This is why I remove my own caps before I take it in for service. Nylon rope with a knot on the end put the knot in the slot of the cap and yak it off will a towel on the ground to catch the cap. Using a hammer and dropping the cap on the floor I would not be a happy customer. Scratched up the cap but did not scratch the wheel. LOL

If you DO need to pry against the aluminum, and don't have a puller, get yourself some flexible plastic cutting sheets from the supermarket, for cutting vegetables and such. They're like 10 cents, and they work great.

Thank you for being careful with your customer's vehicles! Years ago I dropped my 88 Cougar off for tires or something that required removing the hubcaps which were secured with a special bolt in the center. Instead of calling me or LOOKING IN THE GLOVEBOX for the special tool, the idiots drilled out the bolts and didn't tell me. I didn't find out until I drove it and got out to find out what all that racket was. They didn't even have the courtesy to secure the covers with standard bolts!

It's been awhile since I've worked on any vehicles and the technology may have changed but can't you replace just the solenoid? I remember from working on my old Chevy Camaro that they in times past it could be changed seperatly from the started motor itself.

Home built slide hammer – Vice grip + sliding weight + extra long socket allen hex head bolt which matches the vice grip's thread. Drill through the (1 3/4 diameter x 3 inch long) weight and counterbore one end within 1/2 inch of exiting, both are free sliding fits. Dimensions stated are for concept only, revise for your available materials or purpose. Assembly: Remove the threaded adjusting screw, replacing it with the longer bolt which length's must be selected to remain within the counterbore. Suggestions: Select a pliers with flat jaws parallel with the Allen bolt centerline, amply round the weights sharp corners and the weight can be a nice hand full.
Our process techs used these adjustable throat slide hammers to remove shreds of plastic from partial shots at start up on expensive/delicate injection molds. We are a 1st and 3rd tier plastic parts supplier for the automotive world.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Robinson says:

Getting the caps off is the easy part. I've had a couple of those truck come in the shop with the inner duals completely seized on the hubs. An 8 pound sledge and some technician rage level 6 usually takes em off.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! xforce687 says:

    1. I use an old hood prop from a Ford Focus with a rubber end to avoid scratches.
    2. I had a 2500 with those exact caps call back the next day saying I didn't install them right and when they went out to their truck the next morning they were all gone.
I call BS, I used a Snap-On dead blow hammer to make sure they were on!
You'll mess your hand up trying to install those by hand!

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Leo F says:

A freaking hub cap? Come on. I thought you were pulling a seized wheel. Up here in NH ( the salt belt) the cap's fall off by them selves. It is the wheel that I end up with a 5 ton hyd ram to push off the studs. Class 8 truck's I have had to use the 10 ton ram to get the corrosion to break free. Must be nice living down where they don't spread salt all over the road every winter. Just had the first snow up here and following the pre treat brine applicator I swear I could see the paint line's lifting off the asphalt.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars I am the Offender of All says:

GM does not do this. Their caps are screwed on by the lug nuts.
