2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with 4.7 liter V8 Customer States Vehicle wanders while driving and steering feels loose. Let's check this out. So we've got yeah, they said it just feels kind of loose in the wheel. It's hard to control now.

I'm gonna move this steering wheel back and forth. We're going to look right here. We can see that the uh, the wheel itself is not moving. I mean there's a bunch of slop in all the linkage? Okay, Troy is going to help us out.

Reach on there. Reach in there please. and uh, and wiggle that wheel left and right until you feel the resistance. Don't let the steering wheel move.

Okay, so let's take a look. We've got the steering shaft coming down. right here. It's going into the steering gear.

see the collar moving on the gear gearbox is underneath, right down under there under the air box. If we look down I can't see. Let's crawl down below real quick. Keep doing that, sir.

Keep doing that. If we take a look down here, there's the arm coming out of the steering gear. See that Now we're not getting much motion out of it. It's moving a little bit, but not much.

Look right here. see that that is not okay. That's the main drag link that connects the steering gear over to the right front steering knuckle, then transfers energy and motion into the center link, which then goes over here to the left front steering knuckle. So we've got a major issue right here that's not okay, and there's a little bit of, actually, there's a lot of play going on.

uh, inside of that steering gear up there. So I'm going to recommend a steering gear and uh, this center link slash drag link to repair this. This is very unsafe. See that let's try to tighten that up and see if that's going to fix it or not.

Now One thing that bothers me is the head of this little bolt thing is sticking out and that bolt is a kind of bent. Somebody has made an error. A critical error. This is Not okay.

See if I can't just tighten this up real quick. Hey Troy can you come on back and uh and do that again? Just make sure we took the slop out of this. All right. It's been tightened down so much already that this bolt right here is bent.

It's not okay. Let me tighten it down some more. Okay, all right. do it again.

All right. Well, we took the slop out of that, but we didn't take the slop out of the gear. So I think we should replace the steering gear I Really don't like what's going on here. There's there's some wear that's happened there that's not right.

So I'm going to suggest we replace that as well, but primarily while we've already improved it. But I think primarily. Uh, we're gonna need to put a steering gear in this thing. However, it's the weekend.

This is an off-duty inspection I Happen to be here uh for for other Affairs like more Jeep things so uh that's uh, probably going to be a project for later on. I've got a I gotta let our guy know uh what it's going to cost and what it's going to take to fix that up. we'll see if they want to do stand by for a future video. Thanks for watching! See you guys later, Have a great day, have a great weekend.
End of transmission.

The best way to adjust the worm gear is to remove it from the vehicle IF it is not worn very bad. Go by the book instructions as you can tighten in up too much in the center and it CAN jam at the extreme travel turning right or left and it will NOT return to the center by itself. If it is too worn in the center, replace with a rebuilt or new steering gear. Don't buy a junk yard replacement. Your life can depend on this. Spend the money and stay alive.

Reminds me of the older Ford trucks that had the twin I beam front axle. I knew a very good front end and alignment guy that always said, If you could drive a ford pickup, you could trowel cement! Keep up with the good work Ray. I'm hopeful that Troy really watches and learns. It's really great that you can mentor and teach Troy to be a top notch technician with honesty and integrity.

Steering gear boxes used to have an adjustment to tighten the gears to reduce the slop. But that was back in the 1960's.

What a nice looking Jeep! My parents had one of these, 2001 dark green Laredo 4.7 bought used when I was 6 years old. Was a lovely car.

Sold it with 220,000 Kms on it after a year or so to a guy who was exporting it to Germany. It's lovely to see cars from my younger years still on the road!

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars boogerhead0 says:

Note to those swapping steering gearboxes… the four fasteners on WJ steering box are accessible under front wheel well.

Remove wheel, Remove wheel well liner, Remove Air Filter Box nuts from below, turning fasteners inside air box will get you nothing. Remove Air Filter Box. Remove washer bottle.

Remove steering coupler, Remove Pitman Arm.

Back in the 70s, I worked for a local Manatee Co police department. Besides law enforcement duties, I also did PM on the cars. I had a gripe for a similar problem. Inspection revealed that 3 of 4 bolts in the rag joint were gone and the 4th was missing the nut.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob Hudson says:

Many have commented that you can adjust the nut at the top of the steering box to take out the slack. That's true but the wear is in the centre position with absolutely minimal wear heading towards left and right lock. If adjusted to compensate for wear in the centre, when turned, the steering really tightens up (well beyond reasonable) on both locks. That wear problem can only be fixed on a higher mileage vehicle by replacing the steering head. Each of the steering tie rod ends (plus the idler arm – though this specific vehicle does not have one) also need to be checked. All steering components tend to wear out together, or at minimum, all needs to be checked thoroughly. Retired mechanic in Land Down Under.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars THEDRAGONBOOSTER8 says:

    That bolt could break..

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jeff803 says:

It might not be a factor but those steering boxes have an adjustment nut on the top to tighten or loosen the gear mesh.
If the gear is not worn, the amount of slop will be consistent lock to lock and you can adjust it to remove the free play. If the gear is warn, slop will go away one direction and get progressively worse going the other direction indicating asymmetric wear on the gear set in which case, it's junk.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William White says:

Those steering boxes have an adjustment that allows the slop to be tightened. In the old days with manual steering the guideline was 1 to 2" of play in the steering wheel. I once bought an old high mileage 59 Chevy Impala that had a half turn of play. I tightened the steering box adjustment all the way and got the play down to 2".

The old day steering gear boxes had an adjustment to take slack out of the worm gear to tighten up the steering tension . I miss the good old times .

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars R jD says:

The screw/nut combo on top of the steering box is designed to remove that slack. If you loosen the nut and then tighten the screw, you can adjust the play in the steering box play without replacing the entire box.

I know this is old school repairs rather than today's replace it motif but it works and it isn't dangerous. It comes from the day where you expected to repair something rather than just throw parts at something.

    You're welcome.
