I hate dentist's !!
Honestly it’s a fail if you didn’t do the head studs, the motor will be coming back out soon
Hey Ray loving your shows I've watched you since the main stealer days, but I'm really curious to know are you still in touch with Peeterrrrrr ???
I hope the repair is successful long term and that car never comes back to your shop. It was difficult to watch you take a steel dremel bit to the aluminum oil pan. Some good alternatives have been mentioned in the comments. I know well the labor involved to clean up an RTV mess. I wouldn't want to be the next tech to deal with what you re-created on that oil pan. Considering the vehicle, it may be laughable, but cheaper & more reliable, to suggest a LS swap!
Hey Rey, I’ve sealed hundreds of oil pans not removing the RTV in the valley of oil pans. I’ve had zero comebacks. I’m just wondering why you’re being so thorough?
Should have made them buy a new oil pan as that sealant removal was painful
Glad I don't have a Northstar
We used to reseal the block halfs in the car by dropping the subframe. Ah, the old dealer days! 😜
Hope you don't regret not sealing it. They are a common leak. I never had the threads chime out of the block half, just the heads. Maybe I'm lucky.

The proper way to do it is to leave the gasket out and use the grey GM sealant. That was not shade tree, it was part of a bulletin.
Also, the lower bolts do not require replacement unless they break. The broken piece will usually spin out easily with a sharpened punch.
Wish you were near me, I totally would have helped you with that thing. Lol
feel sorry for the owner; watching sanding away perfectly straight factory surface, and additional dental procedure…😮
Good video ray thanks! Cant wait to hear it run again!
I wouldnt touch a northstar with a 10 long wrench.
WHY would you not RESEARCH what you're doing BEFORE you start? I don't understand HOW you don't know what you're opening up????
8 minutes was enough for me….
Thanks Ray
Rays choice and as long as he talked to his customer than can support it. If it had been me I would have encouraged the customer while in this deep do it all. But we don't know the story and its the call of customer and mechanic. But good job on what work you did.
I recently bought that Milwaukee Dremel-type tool. You can see what I noticed about it here, namely that it's too heavy for the sort of one handed use that these tools normally get.
Good lord this bill has to be at least 5k.
Regards AI (couple weeks back). AI is as good as data you use to train it. If data contains "complaint" and part or action used to fix it – it'll suggest this approach as well. If it gets access to car details and list of common issues, it'll know common issues. If it's trained to recognize tear, wear etc on wires, it'll detect and 'll show suspicious tear/wear in augmented glasses.
Great work as usual Ray! GodSpeed bro!
In the UK this is called BL Monday morning engine 😂
FFS.
In the UK you can buy silicone removal gunge or silicone eater. It comes in a tube much like silicone and you spread it over what you want to remove then leave it alone for an hour. It somehow eats into the silicone and returns it to a fresh like silicone state so it can be scraped or wiped away. May take a few attempts in that deep gasket groove however.
I saw nothing wrong with this repair. The RTV is extra insurance to prevent future leaks. Finding ways to save customers money is always worth it in the long run. A few hundred dollars in extra bolts and labor when not necessary is like stealing from someone. You can take advantage of someone now for short term gain, or you can help someone save and retain a long term customer. I choose the latter. Some people are just gonna be haters and a..holes regardless of what you do. You,ve got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything, so Ray, just keep doing what you do. No one is gonna agree with you 100% of the time because everyone see's things with different views, but at least you explain why you do the things you do and that is 100% respectable.
Please bring back the drama your earliest videos had. Swear, kick, scream all the good stuff. 😀
it's weird seeing ray using a dremel on the sealing surface (not knocking him at all as he's been doing this for years and would trust him myself), i'm interested as to why he'd use a dremel tool to clean it and not something less aggressive given metal on metal, sealing surface etc?
Again to be clear, i'm not knocking him just curious as a non mechanic (I work in IT)
The owner must be mad getting a northstar engine rebuilt, they are one of the worst engines ever made.
Seriously?
I got to seal my Honda pan lying on my back in the garage. Hondabond only gives you a few minutes to get the pan mated after you apply the sealant. Not fun.
If i were dumb enough to not research the car before buying it, and i was silly enough to do all this work, I'd find a northstar specialist who knew the whole job and had done many of them. But you don't keep cars like this, just no point. Esp when you don't do the miles. Just get an accord or Camry, our civic. Trouble free motoring, great resale.
😂
Definitivamente, este fue un caso de "Yaque.."
Interesting he talks down on people who use rtv and a gasket in previous videos, then does it himself
I know nothing about this work, but I know I’m glad I don’t own a car with a Northstar! 👌🏻
The knock is not for opting to not split the block to reseal. The knock is for not removing the oil pan baffle BEFORE spraying RTV all over. Is there a big chunk of it under the baffle? I guess we're fittin ta FAFO. 🤷♂️
I've resealed the oil pan on a Northstar engine before and never want to do it again
Wait, you didn’t do the head bolt repair…..REALLY..?
AlexO no one gives crap what you say. Now that you have made your announcement. Please shut the door on your way out. And go run your mouth someplace else
Should’ve pressure washed it before disassembling
I was wanting to see him go with 109 ft lbs.
I guess the previous guy went by the adage “the bigger the gob, the better the job.”
Thats about $2500 job
You know I don’t hear the grinding noise in background until you mention it. The clip you inserted made the grinding excoriating louder. Lol. Good work!
Don't take this wrong Ray, love your channel. However, the high speed munchkin voice drives me crazy. That and the high speed dremel and rotary disk are like fingernails on a chalkboard. You don't need to show us all of the details of totally cleaning sealant off in high speed. In your film editing, just show the beginning, fade to any highlights, then fade back to the end. Thanks
REEEEEE REEEE REEEEE… Haters gonna hate.. Loooong time subscriber here. Not a chance I'll unsub. You keep doing you.
Stop working on the floor you heathen, you've moved up in life.
thanks for the warning about loud noises. You can easily fix this in editing.
Ray you should leave out a bolt every time just to piss people off.
Are you SURE that this engine doesn't have a PCV issue? It seems to want to squeeze out oil at every joint and seal.
If this was a Volvo, I'd suggest you take a glove and put it over the oil fill neck and see if it inflates.
Is this under warranty?
That ain't gunna leak.
Somebody needs to take away the sealant from that guy that put that on.
This should prove that they don't make vehicles like they use to.
Working with aluminum parts = "SUPER SKETCHY"😂. I'm not a fan of them. Great job Ray.😮
Looks like it gets rubber gasket
Looks like this car has more leaks than my grandmother's gossip circle! 😂🚗💦
I have a question? Besides the one I just asked. I always thought that there was a tightening pattern for torquing oil pans?
To the haters WHOSE ONLY EXPERIENCE IS YOUTUBE COMMENTING. 🖕🖕
Their is a new tool out their called a shop manuals you can look up if the base come off as for silicone one must use denatured alcohol to clean mateing surfaces brake clean leaves a residue and silicone won't stick well and leak
Wire wheele on angle grinder much faster boss
OMG my molars
🖕 the know it all h8ers
Should be using hylomar to seal that toilet ,was developed to seal the toilet jaguar engines, only thing the would seal em for us at dealer
Ray i like your longer videos as a fellow wrench keep it up thanks GTO mike from MIchigan …. and get them tourches working lol!!
This engine looks like an absolute nightmare.
Want to do away with all this BS? I have ran the Chevy 350 over 200K miles with spark plug change, water pump change and still running well. We are going backward with engines.
Man. The vitriol of a lot of perfectionists who have all the time in the world and all the money to burn it with in here is pretty awesome.
You guys don't know what Ray talked about with his customer. I would suspect that he has had several conversations regarding 'do you want to pay for me to do the mid block seal or no?' and customer said 'no' as it's not leaking. 'I can fix the oil pan or get a new one, which will you pay for?' Go with the old one.
Remember, Ray is on the hook for every single thing he does and then he puts it on the YouTubes to boot. You don't think he's pretty aware of all the things?
Y'all're funny. Truly. Might need to run a shop and be a mechanic on the line (which Ray does and was for other shops, including a Chevy dealer back when, so he knows more than you, likely) and deal with all the ways customers, parts, and techniques don't mesh and you have to deal with it and MAKE IT WORK.
Which Ray seems to be doing just fine, you ask me.
Go Ray. Can't wait to see this thing done. The Car Wizard would be appalled you're even doing it at all, I'd bet. 😀
/I am a tad concerned with the whiz wheel sprinklings in the case, but I'm sure you're gonna give it an oil bath before first start, eh? nods affirmatively knowing that's the case
WOW @$20.00/bolt on that lower skirt, I also say NO unless you know for sure there is an oil leak, and we definitely dont want to rip out aluminum threads. Sometimes a line has to be drawn and just stick to know problems….
Ray's note to self: "Never open another automotive repair business within 25 miles of the nearest granite countertop-cutting business — EVER!"
This is one job I would not want to attempt it's not easy
hi ray
RAY…..!!- $7.99 silicone chem removal agent. Oh boy😢 Your shop your methods.
Ray you forgot to put in the other bolt
Dowsil DS-2025 Silicone Cleaning Solvent much easier for cured sealant if you're willing to wait a few hours.
I dont have to go to the dentist for 15 years now.
what brainiac ever thought those o-ring in channel gaskets was a good idea>? In time they always flatten out against the torque and start leaking.
I hope there is a part two.
Would that be …. Inch/pounds?… just saying.
good job Ray. My dad's mechanic was named Ray…..We called him father ray! The man did it all! (just like you). Just send it!
Is it possible, advisable or procedural to smoke test the crankcase ?
Thinking about all the places you could possibly get an oil leak could you under pressure introduce smoke into the engine prior to reinstallation to test all the gaskets ?
And at what pressure ?
And is air pressure the same as oil pressure ?
Just seems like a simple way to check on the work you did and didn’t do.
109 ft lbs – that's a MAN's oil pan.
Ray I've been doing petrol engines for 49 years, and you just did the perfect, what was required, job,
so to the haters I say you don't know 5hit.
Again Ray, google chevrolet LT-5 and this is the engine GM tried to cope and call it the northstar but build quality was no where close. The original LT-5 was designed by Lotus in the UK and made by Mercury Marine.
Good lord, you guys are really "REEEEEEE"-ing here in the comments today. Go get some more coffee or something, chill.
LOL 106 Ft. Lbs. on the pan Bolts🤣🤣🤣"You'll Break your Bolts off Kid"😂 On a more serious note I did notice when flipping the pan over during the install some water dripped out of it into the crankcase. Probably not more than 1/4 Oz. but it's there. Might consider a 15 minute run and flush once complete. I had anxiety seeing how deep the gasket groove was and all the sealant in it. The last guy definitely was not looking out for the next guy…….
Why such work on an 18 year old car that’s work woukd cost more than the car 😮
Thanks for keeping it to 35 min. Those 1 hr videos(while still good) became real time hogs that I couldn’t do on a regular basis. Great job Ray and don’t even try to respond to the haters…. Just block them, they just look for reactions.
I wonder if that’s the Northstar Engine that had the head bolt stretching problem. If it is, it might be smart to put head studs in it.
Don't listen to the Monday morning quarterbacks telling you what you should have done. You use what you've got.
Sounds like being at the dentist 😬 then car mechanics 😂
Awesome! Ray is turning out to be a very good Karen magnet. Never seen so many before and the reeee is louder than all the loud noises.😂
There are a lot of haters in the comments today.
Good thing there was no welding in this video, huh Ray?😜
Don’t know if you are just stressed out or on drugs but this is some shady work ! Very difficult to watch—unsubscribed.
