Is it just me, or do Fords get more battery corrosion than they should?
The 6.2L also are real bad for the plug wires arcing out.
Who’s the daddy of battery maintenance !
Ahhh the fail to start, I've had that happen with my 150 before when I was doing some electrical work. Since it's now a purely computer and electronic sensor controlled system and not a mechanical on/off one, I think whats happening is that the flag in the computer for "I am in park or neutral" to permit it to start gets wiped when you wipe the codes, or sometimes when you are fiddling with plugging things back in, and some idiot made that flag only trip when putting it INTO park or neutral, not be an active check of what position the shifter is in when it comes online, so you have to go out and back in to park or neutral for the "start position ok" flag to tick on again. Thankfully newer models have changed to being a current state check and not a last input check.
Ethanol is a renewable resource, oil will run out eventually.
In Australia ethanol is made from the waste leftovers of sugar crops, nothing is grown just to produce fuel.
It's all about the Pickles
if you gonna rinse the battery with water anyway, you can just use hot water for the corrosion. it works very well and cheap. It rinses off everything, i mean you dont have to scrap as much as you did in this video.
No pickles? What kind of insane people do you work with?
After seeing the computer readout I am convinced that the fur-lined potty-warmer spark plug has gone to hell.
Why use chemicals to clean battery terminals? The best is to buj Baking Soda (BiCarbonate of Soda) put 1 tablespoon in 1 ltr warm water then pour over the terminals. INSTANT clean. Rinse with fresh water. Nothing better !!
..
Hot water dissolves that battery crud like magic
Scotty Kilmer went over the "won't run/start" problem… bus probes should never be left plugged in to the vehicle when it is off and you screw around with connections.
Wow thats one big ass land yacht!
What does ethanol have to do with this problem? Seems you would at least question the fuel blend during troubleshooting.
I was always taught the order in which you disconnect (neg first) and reconnect the battery (pos first). You dont seem to give a dam so i assume its unimportant as you are the best mechanic I know🙃🇬🇧
put corn squeezins back in a likker bottle where it belongs………the eco whackos will have us ALL walkin pretty soon
NOCO stands for no corrosion
Ethenol is higher octane so more power
So I need u to do me a flavor and try something. Re battery clean. Disconnect cables, mix good old arm and hammer with water. just pour mixture all over use parts cleaning brush. Then wire wheel. . Pour water all over, blow off. Before doing anything use multimeter form one post and drag the other lead across battery to see voltage drop. After cleaning chk again. No chemicals, doin for years
I never like engine with plastic intake or valves covers , it all Mercedes’ false Testing formula 1 with engine plastic everything 35 years ago , plus you dont deluded with water before you spray the battery , you be breathing acids powders and the rest of your buddy , plus fans circulating around the shop LOL !!!. Acids going to your lungs
A few months back before gas stations were authorized to use E15 my vehicle, 19 Civic SI was in perfect running order. Over the last few months I started seeing misfire codes captured in my cars computer and when I cold start, as it idols down a slight studding @ 1400 rpm. Figured it was spark plugs and did them and the coils. The misfire continues to this day. Went to the Honda dealership and the mechanic there said that they have had several SI owners complaing about a similar issue. The computer system is not set up for E15 and although it will adjust it takes time and causes it to misfire.
Also, the percentage added to gasoline does not equal the mileage percentage lost. 10% of 22 mpg is 2.2. but I lose more like 4 mpg. Ethanol really sucks. Just like water. Gatorade is better.
E15 or ECO 88, whatever they want to call it. Some gas stations actually just mix it in without saying, unless you can find the orange sticker that says E15 is 87 and 89. And if you want E10 you have to pay 91 prices. Most people probably don't know they're going to be hurting their fuel economy. Less BTUs means less mileage. I get pinging and detonation with E10 87. On straight 87 gasoline I don't. So they're not equal at all. The mileage lost for Flex fuel totally makes the fuel savings not worth it.
Foot not on brake while trying to start
It is a good thing that you do not work on BMW, because of the way you connected the battery, that fries modules.
Fords will also start shutting down Control Modules when voltages start getting low.
I experienced that on the passenger door handle/lock of my 2018 F150. It would no longer passively lock/unlock.
Dealer said I needed to pay $600 for a new painted door handle. I checked the battery voltage and charged the battery. Door handle worked fine after that. The battery was a little tired(4 years old) so I got the dealership to credit my $150 towards a new battery. These require a whole new level of troubleshooting.
You forgot to spray brake clean on it
This is what amazes me with people that buy E10, the money they "save" on the price at the pump you lose in mpg's!!
Ethanol contains 30% less energy and anyone that has built an E85 turbo engine knows that you need much bigger injectors, stronger fuel pump etc to make the same amont of power with E85 as with gasoline.
For drinking however, good 'ol ethanol does the trick all the time! ✋🥴…..🤣🤣🤣
I totally feel the difference and feel it so now I have to measure how much octane should I scientifically add to my tank
Hey Ray?
Just a quick thing, but you guys should have a shop vac for the stuff like the battery corrosion — spraying it around into the engine bay and your shop space seems like another problem waiting to surface?
Ethanol+humidity=trouble.
Not to doubt the mileage results of the commenters here but the math doesn't make sense.
With E85, you have 15% ethanol, if ethanol has 25% less energy than gasoline then you should loose 15 * 25 /100% or 3.75% of your mpg. I can't understand how anyone could get 20 – 30% worse mileage using E85.
Does disconnecting the battery without using one of those things in the computer port that keeps it charged screw up the idle???
if still within warranty peeriod, why didnt customer take it to ford for warranty repair?
Interesting note about "FLEXFUEL" engines.
GM won a court case when an engine was damaged by 85 ethanol fuel in a flexfuel car. GM argued that the car can run E85 now and then, but not all the time without damage. The conservative judge agreed.
Flexfuel engines will die if run on E85 all the time!
Can you find non ethanol gasoline that isn't premium anymore?
No one ever claimed that higher-ethanol fuel was the be-all and end-all of fuels, nor did any one ever claim that it is the right fuel for every vehicle.
Is it bad that could smell the corrosion dust when you cleaned the + cable end?
My guestimation on the No-start is that when cables were disconnected the positive contacted the body and cleared the BCM which had to relearn functions and perhaps transponder programming glitch for same. Some vehicle models you just don't want to let that happen but in this case it did seem very bizarre 🤔
When your motor management can't figure out what kind of fuel you are using then yes you are burning more fuel than needed. This goes for all older cars. Modern cars can adjust a little but don't run an adaptation each time you fill up to adjust all the parameters. In general, one aspect is better performance but the engine runs at a higher temperature (similar to liquid petroleum gas ) that most engines don't like. To use ethanol as a substitute for MTBE is smart because MTBE is highly toxic. It is always a trade-off like better for the environment and higher usage but that depends mostly on how the car industry can and will adjust. With a large inventory of old cars, it can be questionable
Ita a bad practice to keep blowing acid contaminated battery build up over the car , it will eat into everything. A vacuum cleaner is a much better option.
I'm glad I have quite a few gas stations near me that sell non ethnohal gasoline yes its more expensive but with non ethnohal gasoline my 06 charger with the 5.7 gets around 19-20 mpg city and with mid grade ethnohal gasoline I get around 15-18 city so yah I totally agree.
just take the Ethanol out of the gas
The gov isnt stupid… it passed a law to enrich oil companies even more while the citizens suffer. The lied and told the people it was to help them… like always.
Ethanol. For corn growers, by corn growers. It ruins engines.
I can remember talking to my wife when the whole idea of switching to alcohol based fuels was being sold as the thing of the future and telling her people would really be surprised and upset about the fuel economy because as a general rule of thumb for setting up an alcohol fuel system you would start around 30% richer and go up from there, and to lean on alcohol doesn't tend to warn you with a typical knock or ping but it will melt pistons easier than not. And I had to ask her what she would think about a heavy traffic situation in a city with hundreds of idling cars when she's been in the garage with the doors open when we were running the super modified and that was just one engine. I also used the example that when we were playing with using alcohol as fuel in a two stroke single cylinder motorcycle that we went from a .050 (fifty thousandths) size main jet all the way to a 9/32nds to get the engine to run right and stay cool and responsive, and the pilot jet we had to use for the low end mid range on alcohol wouldn't start it without pushing on gasoline and would flood the thing out if you got below 3,000 rpm. Yep sounds like it would be a perfect fuel…….for anything except public use.😛
Out of my own curiosity is there a reason you don't use the old 9 volt battery with a power outlet adapter(cigarette lighter plug) for retaining customer set memories held in the vehicle memory like radio, clock, mirror, power seat, so those will still be in the settings for the owner?
Thanks for your posts, it gives me some mental workouts to see how my diagnostics compare with your thoughts. And to think that I sure am glad I don't have to use all the electronics that cars use now. I have worked at about every type of automotive industry job from auto body repair and paint, muffler shop, upholstery shop, detail shop, general service manager for a dealer, chassis set up and engine work for race cars, build racing engines for motorcycles, and my own years of shade tree work in high school because I worked cheap enough to afford, and now at 72 years of age I can tell my grandson I've worked on everything from a Model T, to a 2018 Kia DOHC V-6.
Using flex fuel in a vehicle not designed to run flex fuel is a bad idea.
Thanks Democrats.
Thanks for polluting ground water with MTBE also.
