You heard it correct folks. I get a comeback. A TOWED IN COMEBACK! The worst of all comebacks ๐ฅ. This is every mechanics nightmare. We always try to do our best but it is inevitable that you WILL get a comeback if you do this long enough. The good news is, it wasn't totally my fault...kind of.

EO good that you found one that works and are not charging the customer for the hassle. Honest guy that you are. But it looks a lot like another Ford design Mickey mouse setup which is also a factor. Stuff under boost P should not be flimsy plastic crap.
It's not easy doing the right thing, but it is honorable.
I think there's got a be two different intake manifolds made for that year make and model of car. Not 100% positive but that's just what I think it is. I guess the dealer and the parts supply houses don't have that information distinguishing one from the other. But the best part about it is that you were able to resolve the issue without taking up too much of your time and the customer was back on the road a day later. Thanks so much for sharing the video not very many other mechanics would take the time to make a video about one of their comebacks. Keep up the great work and please stay safe and healthy.๐๐
Like tho stuck gas pedals ..this needs to be recalled. ..? ๐จ
Maybe Dorman got that one from Ford? Ha!
Say after 40 years ..it happens specially when you work on everything out there.
What would Ivan do?? Compare the old part coming out with the new part going in.
Wheres the orignal one
We're all human. We make mistakes. It happens to the best of us and that's all I can really say. It was an honest mistake. Don't beat yourself up about it.
Dealer only Erik o sorry lol ๐
Why don't you come back !
Jb weld it.. fixed..
Everyone overlooks something every once awhile, sure it is not a known problem a common answer.
I feel your pain sir, and think about this that is if all parts come from 1 major distributor then why on God's green earth do they all vary in some sorta fashion? Cause they don't, hey like you said before just cuz it's new doesn't mean it's good. It's all about money๐คฏ
Maybe when one of these pops off and runs away causing a fatality crash they will start to care.
I gotta tell you Eric that the respect you garnered for doing the right thing is what makes you respected. Yes, it may have cost you some time/money/headache in the long run we as viewers werre shown the way by doing for it for nothing. Your ego aside you did it because your an honest man and well respected. Wish there were more like you in the biz. I think highly of your work ethic. Your dad must have taught you well and you followed it. Thank you for being you!!
wow a dorman part that actually fit and worked – i guess its true that an infinite number of monkeys on an infinite number of typewriters will eventually crank out war and peace.
the irony of dorman making a part that fits for once
Oh man, this video resonates hardcore.
The OEM discontinued the part I needed so I had to go aftermarket. I then went on Amazon and found the part from a manufacturer everybody claims to make great quality parts and placed my order.
So the part comes in, I give it a look over, and everything looks fine. I put it on and after 3 painful hours on install, I found that there was an imperfection that could lead to major engine damage. Too pissed to deal with anymore, I just put my tools up, go inside, and request a replacement.
Few days later I get the replacement in and this part has the saaaame freakin defect. I try to request another replacement, but Amazon only gives me the option for a refund. I then start to ask myself if the problem is that Amazon got a bad lot of these things or if it's a larger scale problem.
So, Amazon points me to the manufacturer website with this contact form that requests all this personal information and it's then I start to kinda panic. I'm thinkin, "Christ, I'm just a normal joe blow, not even a shop. It's gonna take me forever to fill all this crap out, they might not even call me back, and even if they do, I ain't got the time to waste getting all this sorted out." Worse yet, they imply they don't even really talk to the end users.
I then think ok, maybe I can ask some other sellers if they see the same problem. Everybody tells me basically there's no way they can lay eyes on it since they have so much inventory. So that opens my eyes to the fact that these stores are too big; so big that a manageable problem can get totally missed because they can't get someone to examine their stock.
After that, I make the call to buy the part from NAPA since it's a different store and it's possible I can test my theory of a bad lot of stock at Amazon. The part comes in and to my delight the defect isn't there. I then look closer and I start to notice the box is in terrible shape and it looks like it's been opened already. I then pull the part out of the box and I start to notice it's missing a lot of the labeling that I know it should have on it from the manufacturer. I see lots of other differences in the part and then it hits me: I think somebody switched the part out with another aftermarket brand.
At this point I'm at my wits end. Every other option is worse than this one and if this is as good as it gets, I'm in serious trouble. So I sit for a day or two in disbelief tryin to think what I'm gonna do. Eventually, I end up just fixing the imperfection and going on with my life, but it was stressful as hell.
I really think Eric should at least add in the description that this video is about how terrible it is when you can't get an OEM part and chances are basically nill the aftermarket parts aren't hosed. Way more of an enlightening conversation IMO.
This is why I like this channel so much though. He really brings a look into the problems even the little guy encounters with car repair.
I just about fell off of my couch when you said โDorman for the win.โ LOL
You treated your customer right, were honest and straightforward and you repaired the problem. What more could a customer want?
As always, great job.
What Eric doesnโt know, the Echlin product support guy is also taking calls for Holiday Inn, Pizza Hut and Capital One.
Eric O isn't even a mechanic. He's a hero in a baseball cap. lol
Echlin used to be a good company, "back in the day," when they were a stand-alone company located in Branford, Connecticut. Then they got bought out, and quality took second seat behind profit. Sadly, that is the "new normal."
That is the troubles with any aftermarket part if there not 100% spec you find those times it cost you sometimes more then your profit !
Hi Eric many thanks again for your videos ๐น the problems with oem there isn't such things as all motor companies has other manufacturers who make the parts and supplies the motor companies it's getting harder nowadays to buy decent parts for your vehicle. Take care Tony.
Here lately dorman has actually been worth a darn haha
Now that you made the video (THANK YOU) if these poor product companies are wide open to lawsuits since you did call and let them know the product is dangerous.
Iโm sure you will be thanked for this one for sure. We need more like you up here in Canada too.
๐จ๐ฆ๐ค๐ผ
Part was defective, not the installation or installer! CHARGE EM! ๐ Not your fault at all bro!
Wow! Amazing; I feel like we all took a step forward in โthe gameโ !
It happens to the best of us Eric. More than once. Especially if you're crowing about some job you did. But you can't blame it on the part. Wrong part is the wrong part. That seems to be more of a problem these days I'll tell you. I'm more likely to get a wrong part than I am the right one seems like last couple years.
Stuff like this used to keep me up at night…'did i remember to plug that back in? Did I put that spring back in?…I dont remember torqing the rear main cap!!!…oh shit
The worst one was an F350 van i put brakes on and the drivers rear assembly completly came apart. From what I could tell it looks like I didn't get the parking brake spring back on all the way. I was a young mechanic and I was just starting out working in the shop it happened to be my boss's friends van LOL.
You would take that thing would have gone into limp mode though.
Hey Eric, Different product but it shows the same problem. The garbage company that picks up our waste has had the 50-gallon refuge cans on back order since June 2022. The company states next-week next-week etc.. but nothing shows up. It is now September 2, 2022 and still nothing.
"An 1/8th of an inch is all it takes baby." ๐คฃ
Nobody is prefect……..you know this tho im sure.
If everything else fails there is zip ties
Brilliant, great customer service – not your fault but great diagnosis
You did good, probably saved lives from a run away FORD. Would you mind much if I released my inner werewolf on these manufacturers for not following up on the matter?…uh I will need your permission to forward this video to them whilst I savor / relish their hide.
…some dingdong from Avoca NY with 700k+ viewers seeing that their parts don't fit and cause some little old lady's car to rev to the moon in traffic as a result.
I hope someone here has a contact with the company and shares this, an actual good use of social media.
I bet after this video they'll find a solution…especially when enough of us get to emailing them.
You're lucky that your customer is so understanding.
Just hope that they put the proper amount of blame in the proper place.
So, don't feel bad about it.
"No known failures of part"… yeah, right…only because that person deals with thousands of other parts and dealers and no one has reported it to him.
No. NO. NO!!!! That bad part could KILL SOMEBODY!!!! N.H.T.S.C. and C.P.S.C. should FORCE A NATIONWIDE RECALL on ECHLIN!!
Hey, you didnโt make the part.
What's with the lawn mowers always on, and did they build a highway in your shop?
Good ol Chinesium alloy in the mold making. Go for Dorman or a brand name to avoid situations like this.
Unreal. I'd like to say I can't believe it, but that is not the case. I'm very glad you posted this video as there is an lesson in this for all of us.
Seems like a "Class Action Suit" beginner's kit to me for Eckland; remember the 2014 GM Ignition Switch issue that resulted in the $121 million economic settlement due the faulty switch that caused "sudden acceleration. This is, in my eyes, a "Configuration Management Failure"; no way to know if the OEM Ford coupling isn't available for comparison (or the original Drawing/Rev letter). It is very disheartening to see that the "Doorman" Chinesium part fit but not the "Made in USA" from Eckland. I feel so sorry for you Eric (and all other Mechanics) for having to deal with the "Parts Shortage" issue … this entire situation means you guys eat any profit as the Labor component of the original repair gets taken away doing it twice.
Soooooo in this case the Dorman product is the "recommended fix". What a strange new world we are living in.
I guess even Dorman deserves a win now and then.
Nice that you took care of your customer!
Can't thicken that up with teflon tape, huh? Just for the interim?
Skynet was not supposed to start with Ford.
I agree that times are different these days.
Many moons ago I told the FelPro rep that their intake gaskets were junk, they were de laminating and we had intake leaks, they would suck the blue part off and run it thru the engine, I told him the McCord gaskets didn't give us any issues!, he stated that if you don't tell us there is a problem we don't know about it?
A few years back now I told the Timken rep that they NEEDED to include the studs that hold the front wheel bearings to the knuckle on the Ford Super Duty's, they shred EVERY time they are removed and we're waiting for Ford to deliver a new set!, raise the cost of the bearing to compensate, the customer is paying either way, about six months later they started showing up with studs in the box, I couldn't have been the only guy complaining?, but an improvement to the product occurred.
Woe the day, that man nameth "Dorman," the part that worketh….
LOL – Glad you got the customer back up and running. We also now know which aftermarket company spent the most 2 years ago on recruiting mechanical engineers worth their salt.
Great video as always. Hope the family is good. -Ryan and family
Stop using Napa. They are the worst Chinese junk Crap Poor Quality control Sorry, no quality control. echlin parts are owned by Napa It's their brand.
What kind of light r u using in this video
It's never easy. Nice fix though… you made it right. Enjoy your channel, I wish your shop was in florida.
I'm not a "mechanic" but 9 times out of 10 doorman usually fits for me on my car projects.
Always keep the old part. Heat gun should be able to remove the fitting and swap it.
TL/DR: Dorman sucks ass, I got royally screwed (as did my customer) by poor quality (even by Dorman standards) Dorman manufactured intake manifold. Cost cutting taken to the extreme caused excessively long strings of expletive's my mother would not be proud I said.
I recently got backed into a corner with aftermarket junk as well. I replaced an engine in an ambulance, was a 2013 Ford E350 with the 5.4L that had blown a spark plug out of the cylinder head and took a small piece of metal from the head with it. On a vehicle with 215k miles on the clock plus another 4500 hours of idle time logged (which is the equivalent of about 350k miles combined), my customer made the right decision and opted to replace the engine rather than just the cylinder head. When I pulled the intake off the engine (which must be done for clearance to remove the engine from an econoline chassis) I discovered that when it blew the spark plug out it (obviously) pushed the ignition coil out as well, which unfortunately put a hairline crack the plastic where the coil bolts onto the intake and that crack extended into the intake runner on that cylinder. So now it needs a new intake manifold. Same exact backorder story from Ford that you got. Not available, none anytime soon. So I had to go aftermarket. And good ol Dorman is who makes the aftermarket ones. Every parts store was the same part, different branding for a few of them, different packaging. All the same dorman manufactured part.
Now, as we all know Dorman products are the gold standard in quality (I can't even keep a straight face when typing that lol). Dorman is garbage most of the time… but the intake they manufactured for the 5.4L Fords, WOW this thing was cheap and flimsy even by Dorman standards. One could even say they cut corners… lots of them. It even weighed about 1/3 of what the factory intake weighed. The plastic was extremely flimsy, the aluminum coolant crossover passage was made from very porous aluminum. I mean this thing was beyond garbage. I fought tooth and nail trying to find something used, flea bay, local salvage yards… anything but this garbage from Dorman. I contacted my customer and advised him of my concerns with installing the Dorman intake. He took my concerns to heart and tried finding a different option himself… but no, the Dorman one had to go on this brand new engine. The ambulance was needed back in service and my customer reluctantly told me to go ahead and install the Dorman garbage.
First start up of the engine. Runs great for about 5 minutes, then I start hearing a small vacuum leak that got louder and louder (as the engine simultaneously was noticeably running leaner and leaner) then WOOSH! Massive vacuum leak stalls the engine. The vacuum nipple for the purge valve (which I was very careful not to knock or damage while installing the intake because of how frail looking it was) was able to handle 5-ish minutes of engine vibrations and then it was done with life. Book time is 4 hours to replace this particular intake but it takes about 1hr 45m if you know what you're doing. Pulled the intake off, warrantied it, very reluctantly installed 2nd garbage intake, start engine, 10 minutes go by…. then again the same failure. I had even verified that I had not damaged or broke the vacuum nipple after I installed this intake and before I started the engine, so I knew it was fully intact at engine start up.
At this point I was livid, had to pull off this pathetic excuse for an intake yet again and I again made an rather extensive effort to find something else. Like 3 hours I looked and looked and phone calls, looking for anything. A used factory intake, one from a different manufacturing company, ANYTHING but the Dorman one. But Dorman was all that was available. Fortunately the 3rd one was able to hang in there long enough for the customer to pick up the ambulance. But I had to tell him I wouldn't be trusting that ambulance for emergency calls (lights/siren) and that intake (that cost almost $300) would surprise me if it lasted till the end of the year and because it is a commercial vehicle, once it goes into service any hopes of warrantying it again with the manufacturer were non existent. I had to tell him to be EXTREMELY careful when checking the transmission fluid in it because the transmission dipstick is bolted to a plastic tower on the intake manifold. On the factory intake that tower is stout and gives the dipstick tube a solid mounting point. But on the Dorman intake if you pulled the trans dipstick out, you can physically watch the tower the tube bolts to twist and flex. When (not if) that tower breaks off the intake its going to put a giant gaping hole right in the middle of the intake runner.
To add insult to injury, Oreilly's tells me Dorman is denying my warranty labor claims totaling 8 hours because in their words I was "obviously careless while installing both intakes and caused the failures". Ummm no, the intake you manufactured is literally the worst example of cost cutting I've ever seen in an aftermarket car part. Build quality was compromised so completely because of the level of cost cutting that the final product literally has no hope of survival. Over 15 years wrenching I've never seen anything even half as bad as the intake they manufacturer. A blind man could see that this intake should never be installed on any engine with any hope of reliability or longevity. But it's my fault that the vacuum nipple can't handle even 5 minutes of engine vibrations without literally falling off.
That turned into a giant rant, i know. But this just happened 2 weeks ago so it's still fresh in my mind. I mean c'mon Dorman, really? I was actually somewhat impressed that they were able to source such low quality materials for this intake. I didn't know the materials they used were even available in such a low quality. I have never liked Dorman parts for obvious reasons and have always avoided them when possible. But now I have made a vow because of this that I will see to it that I will never buy, sell or install any Dorman product on any car ever again. I will scrap an otherwise perfectly good running low mileage car before I put a Dorman part on it. I don't care if they are the only ones that make a product, I won't do it.
Awesome job ERIC. You are a stand up man for sure. Keep up the great work and videos.
Great way to stand behind your customer. well done !
You should be ashamed of yourself. I'm the biggest keyboard warrior on here, I have did this repair job over 1 million times before and I would have got it right the first time.
The consumer is quality control.
And shenanigans like this are yet another reason why I am so glad Honda had the class action lawsuit against them when I was shopping for cars (I was seriously considering the 2018 Civic Hatchback at the time). Their engine was turbocharged, the Mazda I ended up buying is "naturally aspirated"
Good job buddy
Wire it on, simple.
Eric, lock it on using a plastic tie!! Too bad they bought a ford๐คฃ
I feel your pain, except mine was a brake master cylinder. 100 miles in and no brakes. Put a new one on and once again 100 miles in, no brakes. Makes you question life choices.
Call Napa back a month later and they still have no reports, right? Political, corporate and academic elites vs the rest of us. Thanks Eric.
I can't even get USPS to stop lying about deliveries.
I've complained multiple times – officially – and talked to plenty of people.
But apparently the scooter battery is here until it's really here which might be tomorrow.
I guess when you can't get fired. The old normal in this town. That part will never change.
Due to bureaucratic and/or political agendas your parts will now be backordered until the price reaches the desired cost we want you to pay……….there I said it ๐คฃ
Eric, Iโm not sure if you will have the luck I do, however, I call my local ford dealer, they tell me back order bla bla bla, I call the ford dealer in the next town over and get it next day.. I dunno if this is a case of the person at parts counter not knowing how to do their job or whatโฆ
Eric,
Great video.fix – thank you! It is NOT your fault that all these companies lie to you and sell you crap parts.
"You are the only person to ever have this problem." "We have never heard of this before."
THIS is what Ford dealers were told to tell customers that came in with problems with their DPS6 dual-clutch six-speed automatics YEARS after Ford KNEW they were defective. I was a Ford guy for 40 years – no more. Dont buy a Ford. Ford and their dealers are the biggest bunch of LIARS on earth. Ford family is wealthy enough that they could have fixed every one of them but chose not to. I hope they go out of business. Rant over.
[Angry at Ford] Paul (in MA)
A friend of mine had the throttle hang on his wife's Nissan maxima due to a poorly installed aftermarket intake. She was riding the clutch trying to make it home and grenaded the motor…. it split the block and the transmission bellhousing. I was impressed.
The potential for a litigation event due to simple stuff like plastic clips failing is scary. Be careful out there!
"This is the first I'm hearing of this!"
Is it me or are a lot of the new aftermarket parts bad right out of the box, doesnโt seem to matter where you get them either, there all junk.
Good job Eric
As much as dorman gets hate this is just another example of them doing something right. I hated dorman until I interacted with them. Hopefully this will get the attention it deserves.
Did you have any videos for touareg v8 p0304
Eric, Making It Right, not pointing fingers, just taking care of the customer. Another example of why your business is growing and growing. I'm willing to bet that you probably do little to no real advertising, I'm sure your customers spread the word often that you're an honest and trustworthy shop.
Eric, thanks for sharing this incident with us. Keep the great videos coming.
What is up with the lawn mowers? South Main Auto must have the most well maintained lawn/putting green in the county!
More and more companies are adopting the Amazon model of just shotgunning whatever crap they can onto market in the hopes you never return it.
They don't care if they have to refund thousands in product on the next month's balance sheet. The only thing that matters is that this month is better than last month.
Dorman saves the day! Who would have guessed.
Oh hell, we all make a mistake now and then. It's how you handle and fix the error is what really matters.
The Deep Throat Dorman with the Double Dinger holds on longer.
I don't know why you blame yourself for not pulling on the part once you snap it in there. It was made wrong. I thought you might try some hack to make it stay on there. Glad you found one that works. These are things the rest of us never see or hear about, things that makes a mechanic go screaming into the night, right? ๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ฎ
Very good insight on discovering product defaults and finding the solution, and we do love how you express yourself when frustrated, in a clean way, but we feel how you feel about things…awesome!
Nobody is providing a feedback loop to the manufacturer to tell them that the part is manufactured with an incorrect connector. Eric tried to provide the feedback loop but as illustrated it is too difficult and unprofitable for the end user to accomplish this task. The root cause will likely be a result of 'cost savings' but measuring the failure cost never gets placed back in the cost savings metric so the end user takes the shaft and nothing changes a illustrated by Eric having to cover everything himself. The execs continue to get a big bonus so no problems as far as the company is concerned. Rinse and repeat.
Don't forget folks the race to the bottom dollar ends at the bottom!!!
Nice …keep this digital
Bottom line who accepts a type of responsibility as codependents in lawsuit? or never heard of it??
Iโve had good luck with Dorman parts.
had "unable to bleed up tank pressure" or w.e the purge valve code is on these ecoboosts. order the purge valve from ford, they send a line. i go to install it, its like 1/5th of the entire thing. won't work, call the dealer back " parts unavailable no eta. now how do i explain to the customer this without looking like a jack ass. thanks parts person.
It's a manufacturing problem from all the junk made in China. Buy old USA parts from Rock.
Zip tie ?
At least your man enough to admit to a mistake, that means alot in my book. Good job sir.
I will never stop watching this Youtube channel. No bullshit, no nonsense, no stupid intros, no "Today's sponsor," blah blah blah. Just straight up automotive, and that's why I come here.
Keep fighting the good fight, Eric O!
