GM 3.6l V6 alloytec motors were notorious for having undersized holes in the right side PCV valve that would gunk up. Once clogged, this would create issues with the timing chain tensioners, and of course the timing chains. They changed the hole sizes in late 2014. Prior to that, people in the know would drill the 2 bottom holes out to 5/32" and the top hole to 7/32"
I'm more curious about what caused that valve to contaminate that much? I'm sure it will happen again if not fixed
I really appreciate the thorough cleaning you gave that PCV, but I doubt the customer would mind if you replaced that $5 item with a new one.
Ok 🤷 apparently I have a higher level of OCD than you have displayed in so many vids 😅…I was and am, highly annoyed that you didn't aligned that valve cover tubing with it's seating 😑
I want to have a cleaning done on my 16,000 mile 2018 Focus. All short trips, 9 miles or less. I'm sure it needs to be done. I wonder how much it costs?
I don’t even know why you touched this car
How disappointing 😞 I was looking forward to smoke.
Some people are just cheap.
Absolutely wish there were more mechanics like you Ray. Thanks for sharing.
A major reason for the carbon build up is likely the same reason that little engine has reached 190k – it’s almost never been over 3500 rpm
You forgot to put some cleaner in the tank.
I don't blame the customer – I had a cleaning done a few years ago on an 05 Corolla after a diag – $500 job, did not come close to fixing the issue. Done right a cleaning may work but I am jaded now – next time I will just dump a can of Sea Foam in!
Distracted driving is one of the reasons that causes collisions while driving. Hope the best for you. Happy New Year 😀
What brand of additives do you use
My experience with cleaned PCV valves is they need replacing within a couple of thousand miles anyway. The carbon buildup accelerates corrosion on the spring and the spring now exposed again soon breaks.
I thought I read somewhere that modern gas has so many new cleaning agents in it that carbon build up was never a problem. That seems to be obviously wrong.
use your brain instead of y0ur tool
Finding the trims would be much easier if you scanned it with standard OBD2 instead of going by the VIN and model. Standard OBD2 will give you STFT, LTFT, MAF and O2 data which would be sufficient to diagnose the issue properly.
Nice find, I have found on these GDI engines the carbon buildup on the valves and injectors to cause lean conditions requiring intake removal for walnut blasting or valve soaking as well causing injector failure, so keep an eye out in the future. Also utilizing global obd readings to find actual fuel trim data is handy when certain manufacturers don't list or renames things to their liking.
Hahaha!!! Money shot!! Keep up the great videos "Click"
I'm thinking that the vehicle has not lived a proper life of service. The guy reminds me of my brother-in-law. Fill the tank, drive the car. Buy a new one when it's not worth repairing.
Thanks for another great video. 😀🇨🇦👍
LOL money shot!
Great video! Just wanted to let you know if you can’t see fuel trims! Just go into generic obd 2 and you should see in that data
GDI engines have a carbon build-up problem because there is no fuel to wash the intake valves. The cure is the ground walnut shells blasting procedure.
Was that 190 K miles wow
Keep buying cheap gasoline you get what you pay for………………….
Cheap gas. ⛽
I would love to know which product(s) you use (and procedure(s) had the customer chosen to do the carbon clean out.
1st thing I thought when the code came in was PCV valve, idk why, but yeah, as gunked up as that valve was, it's prolly all gunked up inside too GG Ray on keeping it real.
You know how you always say "Click" ? When you actually buckle up, you should say, "Safety Click!" 😀
Why can't people ever turn off their radios?
That is one tiny little pcv valve. No wonder it got clogged up! 😂
for me safety 2nd & i got sick off going through the green lights so now i go through the red ones.
Cheapo won’t be back until problem gets bad again
Lambda < 1 indicates rich, Lambda > 1 indicates lean.
Steam cleaning it,will get rid of carbon deposits ez
People are shorting themselves when they don't get the service done that should be. Sure it's working okay, but make it run the way it should. Your investment will last so much longer
What fuel intake formula do you recommend? Do you use SeaFoam any. Thanks.
Ray have you ever heard of using ATF as a fuel system cleaner? I put about a 1/3 cup in my gas tank and filled w 91 octane worked like a charm 02 Tahoe w 5.3ltr
I wouldn't want anything to do with the GDI motor that's a complex engineering which in my case is kind of pointless overtime that's going to be a hefty bill on the pocket
I run seafoam in my old f150 about every 3 months great stuff trucks got 330,000 on a 4.6 and still running strong
I have a 07 hyundai sonata 2.4 with a horrible ping and ive replaced bunch parts chasing it, i cant find someone good enough to diag it.Any suggestions
After watching your videos for a while I have found myself saying "click" whenever I tighten something.
Damn Florida people really like to run cars until they die
So when are you going to start working for yourself? You need to open your own shop.
