Customer Customer States Mechanic Fails Engine Transmission Gas Diesel off road race 4x4 street car daily driver scam dealership dealer technician how to

Hello everybody! Good day to you and welcome back! Glad you guys are here! I Know as always I'm super glad to be here. We are returning to the approved work order on this: Uh Chevrolet 2500 HD Duramax That's right, this is the Lb7 Dirty Max This is the Uh the first version of this Uh Isuzu diesel V8 with a turbine charger. This thing has injector adjustments all over the board. the Uh last episode on.

we pulled out the scan tool after we finally got this thing running with some brake clean and we pulled up the injector adjustments which basically tells us just how much fuel the ECM is giving or taking away from each indid individual injector in order to maintain a smooth idle. In that same video, we checked the aftermarket fuel pump system. Uh, there was, uh, some speculation that there was air being introduced into the fuel system and it turns out that was not the case. What we did is we unhooked the Uh, the fuel line connected the uh uh like a clear hose to it, manually powered the pump on and then as the pump was running, we observed the fuel running through the line and found that there was no air being introduced.

We had checked the engine oil to make sure it wasn't like a gallon over a fill, indicating that there was diesel fuel entering the engine oiling system and found that the oil level was normal and not full of diesel. That guy back right there. So based on the age, mileage, fuel condition, engine oil condition uh, and scan tool data from the injectors, we have determined that this diesel V8 does in fact require a set of fuel injectors. So what we're going to do? Uh I Guess we start from the beginning.

airbox off, air intake coming off, cold side pipe coming off, hot side pipe coming off. Then we will disconnect the AC compressor, stick that thing aside, and then see what else is in our way. So so stay tuned because this is going to be a very, very good video. It's also probably going to be something of a a lengthy V video and I can guarantee you we're not doing all this in one shot cuz this particular job calls for uh, what is it? 12.9 hours labor time? Something like that.

It's it's up there. Yeah, these, uh, these diesel jobs are no joke. It's not like a gasoline engine where we can do the thing in 2 3 hours. There's a lot of stuff going on here, so like I said, we're pulling the airbox off first.

Take a peek at the engine air filter while we're in there. tubes coming off. Lose all that good stuff. Uhoh wo I Just got the weirdest Deja Vu Very strange.

How's this filter looking Brand newish? It's fine, that was not fine. Okay, another hose clamp over here and that'll finish off this intake piping. Grab it, rock it, squeeze it, twist it. There we go.

Going down a little bit south of the alternator here And we're going to pull this uh belt tensioner loose and un tension the belt. We're going to drop that away off the AC compressor, give it a tug off the compressing unit, let that kind of fall down. Uh, we have interference. There we go? Got it? Okie Does AC machines coming in? Let's power this unit on and we're going to recover the refrigerant out of the Uh.
climate control system here. Got two fittings, high side and low side. Snap those guys on and there is pressure in the system I Felt it coming up. That's good.

Beep machine is ready to rock and roll. I Do have the batteries disconnected so uh, there's no fear I'm grounding out the circuits real time clock failure. I Don't think so. What months is it? Whatever.

That's 1980. Yeah, it's 11 1980. There we go. Yeah, whatever.

Yeah, that was fun. Anyway, we're going to go ahead and let that thing recover the Uh AC system or the refrigerant rather. I Don't want to call it Freon because Freon is a brand name. Refrigerant is A, is what it is.

Anyways, let's uh, let's get all this stuff disconnected, unplugged, and prepared to be pulled out of the way. I need a tool for that one? So the concrete guys next door? they're over there grinding away and which is tragically ironic because it's actually closer towards the end of the day and I have not uh, at any point heard heard them going at it today and I Also, haven't been filming all day today and now that I've started, they have also seemed to have started. Um, let's see this harness. I Want to get this whole harness out of here and it looks like to me that I'm going to have to disconnect it down here where I can't really reach anything.

Can you guys see that little little guy right there? Come here you. uh I almost had it and I lost it and then I had it. This wire is going to run over to the low side pressure switch cycling switch on the Uh accumulator dryer or receiver dryer receiver dryer SL Accumul accumulator. That's what it is Anyway, harness is disconnected.

Why are you guys yelling over there? Kids are out of school so they're here and they're doing their kid fighting thing. There's another connector right down there. That one's the uh, the float level connector for the coolant model. Let me pop that one out.

All these connectors have not been disconnected in quite some time. says I There we go. Set that one aside. Oh, look at here.

there's our ECM and it appears to be water cooled. Or the bracket is water cooled. It's a water cooled computer. Uh, correction, that's not the ECM that is a fuel injector control module.

I Believe that's what we have here, not the ECM Ecms are over there on every Chevrolet ever except the new stuff, but that doesn't really count. Um, out connector. Now, my customer had stated that this truck had had a uh uh, what was it a um, dangly wire down there? What is this? Don't know. Anyway, they had stated that a CP3 pump had been replaced in this and uh, I'm wondering when because this stuff looks like has not been dis.

excuse me disconnected in quite some time. Let's drop that belt off there. I'm going to probably end up pulling the alternator off as well. So yeah, AC hoses, nater, and AC compressor.
All that stuff's coming off so we're going to need a 15, 13 and a 15 again. All righty. alternator bolts are coming out first. Got two of them.

two and only two probably need to pull the fan shroud out as well. Like I said before, I've never had to do an Lb7 set of injectors I know how to do them, but I've never done them on this particular engine before. Okay, Nator should be unbolted and loose. so let's just give it some fry action here to separate the alternator mounts from the uh, the bracket mounts on the accessory.

Drive Pull this guy up and out and I forgot the the big connector. Why is that all chewed up with looks like pliers were on it. Look at that that thing's chewed up to Pieces Okay, no match. We will just uh, just disconnect it.

Is that double nutted unkick? Oh, that's tight too. Someone put that on with pliers. Wow. Hope I didn't break the the stud out of it.

That was a kind of a violent little snap right there. Oh man, yeah, that's on there. Pleases come off with some efficiency. That thing is very very much not wanting to turn.

Got it? Set that right right there and then I'll take that nut and put that back on so it does not get lost cuz that would be bad. Well not really. I just replaced it with another one. but still.

things we don't want to do. Come on out. Dr44g Nater Hey, what's the difference between the Gr 44s and the Gr44? Gs Does anyone know it's trademarked? but I don't know. They appear to be the same units.

Okay AC Compressor time coming up, the system is discharged. Pop that guy off, set you aside, we'll put the bolts back where they go, pop this one off, set that one aside, bolts back where they go, and then we need, uh, switch out to the 15 mil, pull this unit out, set you aside I'll leave the bolts in the brackets that way. I know where they go Okie do so. we've got our coolant draining.

so I'm going to pull this coolant hose going back to our turbo. We're going to lose this thing right here. Well, I'm not going to lose it it. but I am going to disconnect it and pop it out of here.

Come out Coolant. Yeah. I Pulled the valve already down below at the radiator so it should be draining out or about finished draining out right about now. Yep, that's dry.

So let's go ahead and pull the bracket for this hose off first. I Need the right size socket? How about a 12, not a 13? wobbly, wobbly, round two in the smaller version? Let's see if we can't get that to come out of there or not? No. Oh, there it goes. Okay, got one out.

so that's uh, that's for the bracket over here. Let's get the thermostat housing disconnected. Next, Uh, no. Why? it's the extension robbing me of impact.

clickagy Without that, uh, that fancy wobble extension business. they come right out no problem. Zippity Okay, that is our thermostat housing. dual thermostats.
See that one high temp, one low temp. Set these guys aside. Okay, next up, let's pull this entire upper radiator hose assembly off. so all we need to do is disconnect it.

Get over there harness. We just need to disconnect it from the radiator by releasing the clamp and wiggling the the uh, the unit out of position here. Mir Clamp Going to need bigger pliers with the the appropriate amount of Leverage Because that is a very serious clamp right there. That clamp is a no joke.

Like wooo. You see that these clamps are also supposed to latch on themselves once you open them up. Danger, danger, Danger I Want it to. Oh, this clamp is connected to the hose also.

So I'm going to have to peel this hose back with that clamp still in position. Maybe I can just wiggle it off some kind. There we go. Got her un stuckage little bit of leaking action here.

Let's pull this guy out and get it out of the way. Set this thing aside as well. Yeah, there's our ECM it's down there hiding out. or maybe that one's the TCM and down there's the ECM.

Either way, we have modules. And speaking of them, speaking of modules, let's get those disconnected. We got a 28 pin primary connector and a 32 pin connector. They just unsnap and pull back nice and easy.

Like then I believe those are fuel injectors. So let's get all the injector harnesses disconnected and we'll pull the Fick them off there. All types of stuff to uh to remove here. Okay, let's pull this harness back and it looks like we've got a power wire here.

This big red one running over to I Think that's the glow plug control module. So let's get that guy unbolted. I think that's a 12 mil 13? Yeah, 13 it is. So let's get.

Uh, let's get that guy disconnected. That wasn't even very tight. A little impact did not impact. Okay, we've got a power wire here or something thing.

I wonder if that's the wire that runs down to power up that uh, fuel pump down below? That could be it. Either way. I'll put that nut back on and we can pull this piece of the harness away and out here we go. Ah, but I do need a 12 for the bracket bolt for these two connectors.

Let's pull these guys out. Let's see. set that off to the side, which it does not go very far, but it's farther than it was here. There's a connector.

let's unconnect that one. Not certain what that one is for and it looks like we're down to some piping. Let's start pulling some of these charge air cooler pipes off. I Think we need 11 mm sockets for those and why is it 11? I don't know.

Uh, it's not cuz that doesn't fit either. Well, it it did fit, but it didn't bottom out. So you answer your question. why is it 11? Because it's a band clamp and that's just how they are I Didn't make the rules.
it's just the way it is. Okay, that gu dang look at all that there's some nasty going on inside of that turbine. Okay, more connectors to disconnect a bunch of them down there on the bottom. Yeah, there's one over here.

Got to figure out where they're connected from. Disconnect them, then reroute them from under these fuel lines here. Gravitos. or better yet, I can just Disconnect the fuel lines and then I don't have to pull those out from under the fuel lines because the fuel lines will not be in the way.

Hey hey now I'm using my noodle. There we go. Okay, Fuel line disconnect tool coming in. This is going to slide down inside of uh, that little fitting there and press in the little tabs that lock this fitting into place and allow me to slip it off.

Yeah, See those little tabs in there? There's four of them I Think well, those have to be pushed in in order to release that uh, fuel line there. So here we'll slide that one in I Don't think that's the right size we'll see I Don't think that's it. Uh, negative or it's not deep enough. Ah, there it is.

Got it. Oh, it was deep enough. Ah, Okay, so what do we have here to contend with Next, we've got that's a connector. Got this little blue one here and and just uh yeah, it just looks like these two here.

these bolted on power cables here. these are the outputs I Believe that go to the individual Banks of injectors or uh, injectors glow plugs. That's what I meant glow plugs because this is the gravity I heard it hit the ground. We're good because this is the glow plug control module.

that's a not the injector control module I Got my mod Dro that one too. It's fine, it's I hit it, hit the ground I Heard it. Let's just throw all the parts on the floor and see what happens. Um, two more.

Fasteners I Can't get those with this gun here. Let's try this gun. you going to fit in there, don't fall out. Oh that one's weird.

Look, it's studded. That's a it's a whole Bolt type of deal going through there. We'll put that nut back on. there's that one and the last one.

Let's thread that guy off and that one is not a bolt that seems to be falling its way through. Okay, well put those nuts and washers back cuz what I wanted was this little harness assembly business out of the way which is kind of out of the way but not all the way. so let's lose this. uh, what is that PCV crank case ventilation pressure that's going between both valve covers.

so let's get this pipe removed. Then we can dig these guys out from under it and get that harness out of the way because this here harness is very much in the way. and once that's out of the way, we'll be able to gain some access to these, uh, injector fuel lines. There's eight of them.

Each individual line gets its own injector po that guy out. Okay, so right down here we've got the primary power wire connecting to the first glow plug in the series and I've got to pull that little nut out and then get the wire disconnected from the plug cuz that was kind of hanging on to everything. So now the whole driver side of the engine here is disconnected, uh, from the harnesses. So we've got some access to the valve cover some, but not all of it.
Anyway, we've got to pull these fuel lines off. Each one of those has to be replaced, they cannot be reused or they will leak. And then once these fuel lines are off, then we can pop this cover off of here, get that guy removed, and that'll give us, uh, access to the uh, the rest of the fuel system which is all encased inside of the valve covers, but we are not quite ready to break the seal just yet. We need to get over here to the passenger side and continue some disassembly.

Let's get the charge air pipe disconnected. uh I might have to pull this all the way off the CAC and I I might be able to just leave it here. It depends on how much space we get once it's uh, pulled off of the tube over here or how much Flex it has rather. I I don't know, we might have to just remove it entirely and I think I will cuz it's not wanting to budge I can't get the sideways enough sideways out of it to get.

Uh, get to come off of the Y bridge and need an extension. So I can extend my efforts because the uh, the Fastener is right down. Way Down Yonder Let's throw some illuminators in there. There it is.

Now we can see. Yeah, that's the the other 11 mil. Let's take this guy loose. Loosey Goosey Now there we go.

Got her. So that came loose. Got it off of the Y bridge? Let's just keep kind of rotating it some and wiggling it back and it should pop out of that boot down there at the cooler. There we go.

Hello pipe. Stick you right on over here on the shelf and you stay there. We're going to take some towels and stick them in the front of that pipe right there. and I've also got towels in the front of that one you guys didn't see but there are towels in it h this one.

Sure, why not? We'll shove a towel in that one too. There we go. So over here we're looking at the other side of what I was calling that PCV pipe. I I Don't know what that one exactly does, but I do see that it is connecting both valve.

blah words, valve covers. and I also can see that it's got a uh a T fitting in it which comes out to I think right here under this hose. So that's A. It's a three-way piece of pipe and we need to unpe it and get it off of our covers.

Let's try some leverage here. was pry up on it with the uh, little pry driver. It's coming out, but maneuvering it all the way out might be fun. Goes: Where are we headed to here? It's this one which bolts to something I need to get this out from under this intake tube.

I Think yeah, I'm getting a little little bit stuck here. No matter, we'll just disconnect it some more. So over here we got one more hose clamp. This has been removed been replaced before because it has these screw type hose clamps.
Uh, usually it's going to have a constant pressure type of clamp like that one on the uh upper radiator hose that we saw. Usually don't find these types of clamps unless someone's replace them uh during a service. So what we'll do? Try to fish this thing out of here as best as I can. The three-way part of the te is getting hung up and I need to push this back in further.

which I can't do? Let's pull some brackets off like that one. Yep. I Give up bracket removal time here. Let's work on that torx fastener here.

Unkick! Ah my Torx got stuck or my hex got stuck. Allen bit. You guys call it a hex or an allen. What do you call it? Well, it's stuck what ever it is.

Anyway, that bracket's loose. kind of let's pull. Let's pull everything out of there that we can. We got the harness mostly disconnected.

It looks like there's just looks like one more wire that oh, that's going down to the CP3 Okay, that one's for the fuel pump. A high press injection pump. We do not wish to break that connect door. That's an important one right there.

Okay, we're mostly disconnected. There's a coolant temp sensor right in front of me. Let's pull that one off. That should be enough to just kind of keep this out of the way.

Yep, there we go now. I Can get some access to the rest of this Hardware Here that guy's loose and this is a coolant hose that's a heater hose running over here to looks like the thermostat housing. So we've got one more more 12 mil. Let's pull that hose off.

Hello hose. Okay, that's the side. We're going to put that bolt back in the hole so it does not go anywhere I Need that for later. So now can pull this guy out of the way and we can extract this uh hose that runs over to the other side.

I Think it's getting pinched by the the wastegate actuator on the Turbo Move over so you guys can see. Yeah, there's our our vacuum actuator on the turbo right there. It's getting pinched just below that. but I got her.

We'll put that right up here and we'll leave that in its orientation that way. I Don't get it. Uh, flip-flopped and confused and turned around. Take that side.

So we've got coolant, coolant, and some brackets for this. uh, injection control module. Let's go ahead and pull these brackets off and pull this module away. All right.

So upon closer, uh, inspection here I found that if I pull these bolts off for this module, it's not really going to go anywhere because this coolant line is a hard line and it doesn't seem. Yeah, it routes under here which I can't get it out cuz it's it's under that bracket I it runs all the way over Yonder and then this one's flexible which is fine, but I don't hey, I'm just going to I'm just going to take these off. That's what that's what I'm getting at. We're just going to remove these I'll have to put new crush washers in, but is what it is here.
17 mil. Pull these banjo bolts out. this should be coolant, right? coolant, engine, coolant, antifreeze, and I dropped one. So one thing about doing this kind of work on a diesel: every single component needs to be accounted for.

Uh Once Upon A Time In Another Life I was doing a set of injectors on a 67 Ford Diesel and each one of those 67 injectors has a copper Crush Washer down at the nozzle at the base of the injector. Now now that particular engine design, the valve covers also double up as a uh uh as the intake manifolds for each cylinder head. So right next to those injectors, there's an intake port for the air to flow into. Well, what had happened is I had pulled the injectors out of it and I did not notice that the Crush Washer stayed behind.

it didn't stay in its position because when I look down in the holes of the flashlight I never saw them. So a couple days goes by I get my new set of injectors I put my uh, my Cp4 pump in I get everything glowing back together and I'm 95% of the way done and I start going through doing a parts check on what I have left over and what I what I've got to install and I was missing one of those little crush washers. So I'm looking around, looking around, looking around I can't find it I'm looking under the car feeling inside of the frame rail. everything.

looking on the lift, you know I mean this is a A Ford F550 tow truck you? This thing was massive but I'm looking everywhere for this little piece of crushable copper and I can't find it. So I determined that somehow someway it fell wrong way. it fell into the engine. So I went upstairs and I go talk to the boss I was like hey boss listen we're all done I got that truck back together he's like okay and I said there's a and he's like all right, what's the problem and I said I'm missing one of these little copper washers right here and he goes okay, order a new one and I said no, you don't understand I need to find it I need to find it because if I dropped it and it fell into that engine and I don't know where it is, we need to get it out.

Otherwise when we hit that key boom, we're going to blow up an engine. It's going to absolutely destroy something because you can't run metal through an engine. They don't like that they run on air and fuel, not metal. So reluctantly he gave me the well, not reluctantly.

he was really pissed, but he gave me the look and he's just like whatever. go do whatever you got to do. So he pretty much kicked me out of the office and I proceeded to tear that engine down uh for a second time. Now let me explain to you guys something.

Uh, the first time might take a while. the second time a mechanic has to do something. It happens immediately. like instantaneous.
It's like a super that we summon from out of nowhere. So an hour goes by I pull this entire half, the half the engine down cylinder heads apart on it, the intakes off and I Look Down in the Hole Again, went in there with a boroscope and I found that that stupid little Crush Washer was hanging out like right next to the edge for the intake. Port It was right there. had I touched that key on that engine and turned it over and it sucked in some air.

It would have sucked up that little Crush Washer right into the combustion chamber and blowing up an engine. So make sure all your pieces are accounted for or it might cost you $20,000 All right. Well, while we're here, let's pull this bracket off. That's uh, that's got to go away next.

All right series of 12 mm. Fasteners Coming back in, zip these guys right out or not. haha. You lose, Got it? And there's another at the bottom of this dipstick tube.

The question is is do I have to pull the tube or can I just get real sneaky and pull the bolt out I'm going for option B or not I'm going for up gravity? yeah I don't care. I'm still going for option B just with A with a bigger gun. How about that? Look, get the 3/8 gun, not the/ Qu inch gun. Ha, got it? Yeah! I I Dislike pulling out dipstick tubes.

They're no fun. Continuing disassembly, We are near the point where we can access, uh, this valve cover right here. but uh, there's a couple of supporting little brackets and whatnot that are in the way. Uh, like this little fuel test port right here.

We've got to unbolt this and this and this to clear this hose to get that out of the way. Then I Think we can pull the injector lines that'll be coming next. so 12 mm back in Action Ow. Next one, stick that thing aside.

just a little bit of space at a time. That should be enough to pull this cover back. Uh, there's that one I Think well guys I Think that's all for Uh for this side over here, let's crack these injector lines loose and get these things removed. I Think we need a 19 mm let's see 19 wrench coming in? I Believe yipper, look at that.

Cracker Loose. We got to disconnect the line from was on there from the fuel rail as well. There's the rail here, one on each side and then four individual lines going to each individual injector. Now, these lines are not to be reused.

That is a standard protocol for high-pressure fueling that we do not reuse these guys because they may not seal properly and when you apply 25 30,000 PSI a fuel press pressure behind them, they could leak in a very fine Mist which would be atomized and fuel is designed to explode under combustion or to combust uh, while atomized. And so, one could theorize that reusing these introduces the possibility of uh, causing a fire due to atomized diesel fuel that's going to that's going to take a while to get out of there. And these hard lines are also not bendable so you don't buy cheap ones. If you have to replace them, you've got to buy the OE or a reputable brand I would advise against Chinesium anyway.
Inducer line number one and we simply, uh, repeat the process. See this right here. This is why we have to replace. Another reason why we have to replace these lines.

You see all that rust built up right there. There's no way that that guy is going to seal very well. Additionally, these things fill up with a condensed water. When you crack these open, it dumps out all that rust water and it ends up under the valve cover, which will then run down into the engine crank case.

And that's not exactly what we're looking for to fill our crank case up full of rust water. Anyway, that's three down. We have one more to go. Let's pull this.

Uh, pull this retainer tab off over here. We'll pull the last injector out or injector line out. Then we can remove the actual cover. Come out there, we go.

That's the last one. So all four injector lines have been removed. We'll set those SCS aside for later. Now we can get to work on our actual valve covers and we can see our first Glimpse at the injectors right here.

They're down below in the holes. Let's see what do we need here. We're looking like a Torx bit. Okay, let's go grab ourselves a it's not a Torx it's an Allen.

That one's 730 seconds. That's a negative. Let's try 530 seconds. Okay, how about a 5 mm.

Instead, it's a 5 mm Allen ke. So let's uh, let's crack these guys loose. Oh, these are going to come apart no problem. Nice epic unclick.

Listen to this one here. it's going to be great. Oh yeah, so what I'll do is just kind of crack them all loose. That one slipped out.

We'll crack them all loose and then zip them out with a uh with the gun here. Now these are I think two-piece valve covers. There's an upper and a lower I Believe yeah, there's one set of perimeter bolts and then there's another set below that and I don't know if I've got to pull the uh the lower cover apart or not. I guess we'll find out when we get there.

Uh, like I said previously when we started this job, I've never done an injector job on the Lb7 Duramax done the others but not the not this version which is the first version. the OG The gravity of the A tools got it. The gravity of the situation here. This is awkward.

Turtle There's no space to get things into the holes that I need to fill another slippage. Oh, there's one hiding right there I Missed that one. Let's get this guy loose. Loosey Goosey Oh I Didn't miss it or it was already loose I forgot shortterm memory is not functioning.

might be like Rona brain or something. Got the uh, the cof head cold fuzz, the foggy crane brainium. I What do we got? left? One or two or three or four more. Got a couple in the back.

having a hard time going have to shorten this to a different uh. have to get a different one. That's what I'm saying that one I cannot get, uh, get access to so I have to switch my tool out to the the stubby version. There's one in the back back there.
there always is loose I'll just have to go in and spin that one out by hand. No need to try to shove a tool back there into those confined spaces. Come on. I think I'm down to just two left, one down there and another right up top right there.

Do two more to go on this side that was loose. twist it exciting right, unscrewing bolts. Okay, so the one in the back need one more tool and we'll uh, we'll finish that one out next. Oakly doy.

last one coming in, it's the shorty version. ow hit my uh myself. quit hitting yourself. Come out, come out you silly little thing goty.

Okay, that should be all of the perimeter bolts going around the top half of this cover. I Don't feel any more in the rear. Let's get a uh a pry driving device here here and try to, uh, crack this cover loose I can find something to pry against Negative: I Really can't get under it with anything. Maybe I'll smack it with a mallet a couple times.

That could help I missed one front and center staring right at me in the face and I missed it. Oops, Well, a flashlight, no worries. Tell you what, we'll just uh, we're going to pry bar this. this a little tab right here is sticking out I'm going to get under that and just try to tap this off with a little Hammer right here.

We'll give it a couple love Taps and see if it cracks loose. Uh, no. seriously, Why here? let's try some curvy angular pry bar underneath that tab. We'll pry it towards us.

Here we go. Oh yeah, got it. The sealant has let go and we have removed the cover top half the cover. So uh, it appears someone has indeed been here before.

I See a bunch of silicone sealant? Okay, so you've got one connector here that's running these two injectors, another connector back here that's running these two injectors, and we've got our injector return line right down there and it does appear I'm going to have to pull off this uh, second cover. so more perimeter bolts on that cover is coming up next. And the reason I'm going to need to take this other valve cover off is I will not be able to take the return line off of these injectors with this larger base valve cover still attached. So let's go ahead and start pull in.

Uh Fasteners here. Not that one. Okay Loosey Goosey This one doesn't really seat very well. bunch of dirt in there.

but now it does cuz it was hammer time. Oh no, you don't, you are going to turn there. we go. Yeah, it was like Hey I'm going to strip out and I said hey, no, you're not.

Why is there a piece of metal sitting there? It's like a metall looking pin. What is this doing here? Check this out guys. Look at this. Come here metal pin.

Look at that. Why Why is this thing sitting here? Nobody Knows The shadow knows. Okay, a couple more Fasteners many more actually. let's go ahead and cruise the perimeter.
or cruise around the perimeter of this thing. Get the rest of these guys broken loose and we'll get the bottom cover or bottom half of the cover there. Oh you know what? I think that that's a two-piece cover cuz it allows for some rocker arm adjustments. Yeah, those are adjustable.

I Believe that's why that provision exists. Come on now. Crack loose. There we go.

It did what I asked it to do. That was sweet and we're just going to run down the line here and get all of them. I Can't imagine what happens if you strip these out like what does it do? Do you have to drill them and extract everything? Ooh that one felt like it was going to strip too good. loose.

need the short one? Where's my shorty shorty? Okay, bottom corner that was loose there. another one right there behind it. That one's coming out good. They're all doing what they should be doing.

This is good and nobody can see. Terrible cameraman upper left corner there's another loose is going down the line dece and we're at the center. Did I get this one yet? Sure did. Good to go.

So now let's just pull all these fasts out. Set them aside. Little Grommet right there. We need not lose that, although my valve cover, gasket set will have new grommets.

What we don't know is if it's going to have the metal pieces that go into them. So I'm going to save everything and not discard until the finalized moments. Come here, see, it's all about the appropriate angles for your dangles there. This tool doesn't exactly fit in here, but if it's manipulated and point it in the right direction, you can squeeze it in almost anywhere.

even all the way out back. I Said almost cuz I'm running out of the ability to use this tool on the rest of these. uh, res. these bolts back here have to switch out to the little stubby unit and do the rest of this manually.

There's one bolt way out in the back behind behind the head. Sorry, this stupid hose is in the way. everybody. there's that flashlight again there.

that one won't turn by hand yet. Come on there we go. O Negative I'm ahead of myself. Uh, it appears that I can't get this lower cover out until I Pull these.

uh, these wiring harnesses off. so let's unbolt these four these two. Then we can pull these wires off of the injectors. very carefully.

Crack those guys loose. This is very delicate. stuff in here feels delicate I've never, uh, broken injector Parts before. so I don't know how delicate they are or are not.

but it is plastic screwdriver bit I wonder if these nuts are going to stay on the wire or if they come off? I think they're captured. Yeah, that's a nuts captured. That's good as long as it doesn't fall off and fall down to the engine. I Think we're fine.
So we'll pull these four guys off, removing them from the injectors. All four of those guys. Good good, good, good good. 10 mil, 10 mil and then that unit comes right out.

Okay, 10 coming in. Okay. Retrieving my extension that fell off cuz it's a not a Primo level extension. It did not grip very well.

That is our harness for two of the injectors. Let's pull the next one out and then we'll get this cover off. There are many, many layers to this onion that must be pulled back and that's also tyght Yeah, Come on. Nope.

Switch that back out to uh, the wrench here. There we go. Okay, come off please. Thank you Good, you know.

So my fear of the unknown here is causing me to take an excessively long amount of time to do this. But now that we've established that this, uh, shouldn't be that hard to do and risk is minimal, we can upgrade the tool usage here a little bit except for that, uh, extension. Yeah, look at this. So there's the there's that husky extension that's the one that kept falling off.

This one is a Snap-On extension that probably will not keep falling off, but that one does not retain. Look at that. just Falls right out and this one snap. That one's good.

So this is the one we'll be using. I'm no longer interested in the Husky cuz it's not doing what I want come out there we go and since that that, uh, accumulators in the way I can pull the extension out now. can't figure out which tools I want to use this I'm getting frustrated here. There we go next.

Okay, back where we had left off now I guess I'm in a position to pull this, uh, lower cover out of here I think so what I will do is get behind it with this angular pry bar right right here and we're just going to pry up. It cracks loose. Good to go easy. So come back around and pull this piece of the panel out and we will remove here.

Let's lose the leaves so they don't end up becoming ingested. Let's lose that piece of sealant cuz that did become ingested. Come here a piece of stick or whatever you are now I'm wondering if I can if I can get these injectors out without pulling off these rockers and I think I can. Yeah, I should be able to.

So what we've got to do next is disconnect to remove this return line. So we've got one Fastener here and then one on each one of the injectors. and these are the return circuits. After the way this works is after that, you got your volume of fuel coming into the injectors through the Uh through the fuel rail.

Well, that rail is always Under Pressure Therefore, the injectors are always under pressure, there's always some bypass, and then there's some return. So as that injector fires it allows the uh the return to have some fuel. So what that's going to do is continue to move fuel through the system and it's going to carry away heat through these returns and then just send that back to the tank like we discussed in the Uh the previous video. So the fittings on these return line looks like a Torx bit.
Let's try the Torx 30 here. see if that's the one. Ooh it's going to break my bit. It's not okay.

let's try it again real fast. I Was watching the bit turn but the Fastener did not and it's that's going to strip. It's not okay. Are these torqus? or are they, uh, are they not torqus? Maybe these are the same F metal that the others were.

And let's try the next one in the line here and see what that one does. Heard It Go snap. It's not wanting to turn. It's not okay.

getting uh, scarred to make me nervous. those things need to come loose unclick. Oh no no no no no, it's bad. It's not okay.

Let's try this first one again. Okay, why over here tripping at the Finish Line guys Hammer this one in. get in there. That's not going to work for me.

Okay, let's try some of these other ones here. two in the back. The thing is, we're not getting these injectors out unless I can get this return line off because the hold down and clamps are under the return line so they have to come out. It just has to not like like that.

It doesn't though. Come on, get behind it some and give it a push from this side. Nope, it's not working here just for fun. Let me see if I can't get this to turn by gripping it from the outside with some uh, some parrot jaw pliers here I don't know I don't think this is going to work either for the try but I don't think it's n that's not going to happen.

Come on, What do I do guys? What do I do? It's not doing any of the things that I need it to be doing. getting scarred I'm engaging in the definition of insanity by trying this again. but I really don't know what else to do except for start chopping and I don't really want want to chop things apart. Oh this.

I'm I'm ruining this uh this little stud here. Yeah guys. I'm I'm up a creek all of a sudden this is not okay. Yeah, that's just stripping out right inside of the hole.

That's great. Yep I know see a little turbo looking extractor socket. We will try to pull these guys off from the outside Hammer that bad boy on and then try to spin it off with a larger ratchet and if this doesn't work I might be cutting these off which I don't want to but I've got to get them off so let's see if they come loose. Oh it's gripping.

Oh yeah yeah buddy. I think I got it. those were yeah yeah I got her stupid tight. Unbelievable.

Okay so now we I've got a a way to get these apart. This will work now I don't know if there's a seal behind there I think there is I'm going to leave this thing threaded on and take them all loose before we do anything else. unless I lose that tool forever. All right.

Well, forever was only about 90 seconds I found it. so let's hammer on Hammer this on to the next one and continue to extract or drop my tool. Oh man. Now in theory, since these are like reverse fluted or whatever, this thing should become tighter as I try to twist it should.
There we go. That one came off off good. Crack her loose. let's try it without hammering it on and see what.

uh what happens on the next one here. I Just set it up into place and let it dig its own way in. Yep, nice. I Don't know why we couldn't have just stuck a bolt on that instead of these uh, little Torx businesses.

but I'm also not an engineer I just work here. Good knuckle busting opportunity. this whole truck. Okay, those are all for now.

Loosey Goosey We need to disconnect right here. That little guy right there. That one's got to get pulled off I think that's a 13 mil, maybe a 12. instead.

there we go and again. I Fear that there's a Crush Washer under that. so I'm not going to unthread that all the way just yet. Not until we can achieve some kind of Freedom with the with this component.

Okay, let's spin these loose a little bit or not. Okay, seriously, why I know we'll do the pliers again to recck it loose and then we can use the little Torx to spin the thing out there turned sort of turned seriously back with the turbo socket. Again, that one's loose. That one's loose.

front one's loose and let's do a double check on our rear. Rear is not loose, but it will be. Oh, it will be there. we go now.

the rear. Loops So I'm going to back all these out some so I can pull the return hose away from the injectors. Got to say I was getting a little nervous here fellas. This one was making me kind of scared and I didn't like it and I didn't depreciate it and I Also, do not think that I'm at much risk of losing components down inside of this engine, so we're just going to go ahead and go full send on disassembly here.

Pull that guy out. We're going to detach them all the way. 100% leave them in there just in case there is a crush gasket. it can't fall out I know I already said that.

Okay, I think so far we're okay. Yep, all right, let's get rid of the 12 up top. Oh, she's loose. Here we go.

Okay, unit is disconnected. Let's go ahead and pull this out of here. Pull ourselves out of here a little bit. Let's go examinate this component.

see what we're looking at here. So like I said, this is the return line and there is a gasket here. There is one here accounted for, accounted for and and that one there is also accounted for. so we have nothing left out inside of the engine Again, We're going to take this unit.

set that aside for later or or not later, but it's going over there I don't know if there's pieces on it I'll need to reuse. uh, maybe I got to reuse the bolts I hope not cuz I gouged them up with my uh, turbo extractor sockets. but if I do need to reuse them, there's no way to get new ones I've got them over there. Okay, okay, well now for the fun part.
let's try to get these injectors out. We can see they've got a clamp at the hold down mechanism right there. Each one has one in the same spot and we need to pull that guy out. and I can't see what kind of Fastener it is.

Is it Torx or is it hex? I think that's a hex Fastener that one's flowing oil out of it. Yeah, let's go get a hex fast. I think it's like a a 13, maybe a 12 mm. Let's try.

No, it's not that big. Let's try the eight. Maybe it's the eight, the H8 Hector 8 and the eight fits perfectly. Nice.

Okay, big. ratchet coming in cuz I Imagine there's some Hefty torque on these hold down clamps right here. Let's crack them loose loose. Oh yeah, yep, that one's coming loose.

Nice, good, good, good. Next, hold down clamp. Make sure you wiggle those guys in deep so they uh, they bottom out you don't want to strip the rim of the Fastener that might have been what I was doing with those. uh, those other ones the uh, injector return lines.

There we go. That one's loose and the one out back also loose coming out good, good, good, good. Power Tool 30 It is time to do this faster. No what? What is with me in gravity today? This is crap.

Oh well. I heard it hit the ground. can't get that out just yet. Okay, there we go.

Bolt recovered in the bin. Let's get the uh, the rest of them loose. thanky And that's all for those Fasteners Now Oh cool. So the injectors are kind of moving around.

Look at that, That one's free. That one's free. Here's how what we're going to do I will take one of the lines and screw that line into the injector. See that Now what I have is a handle to pull this unit out and that is our fuel inject gravity.

There's our fuel injector right there and the little hold down right here. And just like my 67 story from earlier, little Crush Washer that did not come out. So now I'm just going to go on down the line and repeat procedure with the remaining units, taking care to not drop out my hold down again. That was my oversight.

Okay, nothing really crazy that I'm noticing here on these units externally. but the wear always happens inside. at the pencil valve. look at that, it's bubbling.

Why is this injector bubbling? See that? I should not have a bubble there. There's no reason for that to be there. Okay, do we have internal leaks? Next one coming out. Give it a wiggle and a tug.

How's this guy looking? I'm taking a look at the uh. all the buildup at the end right there. Yeah. a lot of carbon on this unit.

Okay. Lauren hi, what you doing back there? Uh talking? Oh yeah. I'm pulling injectors out of this. Oh, that looks greasy.

Yeah, it's it's a diesel. That's what they do. Looks greasy and dirty. It's it's just oil.

just lubricant. And that's our last injector on this side. That's four and four removed. Four units removed.
All righty. Next up, we're going in with a pick because the other three Crush washers did not come out of the injector cups. So I've got to retrieve those guys. I should just be able to reach in and kind of grab a hold of them and pluck them right out.

There's one there. Three of those guys removed. Good. Okay, last one got it all.

righty folks. I Believe At this point we have extended and exhausted the amount of uh available video time that is acceptable. Uh, for you guys, the YouTube viewer audience? uh to be entertained. Uh, meaning this video is too long and I'm going to go and close this one out right now.

Uh, I will do such things as always by letting you know that there will be a part three on this truck and that's when I'm going to go ahead and pull down this other side. Uh, we've got a boatload of Parts on order I don't know who I'm going to use for my injectors just yet. Uh, the Bosch ones that are supposed to go in here are remarkably expensive and I've been considering uh, using some SNS diesel injectors. Um, not really as an upgrade, but I do know that their quality is uh, is through the moon on on such things, but we also don't have this thing pulled down just yet.

So next episode, probably tomorrow. I'm going to go ahead and pull this other side down over here. We're going to remove those injectors out of this end. Uh, we need to pull off this glow plug control module still and then a similar procedure.

On this side, we've got to lose. Uh, lose the injector lines and get the valve cover removed now. I Think rather than um, taking this cover off in two pieces like I did on that side, we'll just pull the perimeter bolts out or no actually no I can't do that because I've got to get the uh wiring harnesses disconnected. Yeah, so never mind.

Scratch that. we are going to have to do that the nearly The Identical way as uh as the other side over here. but like I said earlier I'm going to have to save that for the next one. This one is running too long.

So again, and as always, thank you guys for watching this video. Certainly hope you enjoyed this video. Uh, let me know what you think about diesel fuel systems in the comment section down below. Do not forget to tap that like button while you're down there.

And most importantly, coffee Coffee! It's delicious! Thank you guys for watching. See you later! Have a great day in a video in a durx in a Silverado bye have a good day. Got to say End of transmission. Oh oh end of transmission.

If you don't want to call refrigerant "FREON" then you should probably not want to call hex keys "Allen wrenches" since Allen is a brand name.

Just some advice never use an impact on the Allen screws when it’s tight. If you strip that you’re going to half to use a torque bit to fit with a hammer for removal or an easy out. It’s a really bad habit for us mechanics

So.. are the engineers idiots who do not know how to design an easy to repair car? No. The idea is to make repairs as labor intensive as possible and consequently expensive , so that at some point even the simplest one will cost too much and the owner will be forced to buy a new car. Why not? Everybody complains and bitches and cries about it, but does absolutely NOTHING. They will buy the same brands over and over again like sheep. Zero self respect.

If those copper washers are aything like those used on old motorcycle brake systems you can anneal them. Once used they work harden, if reused as is they may not seal. Annealing softens them back to an as new condition. This is done by heating the copper washers red hot and let them cool off. Either air cooled or quenched works.
Many times i have had to do this to get a good seal. New replacement washers don't always fit those old lines. Annealing the old is the only way to get a good seal.

Ugh! Those injector return lines. I hate it when I get those soft metal bolts. Hopefully you have a reverse turbo socket to put them back on.

Hex or Allen bolt the answer is yes! Dayum still using flat blade on hex hose clamps! Flat blade screwdrivers are only good for opening paint cans! Great video! Curious to what a set of injectors cost!

LB7, Duramax's first gen fuster cluck. This is why I stuck with cummins. Stripped heads on fuel line bolts, This is why you hire a competent diesel specialist to do work on a diesel and not an we do everything shop.

It’s a back breaker of a job. And you need to be a contortionist and have eyes like an owl so you can see in the dark shadows.
I don’t know how you do this day after day.

  55. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @gcrauwels941 says:

Why they used those fasteners for the return line is a question. Did the engineers want to ensure you did not overtorque the banjo bolt?
Or was it to just to ensure it scared off the average wrench. Your choice of the parrot jaws is exactly where I would have gone first too.
On the old 2 cycle Detroits we would pressurize the fuel system to ensure the jumper lines (fuel in/out) didn't leak before putting the VC on. I was surprised to learn these LB7s were a 60/40 collaboration with Isuzu. Saw Isuzu on the Injector control module and had to investigate.

Great video Ray, it’s been a while since I’ve seen you work on a diesel (injectors).
And did hear in your voice a bit of frustration when not being able to break loose the bolts that hold fuel return lines. I’ve been there myself.

I have been an industrial mechanic for 20+ years. I have extracted a good many stripped hex head cap bolts by hammering in a slightly larger sized torx bit. Sometimes you sacrifice the bit, but it works most of the time.
