the non-official way to separate armored cable: fold it in half, then rotate either side of the break opposite directions, until you have enough space to cut the metal strip neatly. trim back, and use the plastic anti-short protectors.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars livingdeadbtu says:

    Ok, now my REEEEEEEEEEE
Need to get a cord with the ground pin! I know it, you know it… just saying. Ground is important when angry pixies go in the wrong places. Now for the wiring Job….not bad for a first stab. BX or metalclad (MC) or armored cable (ac) — all the same stuff— is notoriously hard to work with even for those in the know. Nicked wires , crushed armor, all kinds of things can go south. 1. The clamps you were using were the wrong kind. Those were for Romex. You can tell by the shape of the clamping part. Bx are a bit more rounded. (See lowes 45176) You can use them, they work, but they are not correct. Don't clamp those too hard or let an inspector see them.
    2. You need the little red anti short bushings ….plastic ends(lowes 5034202). These are not required but are a MUST. Especially on a trailer. Moving and vibrating stuff cuts wires. They go into the end of the cable and protect it from that nasty sharp edge of the armor. Use them… redo those ends…. they WILL eventually rub into the wires.
I prefer the snap in fittings over the clamps because clamping MC may cause shorts. (Home depot 723125).
So add the bushings and clean up those sharp ends!!! Before you pull that trailer around too much.
Also, those lights plug together in a chain. I would suspect unplugging at the first light not on.
    Reeeeeee out
Edit: both box stores carry this stuff. I just used Lowes or HD part numbers as examples by which was easier to find on their web sites.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chuck WA7JOS says:

Besides missing the bushing, that's the wrong clamp for armored cable.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marty H says:

I would suggest a 12 or 10 GA extension cord and 15 Amp breakers. I also think you need that 3rd prong on your extension cord and agree that you need to bond the box to the trailer chassis and box. Also suggest GFI breakers as well.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dean Seller says:

that's more than I would have done.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Casmige says:

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GeekMoto13 says:

for a temp setup, back feeding through a breaker is acceptable as long as you don't pull more than say 15 amps total, you should be fine

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars livingdeadbtu says:

2 ways to cut it. Bend it till it breaks and cut with sheet metal snips…. old school. But there is a better way. Be right back…
Bx armored cable cutter. Home depot has a Klien 953151 and Lowes has Ideal 20582. It is a little crank thing with a tiny saw blade. Soooooo cool. Awesome tool. Once you use it you won't go back

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GeekMoto13 says:

man for a first time working with armored cable, you did ok, that stuff is a pain to deal with

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars imark7777777 says:

There's no easy way to strip the metal off unless you get the fancy tool. There's a little plastic thingy that's red that goes in that protects the wiring. That's a different method most the ways I know involves snipping it on the ridge.
Not bad and you're right about reversed Dingley bits I've had a few occasions where I've almost got poked in the eye, bend them out of the way while you're working.
You should always and it's good practice separate your lights and outlets just in case you were the trip the breaker you're not in the dark as well.
Backfeeding a temporary supply through a breaker during installation and for testing is quite common "most" breakers allow this. Although you have to be super extra careful not to backfeed or have multiple feeds you only really want one incoming line so when you turn the main breaker off everything's off. I say that because apparently it's common to find houses with circuits that loop back into other circuits and somehow they got lucky that they weren't across two phases….
Hey not bad you manage to get all the strands in! You might be able to branch out.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jonathan Turner says:

The more appropriate thing is to just make a dead man cord that has a male plug on both ends, then use that outlet to back feed into the breaker box, best of all no real medication to the breaker box and someone yanking on cord doesn't cause issue there.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars stephen vale says:

Unless i am confused, is the breaker box actually now mounted behind the tool cabinet, where you will never be able to access it?
Also that conduit is going to chew through those wires without a plastic bushing to shield them from the cut edges.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Sheets says:

WOW I didn’t think you were a sketchy kinda guy

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars LordStraightBanana says:

Nice trailer, looking forward to seeing it progress.

One safety issue – you need to get an earth installed between the house socket and the trailer.
The trailer is insulated from earth by the tyres. If you get any sort of live-earth fault in there, the metalwork could all sit live at mains voltage.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don Colbert says:

Exactly. You can do all sorts of videos. Now how about a BBQ??? Or do you make hamburgers into hocky pucks?

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars cengeb says:

If that white outlet is a 20a duplex near the blue cabinet and it's fed from 15A breaker, it's a violation. can't have 20a duplex on a 15A breaker…yet you can have a 15A DUPLEX on a 20a breaker….sounds strange, but there is a NEC reason why….

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank Tedeschi says:

I did not get to read any other comments but please tell me even tho you used a 30 amp receptacle you have it protected by a 20 amp breaker in the house due to the use of the 12/3 wire you ran.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Leach says:

A circuit breaker doesn't care about the direction of electron flow, it isn't ideal but it's perfectly alright to backfeed a breaker and said circuit breaker will still current protect at what it is rated for.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dave spencer says:

Dude, you really need bushes on entries and earth leakage breaker, and earth bonds

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Travis says:

Back-feeding through a breaker is fine, that's basically what a generator feed on a house is. You don't necessarily need it for a panel that's going to be plugged in, but doesn't hurt to have it. Having separate breakers is good, don't want your lights going out if your outlets get a short, vice-versa. The frame of the trailer should be grounded to the box in case something live touches it. You did good using solid core wire, most diy'ers go for the stranded stuff which is meant for hooking up 1 appliance, not an entire circuit. It needs plastic bushings in the shielding through so the wires don't chaff. Typically you want to leave the wires with a little extra looped in the box for future repairs or additions. Your cord should be 10 gauge not 12, that won't handle 30 amps.

Yes hacksaw or rotary cutter for metal clad cable yes bushing should be used along with the correct connector for the panel. But hey you did it good job you got it done oh yes easier to mount the connector to the panel first and snake the cable through

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Hedgecock says:

When you put the white right into a regular lug on the bar I had a feeling you were going to back feed through the breaker. lol
    Super Scetchery!
Good quick temp solution, just fine for lights and cordless charging. you still do have some overload protection, House breaker to outlet you plug ex cord into will trip if you put too much load on it. No ground is a little scary though

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Jankiewicz says:

Ray, please make sure you run a bonding wire from panel ground to the trailer frame. We don`t need you getting zapped. I spent 10 years commercially in the trade, That orange extension cord power feed is no bueno my friend. 1. Major code infraction. Glad you used the heavier black cord, add a single outlet on the outside of the trailer wired to the lugs in the panel to power it. You have the 12-3 heavy cord, just add a good plug to both ends, trailer side use a locking plug and outlet(twist to lock). Brass colored screws on outlets and plugs are ALWAYS the hot side(black). Silver is neutral(white). When running an outlet circuit, at the box with 2 sets of wires, twist the black together slightly, add a short(6in.)black to them, twist, trim and add a red wire nut. Repeat for the white. That`s called a pigtail. If at any time an outlet has an issue wired this way, it`s THAT outlet that is bad and wont take down the entire circuit..As for the armored cable, a hacksaw will cut it in a pinch, just bend the cable without separating it and carefully cut one ring straight with the length. Twist to separate. Always use the red plastic bushings slid in between wire and armor to keep the armor from shorting out the circuit. Stay safe Ray, we like having you around, not lit up like a Christmas tree.

  95. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Foogod says:

I'm not an electrician, but a couple of things I noticed based on my own knowledge/experience:

    1) 12/3 cable is really only recommended for 20A up to about 100 feet total run. The cable itself is at the max end of that, so depending on how long a run (and what kind of wire) you've got from your main house panel out to that RV hookup point, you might end up seeing too much of a voltage drop over the full run by the time it gets to your trailer (which could result in some flakiness with certain types of devices if you plug them in). It's not guaranteed to be an issue, but something to watch out for.
    2) Also, if you've got multiple 20A breakers in the box, you could end up pulling more than 20A total over that supply cable. I'm not sure what kind of breaker you've got on the supply side, but if it's a 30A breaker you could end up overloading the supply cable substantially if you're not careful (this probably isn't an issue with just a single outlet circuit and the lights, but if you decide to install multiple outlets on separate breakers, etc, it's something to be careful of).
    3) As others have noted, you really should have some protective bushings for the jagged ends of those armored cables.

As a side-note, it doesn't matter for this setup anymore, but if you are doing something like this without a ground wire running back to the supply (like in your temporary extension cord setup) then you should connect the ground and neutral together (but do not do this if your ground is connected to the "upstream" supply ground). This ensures that a fault to ground somewhere in your trailer will actually trip the breaker, instead of just making all the "grounds" live (and dangerous). Obviously, it's better to have a real ground going back to the supply if you can, though.

  100. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gunhaver says:

I highly recommend getting a nice pair of Irwin linesman pliers. there is a good chance you have an old rusty pair as a lot of people have them from a set and never really use them. The nose is flat like a hammer when they are closed, and you can use that flat end to hammer the knockouts so they turn like a fly valve, then you grab on with the pliers and work them until they snap off from metal fatigue. i have a set of linesmen pliers of different sizes, but my big Irwin ones i tend to use the most.

in my work i never had to tango with conduit, but i have seen the old timers do it, and there is some kind of magical trick that you can do with just your hands that not only separates the conduit, it also snaps the two halves apart. i never could do it with just my hands, but you can look up "how to strip conduit" on youtube and find someone doing it with just their hands and bending it around.

at the end of the day though, it doesn't really matter how you knocked out the knockouts or how you stripped the conduit, just that you got it done and that you installed the strain relief for the conduit. using linesmen pliers is just an easier way than using a hammer and chisel. as long as you don't bung up the remaining hole, its all good
