You should have determined if that 5 oz is coming from the tire or the rim if it was coming from the tire it should have been sent back and it almost bit you it was coming from the tire and you just piled to wait right on top of it typical

One thing I do my own mechanic work but I definitely would not take my car for any kind of mechanic work somewhere they change tires he said the car needed rotors that's not true to make it perfect maybe will it work absolutely them rotors are good for another set of pads or two these tire change places make their money on changing rotors a quadrupled price and that's where they make their money unnecessary parts replacement
What astounds me, is the shop have an indemnity waiver form ready, for situations like this. Your manager needs to reassess their business ethos.
Liability or no-liability your manager should have outright refused the repairs on the grounds that it's against manufacturers guidelines.
I fail to see why any of this is your fault. The job was for 2 new tires, those were fitted. You noticed other faults, which they declined to repair. If these morons are that stupid, maybe they need a much cheaper car. Given how everyone in the US is really keen to sue anyone, make sure they sign the waiver for the work, and make sure it makes them responsible. Yes, maybe plenty of ripoff mechanics in the industry, but also plenty of bad owners too. This is an example of the latter.
Well truth be known take it back tires off put them on the front and put the front tires on the back and get another year out of them they will ride just fine in the back there's nothing wrong with them rotors you guys always want through new rotors on everything then rotors are finso they're not brand new and perfect but they will work they will stop you absolutely will stop you I would take a DA to him and throw brake pads right back on them nothing wrong with them rotors at all
If someone has an expensive car like that, they need to be prepared for the bills. Tell them to go buy a cheaper car.
Tired of the tyres
I've seen too many pictures of hacks who keep chasing weights while balancing, props to you Ray for using Math. Edit: I should have finished watching the video. Sounds like the sales writer should have consulted you before telling them it was repairable. You'll see that land rover back to replace that time im sure.
I think all things considered, it might not be the correct and warrantied repair, but the quality work you put into that patch is gonna last them a lot longer than without it. Hopefully long enough to afford a brand new set of tires for be rear!
I would've used old front tire on rear. That one still needs replaced no matter what, but at least it wouldn't have a dubious patch that could cause chaos.
Instead of the patch, put one of the removed front tires on it. Safer perhaps than the patch?
This the problem today. People buying cars that they can't afford to maintain. They should have bought the Honda, and have the money to fix all that stuff.
@Rainman Ray's Repairs I'm not going to knock u for doing what u were told to do I understand the struggles of automotive industry I live it everyday customer want what they want qnd nothing else matters atleast the ship waived liability and if they go out go around the corner have a blow out then atleast u not held responsible for there ignorance on wanting a sidewall in a tire patch plugged I hope that doesn't happen but at end of the day keep up the good work

Ray – My new car suffered an “unrepairable” puncture in a similar location, with only a couple of hundred miles on the tire. The tire shop I went to was originally not eager to repair it, but I asked them to please repair it anyway, I’d keep an eye on it, and if it leaked I’d replace the tire as suggested. That “unrepairable” tire turned out to last as long as the other undamaged tires, for the full life span of the tires on the car. I really appreciated that the tire tech was willing to do his best with the repair, and it worked out fine. Thanks to you for paying it forward and doing a typically great “Ray” repair, despite the situation. Your work will be appreciated!
Hey there ray man been in that situation myself. Was forced to patch a tyre in the same place by my boss snobby owner of the vehicle. And got the owners to sign a document stating that if the
Tyre fails i will not be liable or be able to Sue me or the place
Where i worked. Unfortunately for them the Tyre failed a week later and they tried to sue me. But they settled out of court and had to pay for my legal fees and for defermation of carater.
IMO, with all things be equal. If u can't afford to maintain an expensive vehicle, You should not buy one.

Had a woman yell at me because my "poor shop does not do tires". I don't do them because there are 6 tire shops in a 15 mile radius. I work on older vehicles because other shops won't, due to the fact they would rather swap parts or do what the scanner says. When she threatened to leave a bad review I was honestly surprised that my shop had that possibility! I listened to her rant and politely wished her a great weekend. She told me to go and master masterbate (I'm sure you can guess what verb was used.)

I see no problem fixing a tire when you are qualified ,& experienced enough to judge there is no structural damage , & are filling in the hole with the tire patch leader . , then covering it with additional bonding agent ..Also for those that don't know Michelin has a much better tire carcass than most ., accurate ,& strong . As far as reaming the hole further this will only damage the cords , & is only done to ensure the hole doesn't have more debris hiding in it …How do I know ? I've had the unfortunate experience of installing over 5,000 tires , & was fixing them before I started that career…
Oh, and the best way I found to burst Land Rover/Range Rover superiority pretentious complex is to remind them they are driving a car that was made by a subsidiary of Tata Motors.
The only thing you could have done differently is shown your manager that tire. If you manager would have seen that he would have had the forms ready for the customer. Other than that you did good Raymond
Wow! That thing is going to act crazy with the odd tires on the front. I tried that twice & both time all 4 tires had to be the same. My car was Squirrely until I corrected it. ?- why buy something if you cannot maintain it. Makes absolutely no sense. Hell, they won't even clean the break dust off the wheels. Must be a lazy bunch. Crazy thinking customers can try your day.
You should have written on the inside of the tire; "in case of crash resulting in fatality, I told them not to do this."
I honestly see no issue with the repair you had to do Ray. Between the glue, then the patch and the layer of sealant over it all that repair will probably outlast the tire. I have had repairs done just like that in the past with no issues. I have a patch on my 2005 Colorado left front tire in almost the same spot, I have over 10k miles on the patch so far without an issue. Now if it was a on vehicle that sees a lot of highway use then I might rethink it but I see no issue doing that type of repair for a vehicle driven for mostly city street driving. My truck never sees highway use so I am not worried if the patch causes an issue.
Case of a person owning a Land Rover that cannot really afford it but has to have it anyway. LOL ! If you cannot afford an extra couple tires, in the day of credit cards and pay it off in increments… maybe you're in the wrong vehicle ? That one needed an alignment too .
Just put one of the old fronts on there and call it a day.
The real shame is everything is so damn expensive now. Those tires have to be top of the line tires and 4 of them have to be a small fortune. The customer and you were put between a rock and a hard place because of Putin and Russia, it's all their fault. (sarcasm).

My wife and I work for a company owned by Monro in SWFL (they bought out Rick Johnson if that helps give you a hint), and we've had bosses approve flat repairs like this and told us to "just do it" to make the customer happy and get them out, and I always make it a point to them that I'm not responsible for anything that happens once it leaves the shop because I didn't approve the repair, the boss did. We've had a few not actually hold and boy were those people upset and they've tried to say "well the tech didn't do it right". No, I did it right, it just shouldn't have been approved in the first place.

New tires should've gone on the rear…potential steering issues with them on the front. Old tire repair looks "as good as it can be" but that tire should definitely have been put on the front for at least some margin of steering safety when it goes flat.
What is more important? Not wanting to spend money on a tire or personal safety of yourself and others.
In "my world", it would have been an easy choice. Replace the tire. Some customers, you just don't need.

LandRover/RangeRover owners are the new douchebags of the road , topping BMW douchebags. These owners are all pretentious , but can't even afford basic maintenance like 4 new tires on an AWD car….or even basic brake AND rotors AND brake wear sensors… These idiots can't afford to get someone to do basic maintenance, and are too mechanically incompetent to fix their own cars. For a common European car, there's absolutely no reason to ever change pads and not replace rotors at the same time. Standard solid rotors aren't that expensive, and if you buy OEM quality pads and rotors from places like FCP Euro that offer a lifetime exchange program. Once your pads and discs are worn out, buy new ones, send back the old ones, and they refund the cost of the new ones. I've done this so many times on so many cars.

Similar situation happen to me when I worked at discount tire. We just put the old tires back on and let them drive away. It's better than being reliable for someone getting hurt or even killed.

All the comments on if it'll work or not isn't the issue. The issue is that even the best tire tech can be thwarted by a negligent customer who feels righteous in their crusade of what they've heard will work. While you take no responsibility on the patch holding even though you did a solid job both times, your shop should've denied service regardless. All it takes is that tire to blow, cust loses control and runs over a child for them to blame it on you. Some of the sht my shop turns away is petty af but its because they've been sued before or had to come out of pocket to make the tantrum laden customer "happy". Sometimes you have to be the bad guy when it comes to safety and costly litigation.

Always inspect all four tires on the ground prior to installing any new ones! That way you keep your ass intact.
I changed tires professionally for some time for a company I won't mention. I had a customer wanted a tire rotation including balance and pressure check which are included with lifetime rotation. Completed job then after customer comes back in and said we didn't rotate his tires and he is certain because he put a little scratch on his hub caps. Before telling me he marked his caps I explained in detail what steps I took and everything in detail that I did. He calls me a liar and says he can prove it and points to a scratch he put on his front hub caps before brining to the shop. I said sir those are your hub caps we charge extra to rotate those. 😆
I wouldn't have been happy doing the repair either but if they sign the waiver then the liability is on them. You warned them. That's the best you can do.
Should have just slapped some flex seal on there and called it a day.

Monkeys on costumers back and I would not him or her leave till they signed off on the side wall repair was not recommended by the shop. I have seen the tires come apart on the road when a side wall repair blew out the side of the tire just because a plug being put in by the do it yourself repair which his wife was driving causing her to lose control of her suv and rolling it over. She survived but the hole in her side wall was the size of my fist.

If u can't afford to maintain it maybe buy something a little more affordable letting things slide cause u don't have the cash is not a good idea just makes more hazards down the road and more costly repairs
Admit I’ve done it to my own tires.Never had a problem. Btw when my beloved asks me why is my lunchbox is on the table – gravity. Why are your boots are in the kitchen – gravity. And many many more.
I used to get criticized at this one national tire chain that I worked for…. they said I wasted time by using the bead breaker on BOTH SIDES of the wheel. They told me that breaking the outside bead was usually enough to dislodge both beads. I disagreed. Only worked for them for 4 days. Dismissed on the 5th.
However, I've never given them one more cent of my business and told everybody that can fog a mirror to stay away from them.
This same tire chain also told me spinning the tire up a second time to ensure I got double zeros when balancing was also "wasting time" and that the balance did not need to be exact. "Nobody can feel a quarter or even half an ounce."
Yeah??? I can. Anybody who rides in my vehicles usually comments how uncommonly smooth my stuff rides. Huh.
I always thought it funny that this well known, international corporation found me to be a time-waster…. but the other places I've worked, I was commended for double-checking my work and ensuring the customer was getting a treated right.
I enjoyed my time at the Canadian Tire chain of stores. The mechanic I was paired with was fantastic. 15 years later and we're still friends and bump into each other at car shows. Though, much like with your tire patch situation here…. we were forced to do a lot of things that were borderline unsafe just to make the customer happy or save a few bucks. Not a situation I like being put into.
I worked for sears auto center back in the day. Had a customer come in with wheels and tires that did not fit his car. Wanted me to drill new holes in the wheels to make them fit!!tried to explain why that was unsafe and customer got pissed!!!
Hopefully, whoever they hit when the tire blows out is able to sign a waver to. Bolt the spare on, and, tell them to sue. Or next time, inspect all tires before doing tire work. Your boss is an idiot. 21 years in the business, and. the people hurt in the vehicle they hit won't give a damn about the waivers; just that someone knowing violated safety norms. Don't believe me? Ask YOUR insurance company.
I am one of those weirdos who has my own tire equipment, and could have done this job in my backyard. I use patch plugs exclusively for all my repairs. Since I discovered them I have used nothing else except once or twice I used rope on the side of the road……then took it back to the shop and installed a patch plug. I have repaired several tires in that area. None ever failed. There's a reason those patches are super flexible; tires move, and they have to go along with it, which they do extremely well. The stem helps hold it in place as well, and solvent welding in the rubber is pretty good these days. Granted….they were my own tires or those of people I know well, not randoms with a nasty personality disorder. Would I have done it in your situation? Yep, sure would have. If the boss is happy with the waiver, we both know that it will probably never fail, and the RMA just doesn't like the idea of being sued, so they make very cautious recommendations.

We worry about a little tire patch that my fail causing a slight leak in a hole but not Semis with retreads that you see fly off trucks and cars running into them and crashing. Oh the humanity. LOL
🤦I'll say I am a notorious penny pincher. I do as much work myself that I can. The best bang for my buck, when it comes to tires, has been my Cooper AT3s. For the price they gave for those Scorpions, they could have replaced all 4 and probably had enough to at least turn those rotors. I may cut corners here and there but NOT when it comes to safety. Tires and brakes fall into that category.

Lawyers will practice a shotgun approach of pulling in everybody they can into a lawsuit, unfortunately you have to hire a lawyer to defend yourself regardless of merit of the case. There's many comments here about that patch will work fine, never had a problem fixing holes that close to the sidewall, etc. I'm not an engineer specializing in tire manufacturing, nor a mathematical statistician of success or failures of such repairs; however, there's a reason punctures like that are not to be repaired and it's called the safety of the customer/driver of that vehicle. The shop should have absolutely refused that repair and if the customer leaves angry so be it. Document the work ticket and customers invoice accordingly.
Yes Ray the people got mad at me because I would not repair a tire with a screw in the midst of the sidewall they got mad at me and went to the boss I told the boss I'm not being responsible for repairing if it blows out he said just fix it I'm only looking out for the people and others I know what you are saying I had a family to feed and I told my boss don't ever ask me to do this kind of thing again if someone gets killed it's your responsibility don't know whatever happened I don't work there no more they closed up so that's life

I had a nail in the same spot on the outside of the tire. My mechanic plugged it just to get me home but it lasted about 6 months until it started to leak so that actual patch might last longer than you think. I admittedly pushed it because my tires were just worn enough to have to buy 4 new ones.
I’ve had to do the same with a waiver before. Good thing is that when patched correctly it’ll most likely hold up it’s just more of a risk. I really like the patch plugs that have the sealing surface on the plug part and has the little metal pin sticking out of the end to pull it through. They tend to work better you just have to ream the hole slightly first. What really sucks is that it’ll likely hold up and next time they’ll have an argument to want to get it done again.

I hope that Landrover is not 4 wheel drive. If by chance it Is a 4×4 you should have refused to replace only 2 tires. Every owners manual that I have opened, when referring to 4×4 tires states clearly DO NOT REPLACE ONLY 2 TIRES. Bottom line is the tires wear changes the circumference or revolutions per mile. Damaged gears, bearings, differentials and transmissions.
I have done a LOT of sketchy (i won't even call them repairs). One night I get a call from my brother to bring him some gas. I was fully prepared to roast his ass for at least a few days. When I got there he said something wasn't right, he had filled it up the day before (I think the car was a 77 Dodge Coronet). The fuel cap was behind the license plate on the back. He wanted me to follow him. Turns out every time he accelerated, fuel would gush out. We came to the conclusion that the baffling in the tank must have rotted. We were teenagers so we had no money. What we came up with was to ball up some tube socks and stick them in the filler neck and use the fuel cap to keep it from falling into the tank. It didn't STOP the leak but it slowed the leak from a gush to a drip.I think he drove it for 5 or 6 months like that, then somebody did something stupid and hit him in the back quarter panel. Insurance company gave him $250 more than what he paid for the car so he was happy.
If I were a professional mechanic, I'd last less than one day. I'd be unable to contain myself, berating customers who are unable or unwilling to do the maintenance necessary to keep their vehicle safe on the roads, and not so unsafe as to be a threat to themselves and others. I have no patience for stupid people, absolutely SURE they're right about everything and are, in fact, right about nothing. I've watched so many of your videos, and the videos from other mechanic's shops… every time I think I've seen it all, and my opinion of the average motorist can't possibly get any lower, I am proven wrong.

Garages need to take responsibility and Refuse to "only replace pads" in situations like that or need some law that does not allow mechanic to only change pads if rotors actually worn too far!
My mates new car was driven by old lady who had it for like 20 years Alwasy fixed by garage obviously.
Her pads were like 75% left but the rotors were literally about 1/4 of inch thick or about 8mm
1 side was worn through all the internal cooling fins and it was only single sheet of metal about 6mm thick, The disk snapped off the Hub when we removed it
I just wanna know why they went with pirellis and neglected the rear rather than just buying 4 cheaper tires
PERFECT case of trying to look rich, but aint, bought a POS range rover used for cheap, and cant afford any repairs cause the parts are so expensive just for having a landrover badge on them, $10 part, nah, landrover badge, $70, let this be a lesson to the people of the internet, dont buy fancy cars if you cant afford fancy prices, you only make yourself look dumb in the long run
