Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as we have a look at this 2007 Ford Freestyle that came with a customer complaint of no speedometer, vehicle will not shift, traction light on and ABS light on. It didn't take long to find the vehicle had a code U1900 CAN BUS FAULT stored in several modules. We also find that there is a "no com" with the ABS module and the Rear Differential Module. Let's see where this leads. -Enjoy!

It's interesting but not exciting…I like your troubleshooting expertise. it's like going to school for me. Even though you go through all the possibilities, we all know that after a while you keep seeing the same faults on a perticular platform. One I will emphasize from past experience, the influx of crapola inferior parts out there. Keep up the great videos. I don't envy the salt corroded candidates.

Having owned an 07 Freestyle the issues are myriad the greatest of which is the crap CVT tranny that Ford never properly supported. Hell, I could NEVER get a dealer to do a tranny service, no one wanted to touch the thing.

I have had a fuse that looked open but tested OK with a multimeter. Still, it didn't look good so I stuck in a good fuse and fixed the problem. It must have had enough of a connection for the meter but could not carry the circuit current.

cause abs codes on the freestyle are stored in the cluster, along with traction control codes, and the DEM module

I know this is an older vid and you may already been told this but here goes. Fuses are meant for short circuit protection (they can be time delayed for loads like solenoids) and breakers are meant for overload protection. Technically not much of a difference since both are high current but the difference is the time before protection is occurs.

I love how my first initial thought on Ford Freestyle wasn't that Freestyle was the model, but rather what the owner was doing because there was no speedometer lol. Just freestyle it and go whatever speed seems right.

Positive battery terminal has a bad case of the crusties.???

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ryan says:

I find it easier to do a continuity test on fuses rather than relying on a visual inspection.

I worked with one of the software engineers that wrote the software for that module. He still to this day drives one of those ford freepiles. Years later they put a similar active front diff in the Focus RS and put module in almost the same spot in the front. I had to help wire it full of thermocouples to do a few temp study road tests. I never have thought that was a great location for a module…especially if your running wires on the underside and not through the cabin and down.

What test light do you use

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gort Newton says:

Pro-tip: Put a nail across the fuse holder. Smoke reveals the problem very fast.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tony garcia says:

Can I be your solenoid dussault could be corroded because the fuse blew so slowly it took a while for it to amp upbut without doing duck gnosis you don't know if it's in the harness or the relay or the actual motor in the diff usually they're activated electronically I don't know how their primary or secondary winding but there's something going on there
