fits. Yeah, lock that extension in and we just finish her off with an actual ratchet. Since the big one's not going to fit, have to use the smaller one there. You can switch that. There we go. it was on loosening mode.
Click Cool. Okay, all the perimeter bolts on that valve cover are tightened down. Let's get back there with a mirror and just double check all the bolt holes. There's the 12 right there.
10. There's a 10. There's a 10, another one right there, one right in front of us. right down there.
there's a 10. 10, 10 10. Okay, this cover is now in position. Let's grab the coils, prep those up, and get those dropped down in the hole.
Oakley does three coils are coming in? I've already greased the inside of the boots with some dialectric lubricant. I Skipped that part to save us all some valuable time cuz we've seen it before and no reason to see it again today. Again, twice on the second vehicle. So anyway, there's our uh, our coils in position.
let's get the bolts in and run these guys down next. and one fastener dose Fastener dry. Fastener Wi dry un do one 2, 3. There we go.
we can count. Ah ah ah. two cookies. Six good.
Okay, let's throw the brackets on this top of uh, this cover next and we'll start to lay the wiring harness back in position here. So this bracket, which is the one that people don't put back cuz it's hard to do. I Can't tighten this bolt right here just yet because I'm going to have to line the bracket up with the other bolt hole which goes into the intake manifold. So I'm going to tighten it up.
uh, mostly. Right about there it's good. So now I'll be able to move this around in order to line up this other bolt and then I'll have to just come in later on and and put final torque on it. Okay, looking down, there's going to be another bracket that goes right here on the corner.
This is for the O2 sensor wire and I think a hose went through there as well. bracket cick. That's good and we'll take this. Uh, this.
O2 wonder if that went the other way I think it did. Yeah, something's abnormal about that on here. Does it go? Thought I was saving some time off. wrong didn't I something goes here.
A wiring harness goes there. Yeah, that's the way it went I don't know what else. thinking okay, did it wrong I didn't I thought I was wrong I was only wrong in my head. Wait I know this isn't right.
Hang on. This is in the wrong spot. This doesn't go here. This goes over here like that.
That's where this goes. That's what I did incorrectly I had it on the completely wrong wrong area. We're on the side of the cylinder head over here. This is the driver's side.
This guy goes on this side. That's where she went I Thought this little wire thing right here was around on the back. Something just didn't make any sense. Other way there we go. that's how she goes. and then I can put this wire through that little Loop and now it's secur here. That's That's what we need to do here. Okay, so next in this corner we've got this little uh, electronic noise suppressor unit that's going to screw into the valve cover right here and we'll just plug that in later.
There's a connector on the harness for this unit right here. right there. Good y you guys couldn't see. Yep, that guy goes right there.
All right. let's climb or get ourselves out of that hole back there real quick. Like let's move over here to the passenger side. and I want to get our uh, oil supply hose connected? So we'll insert the Uh the screen and then we'll get that banjo bolt back together.
So there's our screen that protects the solenoids from contaminants. It is clean. We have a new Crush Washer On the Banjo and another new Crush Washer for the other side. So what we must do here is get this thing.
Let's get this stuff out of the way here. I Need to get this screen reinserted into the head so we're just going to kind of stick that guy. it's not working I'll have to just push it through. there we go.
Screen's going in now. we'll come around with the banjo, finish pushing it all the way through. see that? but I need to slip another Crush Washer over that Bjo bolt. See that that guy over.
Okay, let's push the oil pipe in position. There we go and we'll thread it in. Oh no look I double I double Crush washed it I didn't see it. Oh no you don't I'm losing it guys.
ooh I caught it I caught it I caught the washer. Oh man, that was a very successful failure. Okay I didn't see it I didn't see that other washer. it was the same color I thought I had plucked it off earlier but I did not.
Can't double gasket things redo. There we go. So now Banjo comes around. we can drop the new washer back in.
You know we just did this. but hey I love my job there. So pushing the fitting up to the head I'm going to try real hard to do this by hand. thread you come on you piece the uh oil line.
wants to go back the other way. yeah that oil line was kind of bent I had to bend it out some to get clearance and now it's doesn't want to go back. let's get that guy threaded. Oh yeah, there we go.
we're started okay ratcheting crows foot wrench. um I Was reading comments yesterday on the part one on this truck and F folks were uh a couple people asked about these These are blue point got them from the Snap-on truck like 20 something years ago. Uh, if anybody wants to find them you're going to look for a part number and they come in a set but it's BF that's Bravo Frank Charlie Romeo Mike 17 and the 17 is the size Bravo Frank Charlie Romeo Mike those are the Snap-on part numbers. If you were to go to eBay Uh, you can probably find a set of these uh for sale. So if you would like a similar set for your own purposes, that's probably where the best place you can find them. or the Snap-on truck I think they're still in production I'm not a th% sure on that. I'm not a Snap-On guy snap-on dealer I Just work here. So anyway, this thing's threading in.
We've got the screen in, we've got new banjos on it or new crush washers on the banjo. Let's get the long 17 and put some torque here. Then that oil line is installed. long sink, uh, snapping on tool coming in.
Let's get a hold of that guy and just get some nice torque action applied here. Clicks. Very good, Very good, Good good. Okay, that guy's on.
So now what? I Do not want to neglect Are the ground wires that, uh, get bolted on right there? You see that one black little ground wire hanging out. We have got to bolt that on or we'll have major driveability problems and that's very easy to forget. There's another one. Where's this one Go I Think this one goes to the intake so one there and then the other one goes somewhere else.
Let's go find a 10. I Believe this one is the Droid that I'm looking for. so let slide that guy in the hole I Know it's dark down there fellas I hope it doesn't uh, doesn't kill your experience because of lack of illuminaries and I'm losing my Fastener you know I I Got to say I think the book time on this job is a little off. Um, been working diligently and there is no way I'm going to beat the book time on this job, which is unfortunate.
I should be able to beat that, but I can't and I also can't seem to get that stupid thing to line up the right way. This is why I I Think you can beat booktime on this job if you like. Don't put the brackets and stuff back in. but the ethics of uh, that operation are just unacceptable.
Ground wire? click. That one's good. Okay so I think we have everything on on the cylinder head that we can put on. We we need to uh uh, unlatch this harness and lower that thing down.
Then we'll get everything reconnected all right. So we've got ground wire on. the little panel is on. this is bolted down.
coils are in. Let's get our harness back down into its position here. get it slid back into place. however that went I think it goes like right right there just chilling on top.
There we go. that's that's kind of how it's going. So I need to get the plugs in. Man, we can't see anything in this can we? I don't even know this is a horrible video.
There's nothing to be seen cuz it's all blocked by stupid plastic. Anyway, we got. there's one solenoid plug going on under. where's that thing go? I I don't even know what I'm doing here there.
There's one plug, the other one that one's clicked on. cool the other one. I Hope you guys can see what I'm doing. Probably not. This is a horrible video I'm fired fired from YouTube I Don't work here anymore. It's all volunteer work. Oh yeah, I Still have to get some zip ties out and fix these broken connectors on uh, on the coils too. Hang on.
Hang on here. Let's get moving in as close as we can trying to trying to facilitate this as best as possible. Oh that one what we're going to do. Well, that one's broken off more than normal.
so this one is not going to be able to get the zip tie repair. see how? see how the entire connector broke off I can't zip tie repair those? I I'll show you the zip tie trick on the front ones cuz some of those connectors survive. So what we do is I'm going to get all this stuff plugged back in and we're going to throw some sealant on top some RTV and that RTV sealant is going to, uh, allow a decent Bond on these coil connectors. That way they can't wiggle themselves loose.
so unfortunately, we kind of have to just glue the thing on it can be undone. If it needs to be, this is just going to provide uh, some ADH iion to that connector right there. Just smear A little dab inside. That one's good.
Okay, one more in the back, actually, one in the middle dab of a sealant right there and that's just going to lock that connector on. It's not perfect, but we, uh, we play with the toys that we're given here. See how? we just kind of stuck a little bit of sealant right there on that broken connector area that'll lock into the tab that's on the uh, the coil itself so it doesn't render the coil damaged. Meaning we can disconnect this at a later date and you just have to re silicone it.
So next up, let's take this harness connector here and we're going to bolt that guy on. Let's get the bolt ready here. Put that one in. that's not the right Fastener you those threads are.
it's a self-tapping type of thing. Let's try this one instead. Get that guy on. Okay, and there's one more piece of harness connector right there.
That one goes over and we have a nut to secure that uh bracket. Let's get all these guys tight. There's one, there's one, and there's one good to go. Okay, moving on to this direction or to the right.
Rather, harnesses for the fuel injectors that's going to go down over that stud right there to secure it. and then we can get our injectors plugged in. I Think Yep, There that one, another third one, and another little connector for that stud right there. So that's all the injectors on this side.
Now back in the corner, there's another connector hanging out. That one goes on that little noise suppressor thing. See the little guy in the back. Click that one on and we've got I Think there's another bracket I Need to get connected somehow some way.
Where's this? Go see here. I Tell you this is like the hardest part is making sure all these little harness pieces are in position and connected properly. So this one that's not reaching that bracket so that bracket must not be in alignment. Let's try to move it. Or I have it backwards. Perhaps. Do I have it backwards? No, No, no, no, it's got to go up here like that. Yeah, that snaps in right there.
Get in there you there we go go. I'll hold the bracket upward and then tighten it down there. Now there's not a bunch of uh, tension on that wire and I can plug in the O2 sensor kick. There we go.
Okay, so back side of the harness is fully installed. Now we can move to the front cylinder head. Let's get the tools out of here. Get that out of the way.
I'll do the wiper cowl part last. I Think over here on the front. I've got more ground wires to pay attention to, so let's move this guy out of the way. Some: We'll get the fuel injectors connected.
since the wires are right in front of us. We'll get this ground wire screwed into the head, that one over the stud, that one on the injector. this one on that injector. Get in there and some torque on this pen.
right here. That's our ground wire. That's a harness bracket. Here's a connector see: Vbt connector right here.
Another ground wire. It's going to go there. I Think solenoid connector here. Oh, we're getting somewhere now, fellas.
It feels feels like the home strap. Another 10 coming in right here for this ground wire. Get in there. these thread.
Seriously, what is malfunction I Can't get the bolt in and it's right in front of me. I'm terrible. What is this? I'm not terrible. No.
I'm I'm not that self-deprecating guys. I'm just thinking out loud. sorry just thinking out loud. A little frustrated cuz this is being difficult.
Ground Wire Click Action Double Click Safety Okay. flashlights out. This stuff's installed. Solenoid Solenoid Cam Position Sensor O2 Sensor Coils up front.
Ground Wire Ground Wire Cam sensor Solenoid Cam Sensor Cam sensor On that one, we got more. uh, more harness to connect right here. Had to disconnect that for some clearance. There's the alternator power cable, one other connector for the harness.
Okay, we're getting somewhere. almost done. Let's get the 10 on the alternator now so we'll pull back this uh, protective little sheating boot thing right there and 10 mil nut coming in battery's Disconnected by the way. Click.
Just slide that little boot back down. Secure that so nothing grounds out on the cable. that's that's in good shape. Everybody's connected here.
Moving on, let's get the front coil set up next. So here's this is the zip tie trick. What we do is we take a zip tie, run it through that connector, see that, and then we take the connector and snap that into place. Okay, well, it doesn't snap cuz it's broken.
Then we take the zip tie, slide that over the tab that is on top of the coil. see that little T tab right there and the hole in the zip tie will fall into that Tab and it will lock that connector in position. So then all we need to do is come in with some Cutters chop off the excess and that is how these connectors are repaired when the thing doesn't fully explode in grenade and destroy itself. So we'll do the same thing on the front one. So that's two methods to remedy that. A little bit of a problem there. You can do the uh zip tie method or put some glue on it and have a nice day. I Prefer the zip tie method cuz it's easier to undo.
But like we saw earlier and like we see with uh, this one right here, sometimes you just got to use some oh no no no that one's got the got the thing on it. never mind like we saw on the ones in the back. You've got to use silicone sealant. sometimes not all the time, but sometimes that one on this one's going to need it too.
that one's also broken I didn't know that one broke. You see it's missing the piece Toyota is doing Toyota things okay. that one in cut off the extra there we go and smaller zip tie I'm going to try it on that connector there as well. See that coming in again one more more time.
60% of the time. it works every time. Okay, that's over locked in. cut it off connector repair complete.
Good to go. Okay backing up. Need to get the intake manifold in next. Woohoo! So let's lose our towel.
Blow out these holes just in case any dirt went in there. Nope. Nope. Nope.
Negative Okay, good to go. Let's bring in the PCV hose. that's the one that hangs out over here that runs up towards the Uh air intake area and I think yeah she sits right there Perfect All righty intakes on its way in. It does have new gaskets on it.
they're not blue but they are good. Yeah, these ones came uh, black in color. so slide this thing down over those studs that's in position. She's home.
Very good. Our intake: we've got two 10 mm nuts for the studs on the ends and then the four Allen bolts those drop down in the center, Come in there with that long shank uh bit and run these guys down. Next 10's already here, so let's run them down with the 10 First, bottom out a little bit. It's got to compress the gasket here.
We go, switch out the 10. it's a 10 cck. twice clicks. Good to go.
Okay now I do have the brackets on the back side of this. I'm not going to show that it was a bear getting it apart and we don't really need to see that again. so I'll skip over that part for later on. Uh, what we need to do next I think is, get the brake booster hose set back up so we'll push the hose back in its bracket and twist it around, stick it over onto the booster, and then we need to run the clamp down.
Get some uh needle noses, push that clamp back where she goes. Beautiful! Let's see there's another PCV hose right in front of us. We can plug that guy in and same situation with its little clamp. put that right where it goes. Get our tent out of there so wiring harnesses are all connected, injectors, ground wires. we're in the home stretch. Um, Fuel line. Got to get that fuel line.
Now what we saw earlier is this fuel line was leaking where it connects to the line. Uh, that comes from the tank down there I have uh I've cleaned it out and blown it out. The O-ring inside looks okay so I can't really see why it was leaking. I'm going to put this back on for right now.
uh, reason being: I cannot locate a suitable replacement so I might have to build a new hose for this. and if I've got to build a new hose uh well, it's just going to have to wait till later cuz I don't have a hose kit to to build this with I'll have to order that stuff. So I think I can get away with uh, putting this back on for now and if not, then I'll take it apart again later and do something about this hose situation. So anyway, we're going to take this guy.
snap it on right here. get that unit connected. Click. There's a bracket down there for the fuel line to hold on to and then right here we slide that guy on and snap that together as well.
There we go. and then right here. snap it on to the fuel line as well. There we go.
Okay, fuel line's on. Um, we've got one safety clip device that goes over this fuel line to prevent it from accidentally coming off that guy's in position. Let's get the throttle body set up in a moment here. Need to clean the back side of it out a little bit.
It's kind of nasty. all right looking left a little bit. There's another uh vacuum line right here that plugs into the uh, the throttle body area. Another vacuum line coming through looks like that connects to this little bracket down here and then our purge solenoid that bolts on right there at the top of the valve cover.
That's our Purge unit right there. So we're looking for another 10. Drop that one down 10. Click here we go.
Okay. I Think it's airbox time coming up. Next look at JS Well, airbox coming in next. Unplug it.
You go fast. Dave and I were talking about motor mounts with vacuum lines running to them. Toyota Does that? They run a vacuum line to a motor? Mountain We don't know. Why does anybody from Toyota Land know why? I don't know.
Anyway, we got three 10 mil Fasteners coming in right here to bolt this airbox down. This is the part that um I'm not remarkably familiar with because Dave took this apart the other day when he started working on this and then I kind of stole the job from him cuz despite how hard this is I kind of like this particular job I Don't know why I'm a glutton for punishment. maybe no, it can't be that bad cuz if it were I would work on Northstar Cadillac Motors and Mercedes oh by the way, speaking of working on stuff, um if anybody wants me to like quote them something when you go to my my website and uh and send an email uh please don't email how much for engine mount and then put your car there like we're going to need some complete sentences if you guys just give me like a one sentence and you didn't type anything and you're just like how much for break job on Honda Civic um don't send me those kinds of emails. those are ridiculous I I can't quote you guys stuff like that over the phone I don't know how much you need and it just it violates Pro call on a massive level and I just I can't respond to incomplete sentences. So if you guys need something, uh, please feel free to use your words properly and articulate your request uh with some detail because without details I I really don't have much to uh to offer thank you and I'm not kidding I really do get those emails all the time. It's quite annoying how much for turbo on uh Transit van I don't know, don't know could tell you I'd like to tell you but need details. So anyway, Airbox Lids Coming in, slide that over the throttle body here and there are uh numerous little vacuum connectors I need to figure out mass airf flow. That's one.
This one looks like it connects here. Then over here. I have this vacuum line I'm assuming that's going to go. This one goes up here.
See that one there? That one goes in there. let put our clamp on it. This one plugs in here. that's the only place where it reaches and then that means this one with the tape has to go here.
Like so emission stuff. So our flippy floppy one that I didn't know where it went that goes up and over connects here and it turns out that's not actually broken I thought it was, but it's not. That guy is our vacuum source for the uh, purge solenoid that one's connected. We have a couple more 10 mil Fasteners to work, one clamp clamp click and then we've got the 10.
It holds the airbox lid down I think there's two of those. The other one's way back here. Somewhere There it is clicks. Okay.
engine's back together with the exception of the wiper cowl. So let's get that wiper system set back up and then we'll drain the oil, refill the oil, and then restart the engine. Okay, let's go ahead and remove. Remove all the organic plant life from here, blow it out with some air.
Goodbye. There we go. Goodbye organic plant life. No more of that business.
So let's get the base of the wiper cowl in position here. Going to maneuver this unit right on in minding the paint on the fenders cuz I don't want to scratch it? That would be horrible. Try to leave things in better condition than when I found them. not wor so scratching paint definitely goes against that narrative.
So now that's good to go. Let's go ahead and get all the uh, the strut bolt Fasteners back in to secure the suspension and then oh sh, look what? I did I got the headlight wire pinched. forgot to route that properly here there. Now we're better. Headlight wire goes in there or headlight windshield. it's a windshield wire. It goes to the windshield, see like bolts right to it. Wonder if that's for like, defrost or something? Anyway, back on track, let's let get the 14s in and tighten all that good stuff down.
Loud noise is incoming I took three Fasteners off this side cuz I didn't realize I only had to take off two, but that is of no matter. cck tce clicks. Actually now not going to work. We need to get all the other small bolts lined up.
it's uh, there's too much play here and farther on. Down the Line they're they're falling out of alignment so I need to get the rest of those started and then we can tighten it all down at once. Those are my rules. got to follow them.
So we got the 10 going down that stud right there. Then we're looking like two more tens on the edge here that go onto the fender, that one, and that one in my hand. Here we've got two additional tens. they're going to go all the way down over here on the other side.
H that one's not alining, threaded and threaded. We have more Tens coming in and some 14s for the strut. One goes back there. Same with this one here.
this one over here and the last one right back where we started from over here. Okay now. loud noises. Seriously good.
Let's switch this out to the the 10 mil and get the rest of those. uh, smaller. Fasteners on where is that 10? Not here. We'll use the Uh Ratet multiple click.
Ah I found more organic compound. Get that out of here. Cool. We have a straggler that's the one for the stud all the way over here.
That one on as well. See, the goal is to make it. so if someone ever goes in here one day, they don't find things that are missing kicks. So that's uh, that thing set up.
Now we can run the harness over, get its connectors reconnected. See here, that one goes through this hole right here. That's the next one right right there. Then we can plug in the last one.
and of course the windshield gets plugged in to the wiper transmission connector right there. Now we will take the wiper transmission, set that up into place, stick you in right backwards. My wiper transmission is on backwards. Slide that down wiring connector and then we've got one, two, three, four, Fasteners So we're looking for these three and where that other one go? I Just saw it.
man. my bench is a mess. Oh no. Well, we'll start her off with the three.
That way I can empty my hands out that one and then the third one. It's going to go down down in there under that wire harness connector there. Okay, 10 Milli Coming in again. Okay, cool.
Now we'll put the top path of the cover on. We've got all the Fasteners in. Struts are tight, bolts, bolts, connected, connected, connected. Good to go.
Okay, plastic piece coming in next. This should be fun because I've got to make sure that the end pieces snap in and align correctly with the windshield. Stick that guy up there. it's got to go. Like under that rubber piece has to go under a bunch of business. There we go. Start like that. This one maneuver, that one in the other side is what's uh, throwing me off here.
Go fix it. There we go. Getting somewhere. now that goes down there nice and flat.
and even that's flat flat flat. it's clipping into the windshield. it slides into it. There's like a Groove in the little piece there.
Slide that up flush here. Good here. Let's get this piece of trim snapped into its home, which is going to be in the cowl area here. There we go.
That's in now. I Just need to get some plastic. Clips in those to hold it, line these plastic Clips up that are all broken. There we go.
Yeah, look at how much space that took up like all of it was a boatload. Okay, that's in. Let's get the wiper arms on next. So we've got two bolts or nuts.
these guys and the arms. Let's do do this one. first. that's the passenger side.
Now we have witness marks on the glass. see where the uh, you can see where the wiper stops. So we're just going to line that wiper up where it stopped the first time which is right there. and they spline into the output shafts on the drive shaft.
There's little splines on the wiper arm and there's also little splines on the shaft FP that around this one goes right here. These wiper arms are not the same. There we go. I Think we're a little off on that one.
Move it up. One spline there right there. Okay, little bit of torque with the impact trigger control. No worries.
good to go, that is all set up. Let's uh. let's run this truck up in the air, dump the oil, refill it, and I think we will be complete after a restart. Highlander Moving back up, let's grab the oil drain, spill it, and fill it and throw a filter in it and we can fire it up.
Oh I Got to put the Uh battery cable back on I forgot. It's always the details that get you in an eort eort to massively reduce overall video time. We're going to do this oil change in Snippets Real quick. Snippets 14 mil for a drain plug.
Here's our first snippet: Unclick it. We spill it and fill it and drain it out. Fill it back up. All that good stuff here.
Well, that wasn't quick at all, was it? Threads are kind of crany. let it ride and we need a specialized little socket thing to get that oil filter housing, cartridge adapter business out of there. I uh I have not used mine in quite some time. I'm wondering where I put it aha I See you ding now.
Watch slips right over. Okay, all righty. here's the tool. There's the socket.
There's the extension, and the ratchet. Unclick it. Oh, that's tight. Who did that? Holy Smokes All right.
need a longer ratchet That was tight. Look: I have leverage longer ratchet. Yeah, these aren't supposed to be that tight. The tightness of those caps do not. uh, dictate how much sealing power you get. Uh, that is achieved with an O-ring Holy crap. Seriously, that's insane. Look at this.
Watch this right here. Oh no way. Okay, that's uh. it's not okay.
Oh, I'm about to get in trouble for this one. You guys not supposed to do that. Really, not supposed to be doing that. But since that's the metal cap and not the plastic one, figured it'd be okay there.
So now that little business is coming loose, let's get her unscrewed here. I'm going to get some lubricant on me. I think I Yeah, Yeah, yeah. Look right here.
This o-ring is what causes the seal, not the tightness of the cap. Here, we can, uh, pluck that old filter out. We go fetch a new one. We'll let this thing drain for a while.
Okay, we got a new filter package. Go ahead and pop the O-rings and whatnot out of this unit. Set the filter aside on something clean cuz it is a cartridge filter. There's the O-ring we're looking for That's the big one.
No. I'm not changing the little one. Don't need to change the little one because I didn't take off that little ring right there. so it's fine.
Pull this guy off, put this one on on. Got some dirt on my threads. Not cool Now due to the amount of oil here, that's uh, free lubricated me. Wipe that thread off, take the filter, stick it in, stick it back up there and we'll tighten it back down to uh specifications.
Trigger control: I'm just kidding I'm just kidding I will make that tored by hand I Couldn't help it guys I Had to do it there. We go a little bit more on torque. it moved. it's tight.
We're good. unclick, cool out of there. I Think we're done dry and draining and whatnot. So let's throw our uh, gasket or gasket drain plug back in.
I Don't know what I'm talking about. Drain plugs back together. make sure the Uh plug here is nice and tight like H did it again. got you again.
click good. We now have but one final task to achieve and that is to make it nice and shiny here at all the drippings and whatnot. Bous Okie Dos Let's back on up. Get this drain pan out of here.
We'll let her down and then refills the engine oil. Let's get everything out of the way. Hi Dave we can see you hi Okay so I've committed a plot twist atrocity. or a plotline atrocity rather I Did not film installing of the 020 uh engine oil I did put oil in it.
It's got five quarts. I Have not restarted it. so we're doing the restart right now. As soon as I can tighten down that battery terminal, look at that.
This would be a bad idea. Bridge the battery Gap with a uh, an extension and just melt the thing together. That would be horrible. Don't do that.
Okay, so now we may restocking the engine. Are we push button on this? or is this a turnkey engine. What do we got? Oh, we're push button Okay. Tell you what. I'm going to push the button in here. You guys wait out there and watch the engine start. Here goes nothing. Beginning engine restocking sequence now.
All right. she's alive. So far, so good. Not misfiring I Hear nothing? Uh, abnormal going on here.
Taking a look down below. No leaks. Go back, check the cabin and let's see what we've got. Warning indicators: just the door open and tire pressure.
So what we need to do? Fire up our scan tool. Beep! Use our flashlight to find our connector in there. Where are you? Dat link connector? It's in here somewhere. Uh, there it is.
Way in the back. The flashlight saves the day. Okay, Dlc's reconnected. We're going to pull up trouble codes while that thing's booting up.
We'll let this down the rest of the way. Clear the rack out of it, smoking oil spillage? Yeah, we'll clear the rack off and then, uh, we'll go out for a test drive real quick. like something's being delivered. Okay, so we're back in now.
We've noticed that the check engine light is off off. Uh. one issue with that is that I've had this battery disconnected overnight HKS for safety. So I'm assuming it cleared the Uh system out because those codes should still be there I think it was the P0012 and the P0025.
They are gone. So we're just going to go ahead and pull up history and just recheck real fast to make sure that they're there. and then uh, we can go ahead and close this video out. Uh, according to my GoPro I only have 1 minute and 18 seconds left of recording time.

Ray, just a little tip I learned some years ago; cleanup after any job is my least favorite task, so I believe in the old adage of "handle it once". Instead of putting the old parts on a work table that I would have to clean up later, I put old parts directly in the trash can.
It's like 1700 just for the injectors that piece of s*** truck and put all that money in it+ the labor

Talk about doing this the hardest way possible. The 2gr-fe can be a bit of a bear. When you build and rebuild them like I do, you get super familiar with them. Next time use assembly grease on the spark plug tube gaskets. Makes them slide on like butter. Hope that helps

I’m really hoping to get back In harness , albeit on a smaller and slower level than before, sometime in the next month. I have one customer who has been waiting an entire year and refuses to let anyone else touch his car, so that’s going to be first up. I don’t even remember what it came in for, but a nice, well cared for, E34 520i will be seeing the light of day for the first time in over a year, all going well.
I’ll probably end up missing an episode, here and there, once I’m working again, but I’m going to try to stay up to date. Especially want to see what happens with the Jeep and I’d love to see the tow truck finished. You call that something else, I know, but my American words have become misfiled and I can’t remember, now. I’m sure you know what a tow truck is…

I've emailed you twice. I never asked how much for anything, I just explained what the trouble was with my car. As well as year make and model. Also, included name number and email. I haven't heard anything back from you. I live only 20 minutes from sarasota.
This was 6 months ago. The shops in my area of South sarasota county say they can't figure out the problem.

We have a 2015 Toyota Highlander with the 3.5L engine. I have changed the spark plugs, but that was it. This would be challenging, but after watching both of these videos for this job, i would be confident in doing this job. You are right about that oil filter housing. Someone put way too much torque on that. Probably a quick lube shop.

Next you should recommend a wiring harness for those plugs and I hope that little piece of sealant that fell into the backside of the engine wont be a problem.
Hopefully you recovered your 10mm off the rear of the airbox

You lost your 10mm socket on the air cleaner box hold down bolt. I'm skeptical that those o rings and seals were the cause of the problem. Yes the old ones are compressed as they should be. No they were not brittle or leaking.
The book I feel is unrealistic for most jobs on modern vehicles, it would require that all parts, fasteners and tools, etc… be available instantly and done perfectly, the first time. 😉

Vacuum controlled hydro mounts are for vibration control with the car in gear and no load/acceleration. Basically it's just a comfort thing. I personally don't see it having anything to do with performance.

I usually do the oil changes on my daughter's FIAT 500 but let a local import garage do a service. They employ a gorilla to tighten both the (plastic) oil filter case (which seals by tightening by hand) and the oil drain plug. The filter was a bear to undo and of course, the drain plug rounded off after having survived 11 years of my care without incident (I use a six point socket). I'm not sure how stupid you need to be to do something like this, but I'm never going to let them touch the car again.

There's a common thread that's not given kudos in these video's comments and that's the ability to get totally involved with a lengthy project that REALLY LENGTHY, as in lets take apart half the damn car. And it's my problem (my complaint) when working on my car and it's having to disassemble so damn much. Not just taking off a radiator cap but removing the entire front grill and supports… Eric does it; Ivan does it; Ray does it; Wes does it. And nobody seems pissed about it like I get. And keeping track of all the parts is daunting (to me!!👎😫)

Careful review of the "footage" will show, I believe, that the 3-washer VVT supply line banjo bolt stack-up, aluminum (?) then copper on the outside and copper between the supply pipe and the valve cover, was how the vehicle came in and how the front one was reinstalled.

Iam sure that all mechanics would agree (even computer keyboard cowboys) that large transverse engines in bays that were meant for inline 4/5 cylinder engines are the worst design feature ever thought of especially after watching these 2 videos.
