In a previous video https://youtu.be/1fMd0zUejL0 I showed a Chevy truck with an EVAP leak and we could hear it leaking form the top of the tank. I told you it was because the plastic fuel sending unit cracks under the stress of the rusted lock ring. Now it is time to show you what I mean.

That folks. Time for a follow-up This is the fuel tank out of that 2017 2017. Chevrolet Uh, we did the EVAP leak on it you guys saw in a previous video and it was gurgling up here and I told you guys I Suspect that the plastic fuel sender here is broken because of a really crappy design from GM and B the rust that swells up and then cracks it plastic. We're gonna explode some of the junk out of here.
Foreign: I Don't think you're going to see any of the cracks until we take it off. Usually they're all busted around the edge where the O-ring is now. I Have no way to take this off without being violent with it. Okay there hammer because we need to save the tank.
Foreign like that. Then we can try to get it moving. Be careful your air hammer doesn't chisel down into the tank. Foreign go all the way.
Grab another rag. Josh Foreign foreign. This one looks like Taft broke. Yeah, sure it is missing half this lock which at the end of the day really doesn't matter.
there's that one. that lock was here broke. Okay, the only nice thing about this style is you don't have to buy all the fuel lines now. grab some brakes on there.
Josh This is Joshua's third fuel pump this weekend. GM so it's getting pretty good at him typically. Uh, you know they're metal and they rot out within a couple years here. And the salt belt say it's funny that? Okay, let's get that.
Now you're going to ask the question of how do I know it wasn't cracked or how I know you know air hammer that didn't crack it? You gotta trust me people, you got it might not be cracked I could be lying to you, but I'm not. Let's see here before you pull it up out of there, we'll give it. Yes, there. she's cracked around there.
You can see it right here. I Don't know if you guys can see it, but we're on a chance here in a second. This is pretty common on plastic sending units metal lock rings and they very conveniently stick it in a well so it gets leveled up with salt and dirt and hits and then you can see right here. hopefully probably a little bit.
should probably crack right there. All right. in case you guys weren't believing me, now you do. Oink there it goes.
A little bit of luck it might fit out I usually make it so tight. well it's got lots of room. well there he is. Take the old o-ring off there.
Uh, you got a less dirty rag? Yeah I'll use this one. This one worked out pretty well because the tank was almost empty. I only had I think if you remember from the first video it said it only had four gallons in it. calculated that's gotta be pretty close to that.
We took it out, it was pretty light but we I mean Josh see the pump there you guys? We swapped the uh fuel level sensor over got some schmoo on it though. Foreign looks pretty good. Make sure you index it correctly when you put it in. We buy OEM units right from the Mad and then a new lock.
Ring Of course because I'm ready from Gm2 because they're cheaper than aftermarket. believe it or not, at least. uh, when we purchase them. Thank you foreign folks. Just a matter of sliding it back together now. but I wanted to bring you along to show you what we're gonna find out. I'll show you what we found out. Okay, so we're saying trust issues going on there.
and if any of your locks those those locks that we took off ain't them are broke, don't get too. Uh, don't get too wound up about it because that's not really what we retains a mind there. but we'll stick them back on because we're making a YouTube video so it just keeps somebody from depressing that tab. I Guess that's about it.
and then this one was half broke so we're not gonna worry about it. it's evap anyway, so if it comes off big deal, it won't come off though so we're not too worried about it now. That's it folks. Uh, thanks for watching foreign.
They make a special tool to take the lock ring off I made my own
Iโve watched several of your videos now and just wanted to say Keep up the great work..! I think anyone thinking about joining your profession, should have to watch your videoโs to learn proper diagnostic procedureโs and work ethic !!
Keep it up ๐and take care
Man i thought i was the only dude having to use a knee pad!! harbor frieght w a coupon!
People are freaking out over how cruel this is but what about the millions of familyโs who do the same thing to their dogs to keep them from barking or keep them within the parameters of their yard. It wouldnโt take much shock at all even barely a sting for the bear to get scared like that because itโs something it isnโt used to. He isnโt being electrocuted. Go watch the full video. Spoiler alertโฆ the bear comes back and figures out where the shock is coming from and disconnects the battery and takes off with the meat. Bears are extremely intelligent.
Awesome video Eric O.
Hey, if ya cant trust someone from Avoca, NY, who can ya trust?
what no fluid film on the new lock ring ?
Brake Kleen..for the Ring..!!
Thanks for the follow up Eric. The rust jobs that you have to do daily is incredible and for the people that don,t believe in what you say and you have to justify what you say and do , well up them.
It's pretty pathetic for GM with engineering facilities in Michigan, where the vehicles are even more rusty than the PRNY (and unsafe with no safety inspections), to put a metal retainer in that location on the top of the tank.
As a desert dweller from the Mountain West, Iโm always shocked by how rusty relatively new cars get in the ole PRNY ๐
Thanks for part two. Whether they are 9 minutes long or an hour or more I always watch your videos completely. There are very few content creators on YT that can be interesting for more than a few minutes. Keep em coming!
Thanks for the sequel. I can't wait for the prequel. That's how Star Wars made Lucas rich and famous.
snap on air hammer?where is big nasty
ah …snap on or big nasty?what happened to big nasty?
Somebody could make some money sellin a good grade stainless lockring up there to the salt belt . If they didn't get to proud of em could sell em to everyone
How filthy. I couldnโt handle living up in PRNY. No way.
I must get bad cans of brake and parts cleaner because the sound effect never plays when I pick one up.
so Eric, is there a torque spec for that metal retainer? ๐
Haven't seen a Gulf gas station in years.
Who is Joseph?
No Fluid Film in the "well"?
i've gotten a dead aftermarket pump once and a few that had incorrect/bad fuel tank pressure sensors and fuel gauge level readings. Also had a tab of one of the pumps nearly get cut in half just from putting fuel ring on. The plastic on some of those are so thin compared to the gm ones. Also worth noting, if you have a fuel capless gm truck 14-18 and you work in a dusty super dirty environment, look into getting a cap or use a bearing buddy that'll fit over it, dirt will eventually infiltrate and take out your fuel pump.
Just curious, do you smoke it again after everything is put back together?
You should put Josh on the spot, ask him if he watches your video's
Safety squints!
Thank you Eric, i really thought that there was that much water coming out of your air hose.I was going to say it is time to put a filter or 2 in the lines..lol.Great job as always.
the facebook? the instie?
I guess the other places didn't want to remove the tank!
So if you can do it, we can't? You never said we can.
Josh you missed a golden opportunity to ask Mr. O if he was having a stroke on account of the way he was talking
So, no other manufacturers have this issue?
Josh just being a sponge, good on him
Ok, ok, ok. I believe you already!
we had to do this on our 2007 suburban in 2019. That's 13 PRNY salty winters! That job SUCKED!
Question!! is there a specific reason for using the green brake cleaner
Nice follow-up….
On fuel pumps, better to go OEM.
I don't know why anyone would not trust you.
The crack in that old sending unit looks like a job for Flex Seal!
(kidding)
Why do I always chuckle with the brake clean thing???
If the engineers had to spend 2 years turning wrenches, cars would be so much better. Thank you for showing this mistake of design Eric. Your work was great as always.
That is a 2017? GM has fallen further than I thought….
No bonus video with the Avoca Smoke-a showing no more leak? ๐
Since I only saw Josh's hands in the video, I thought it was Chris Fix for a moment! Thanks for another great video!!
Phase 4 sending unit..
Can something like this be plastic welded?
That ring and any metal there needs to be more rust resistant. Stainless steel – the good stuff. It might cost GM a dollar more when bought in high volume. Shame !
I thought for sure you were going to spray that with fluid film to keep it from rusting again
Little hooka smoka and some brake cleaner fixed the ladies problem; Well, that and a new sending unit and ring. Guess no body else got a hooka smoker.
Coat of paint works wonder's.
Back in my day, (don't you just love what usually follows something like that?) I would have used some bathtub caulk on that hairline crack and sent it. Of course, shootin; the old parts cannon at her works, too. I guess you got to keep the OEM parts companies in business… At least now that sending unit will outlast the rest of the truck.
I envy Josh! I know he has a tough job, but he's learnin' from the Mastuh! I think you would be disappointed in me, though. I'm a slow learnuh.
I have had a leak for years on my Expedition, No luck finding it, I wish Eric O was close by.
Eric…ever consider packing wheel bearing on lip and lock ring to slow corrosive action down? I dunno…Im just a retired glass guy…still cracked too)๐ณ๐
Eric how many hours do you figure you flag in a week?
Great follow up on replacing the fuel pump ..kinda reminds me of my '88 Ranger. Also great to see some assistant hands in the vid to assist in your re&Re….Good job..to both of you…!!
๐๐โฝ๏ธ
Did the factory metal sender on my 2009. Rusted clear through until it leaked. The ring was so fused with rust it would not turn. I had to cut the ring in half and pull it out
SAW DAT QUACK…NOT TOO DUCKY EITHER!!! (RAIN MAN RAY OR YOU) HAD A HUMMER…MOST LOADED HUMMER I HAVE EVER SEEN…A BEAUTY OF FAKE WOOD GRAIN AND LEATHER…2YO) COME IN WITH ELECTRONIC PROBS…WHATS SICK IS THE QUALITY, UNPROTECTED, AND SOLD, FULL WELL KNOWING OF SALT CORROSIVE AREAS SOLD IN…THIS IS SCREWING THE CONSUMER!!! BARE KNUCKLED ROBBERY!!!
Somewhere once the bean counters took over design and longevity became bitter enemies.
Question for anyone….. 2002 Chev trailblazer. Evap po446 small leak.
When I command the vent valve closed you can hear it click.. Pressure does not change and the valve opens 5 seconds later without being told to.
The purge definatly opens and closes.
On my other truck the vent valve closes and stays closed.
And suggestions?
So glad I live in Florida…. When I pull the tank down after like a quarter million miles, just clear off a little sand and carry on with the rest of the repair.
Fluid film before and after install?.
So nice to see Josh on a video, or at least his hands and foot ! Lol nice work gentleman!
Did I miss ๐the video of you dropping โคตthe tank ??? Will I see๐ a video of you installing โคดthe tank back in place ??? Pretty easy job unless the metal ring was โก๐ฅfused to the pump and won't โbreak free. All seems to of went๐๐ well !!! The mystery โis now will the leak be ๐fixed ??? We'll see what happens in the ๐ฅtest video !!!!!! Can't ๐wait !!!!! You and Josh make a good ๐ท๐ทteam !!!
Nice of you to show the crack in the sender unit.
misses o need to get on your ass for not using hearing protection once its gone its gone
How susceptible to cracking are the plastic elbows used in the various fuel lines?
Also I'm a great believer in using silicone grease to lube the o-rings in the fuel system, because its virtually impervious to gasoline. Its sort of like using anti-seize on the lock ring.
Nice to see Josh in the video albeit his arms only Cheers.
Brass chisel come on live dangerously.
Rather than trying to ban guns in the state of NY, the government in that state should be working on banning rust. It would be far more useful.
Am I the only one that wants to drop off a gallon of super clean and carbon fibre towels to help ๐
Wait just a minute, you left out the part where you pull out the 10 bags of fetanol or is it black tar opee.haha OH ya that only goes on in my neck of the wood, down by Los ANHELES.
Thank you for using a brass drift.
Hate gas tanks. I know – gotta have 'em. But I still hate 'em.
Who cares it the air hammer cracked it you already proved in last video it was leaking if the air amber turns it to dust more power to it long as it's removed who cares
Josh is sure good with that RAG when asked. I guess when you get a new truck you should Fluid Film that metal o ring right away. Thanks
My 10 silverado I bought it used and it had a major fuel odor coming under the bed I took it to a shop to have it checked. They dropped the tank and the whole housing top of the fuel pump was rotted away just a major hole. They Said I don't know how this things still running. So I had to put a brand new pump in it. Super expensive job. Just seeing this fuel tank reminded me of my misfortune
Cant wait for this channel to hit 1M subscribers
No trust issues here!๐คฃ๐
Hi Eric, My wife bought a SMA t-shirt and a coffee mug for me for Christmas. The mug came broken and we have tried to contact Spring the vendor twice but they have not gotten back to us. Can you help us with this? Ty
I trust you Eric, because you always put your money where your mouth is.
Early '90's , we had about 16 E-250's in our fleet. The fuel pumps would fail sometimes twice a year. It seems like every single one was at least 3/4 full or more when they would fail!! haha
Thanks Josh for the help
Mr. O, and Mr. Josh, your attention to meticulous detail blows me away! I doubt that a molecule of contaminant got into that tank from the pump changeout.
Would it help to spritz the area with Fluid Film? A THIN layer of grease like you do on brake calipers? Job security unfortunately if that work is a real pain in the tush! When you were fighting with those connectors I was cussing for you! Mother Lover!
I have to say that it is amazing that you were even able to disconnect the fuel lines to be able to drop the tank. Those silverado fuel line connections are terrible.
no lube to make the lock ring easier to tighten?
I would definitely trust you with all my cars issues..
Nice to see the replacement. Hey how come Josh never even says 'yup' or 'okay' or 'Jesus what a rusty mess'?
All we needed was Mrs O wiping his forehead ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
I would believe you more than any of the politicians we send to Washington.
I get it now, Josh does all of the work only to have Eric come in for the hero shots for the camera. ๐๐๐
No trust issues here.
Nice to see that GM hasnโt changed. They fixed the rotting out fuel pumps that where metal, but still leak fuel vapours. I guess their modification prevents them from paying for a recall. I used to own a 2003 Envoy that had the metal fuel pump leak and GM replaced it under a recall.
coming in with the short videos lately
Why don't they make plastic or composite lock rings that won't rust?
Great follow up Eric O
Ok, here we go haha. No, the air compressor is not blowing out water however I am blowing water and mud off from the tank making it look like water out of the hose I guess…. and yes I spray it with fluid film AFTER I get the tank in place so I don't get it all over my hands putting the tank in. Trust me though, this truck will rot in half before it needs another unit ๐
