This truck was towed into SMA over the weekend. The owner had a flat tire and had someone assist him in changing the flat. Evidently the "torque to spec" part of the process was skipped... Remember to double check your lug nuts after replacing a flat.

Hitching a ride home about 20 yrs ago, I got in an old mini and we had traveled less than 5km's when the right rear of the car gracefully sagged down while the wheel overtook us at high speed and rolled off into the sunset, never to be seen again.

I had to lift the car by hand while the university teacher put the spare on with one nut from each of the remaining wheels. (yes the guy really was a uni teacher).

    True story.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! American Rambler says:

    Pretty crusty wheel.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Oakhill says:

Sorry I am so late to comment. There are dozens of compilation videos on YouTube of wheels flying down the road after coming off cars & trucks. Not a good thing.

This happened to my mom after having the dealer rotate the tires during a service. She drove the 60 miles home and thought something didn't feel right. Local tire shop put the spare on for her – the studs were okay, but the aluminum wheel was trashed. The dealer admitted that they had made a mistake without making a fuss, and replaced the rim and tire. Mistakes happen, but when the shop takes responsibility it's a lot easier to forgive. She kept going there until she moved to a different state.

There's a tire store down the street from where I work. One day they got in a rush on the last job of the day and either forgot to torque the lug nuts to spec or didn't put the lug nuts back on. well, the front wheel came flying off in front of our shop at about 50mph. it scared the absolute shit out of me, the wheel destroyed the chain link fence infront of the shop

Hey Eric, since u put a new rotor on the drivers side, shouldnt u put a new rotor on the passenger side to balance out the brake feel and pull?]…just so it doesnt pull to the drivers side when the brakes are applied?

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Clint Divine says:

I had my tires rotated at a shop, they didn't tighten my lugs enough and my rear tire came off!! It happened just as I was getting on the highway ramp. Checked the other 3 tires, ALL the lug nuts were loose.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars lineartechbd1600 says:

My lug nuts were loose once and it snapped the studs and my wheel came off the car at 70mph. Wheel rolled into the bushes and my rotor and ball joint got ground down 3 inches.

and it´s so hard to notice because you just get an unbalance that rips the steering wheel out of you hands and a clunking sound louder than your radio…  people like this should be taken their driver license away

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Zappa says:

must have been going on for a while the rattling and wheel shake. what was he thinking? roadkill stuck to the ball joint?

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jimmy Mac says:

It amazes me that whoever owns that car did not realize that the wheel was loose and let it get that bad.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars VenomX says:

lol yup. A tire shop installed a tire on my truck. I left the shop, got on the interstate. 70mph and bam, there went my wheel, passing me up. Luckily, I was able to control the truck even though it was the driver side front wheel. Crushed my fender, not to mention the 2 mile walk I had to take in order to get my wheel and roll it back to my truck.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars rogercook1177able says:

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars michael blacktree says:

I can see the people on the side of the road changing the tire…
"Hey you gotta lug wrench for this? Mine doesn't fit."
"Nah, we'll just use my multi-tool. It's got pliers."

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dan Myers says:

i'm guessing it WAS tightened, but the major rust scale then crumbled and broke away and then the wheel became loose. Been there,done/seen it. I occasionally do AAA calls and if a spare wheel/tire is rusty, we wont mount it. If it comes off its our baby to fix the damage. just say no to rusty wheels!!

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ICU2 says:

Do an Eric the Car Guy thing………..just weld it on.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Junior says:

Put A Plug In It That'll Fix Her

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dalton says:

I had 4 new tires mounted at my local tire shop. I got about 100 feet and heard a noise, and at that time the front pass.side tire/ wheel came off my vehicle. The Tire shop neglected to tighten the lug nuts. The damage to my fender was over a $1,00.00 bucks.
The worker who installed the tires swore up and down he checked all 4 wheels several times. The point is, always watch these guys because sometimes they get distracted and forget. This time I forgot to check his work, also this tire shop has different employees that come and go.
