Thanks to Jesse for making the intro and graphic for us to enjoy!!!

We got a Ford Econ Oine Service van. It's got the 5.4 L Customer states that after the engine has reached operating temperature, once you shut it off, it'll have an extended long crank upon restart. So let's go ahead and shut this down. Engine's been running for about a half an hour.

We went and drove it around some put some miles on it. Got everything up to Temp We're going to let it sit for like a minute or two and then go try to do a restart and see what she does. Okay, 76 seconds later, let's see what this thing does on a restart. Oh, didn't do it.

trying again later. All right, it's been like 8 minutes or something. Let's try this again. Restarting.

There it is. That was it. right there. Perfect.

Perfect. I know what that is. It's got a check valve in the fuel pump that's draining back and the fuel lines are emptied out. Needs a fuel pump module uping? Z Hood Look who that guy is.

Hello everybody, good day to you and welcome back! Glad you guys are here I know I'm super glad to be here. We are uh going to return to this 5.4 L E350 Ford Van uh customer stated it had a long crank after a uh after a shutdown and we saw it do the long crank the other day. I'm going to see if it's going to do it on cold start here if I can get the key in beginning engine restarting sequence. Yeah no no, she fired right up.

but it did have that long crank earlier I suspect and we believe that the uh that the fuel pump is allowing the fuel fuel line and the fuel rail to drain back and empty out after a shutdown. Uh, on occasion it seems to be an intermittent issue. Uh, we just saw the thing start, but earlier. we also saw it crank and crank and crank and crank and crank and not start.

So what I have done is ordered a fuel pump module I didn't get just the pump I got the whole module with the sending unit and all the valves and connectors and plugs and everything else. You know, all the whatnots. So uh, what we're going to do here is get this thing into the building up on the big rack over there and we're going to pull the fuel tank out of this unit and uh, and swap that module out. I've got a new Uh Deli unit right over there on top of that engine crate.

see the blue box so that's the unit that's supposed to go in this van. Uh, let me go ahead and get her swung into the building here and uh, we'll go ahead and get started and oh, look, it's my lucky day. not a full tank of fuel. Uh, one of those Murphy's Law types of situations where anytime you've got to take a fuel tank out, they're always full.

I Don't know why, but that's just that's just how it goes. Time to navigate around the corner of Death right here, see if we're going to make it? Yeah, no problem. Hard over to the left. Captain Yep, we're good here.

checking the mirrors, checking the rack, checking for pedestrians. Good to go. Proceeding there we go. That's good.

Okay I think we're in good shape. Lift arm is in the appropriate positions. we're squared away on the rack. parking the AO Firing down.
Now, there's one thing about Vans when lifting them on the two poost lifts, you need to check the cargo area. Yeah, yeah, we're pretty heavy back here. Yeah, you got to. You need to check the cargo area and make sure or estimate rather, how much weight is in the back.

because a lot of times folks will set these things up on the rack with the driver position right here on the lift. and when they're full in the back, you now have a weight imbalance things. So the lift, the bolt lifts or the lifts or the bolts for the lift words: uh, will end up having to, uh, support that leveraging action that tries to pull these things out of the ground and make them fall over, so it's best to nose them forward just a little bit in order to make a a better balance lift. In other words, you need to know what you're doing so you don't die.

Okay, walk them over in the back. I've got to make some room here so we can, uh or make sure that there's room to get the fuel tank out. So I can't have these lift posts encroaching on the tank. Hey Dave Will you help me out? Dude? Yep.

I Need to get this corner set up just right? Will you go? and uh, bump the lift up for me? I've got to pull a cable out of the way to make clearance for the foot ready. Hang on a second. Move this over All right? Go ahead and send it up. Uh, a little bit more, little bit more, little bit more and a little bit more.

All right. Good to go. Thank you sir! Check all the rest of the Live points and we're out of here. All right.

Green Subscribe button van moving on up. So far so good, right? Okay, we're going to get this all the way up to the top, Set up some braces on the rear bumper so the thing can't fall over and then we'll dig this tank out. Yeah, that's way up there isn't It barely cleared my lights. uh do I tempt bait and go up one more.

Yeah. Okay, now we'll set her down on the locks. We don't need this thing settling or moving around there. We go on both locks.

Good to go. So what I'll do is grab uh one of these single post jack stand units here. We'll put this under the rear bumper and that'll keep this thing from moving around. So right here under the trailer hitch, we'll tighten it down, get a little bit of pressure on it.

Good to go. She is secure All right. Okay, so down here on the fuel tank side, we've got one strap and another strap that holds the tank on. but those that's pretty customatic I've got to take those off.

Uh I Ended up actually ordering replacement straps just in case this is all rusted together and I have to chop it off with a saw and I think I may have to do that. so let's see if there's any other obstructions or obstacles in our way here. New fuel filter I Think we're We're pretty good here. What's this? It's a missing Rando bolt.

Look at that that was chopped off once. okay, recovered. Okie Does we have the transmission jack in position on the tank here? So I've got the arms spread out as much as possible to distribute the load and then these little guys right here. those are going to stick up and straddle the tank that way.
It can't walk left or right so this thing seems to be pretty secure. Let's go ahead and get these straps removed or uh, cut off for whatever I got to do here and then uh, we'll lower this tank down. Stop it. Good old neutral drop with the A Le the ret.

Okay, now we got to go back. and uh, do the hard one. That's the one. It's back here behind all these lines and whatnot.

Yeah, she's in there. that's the stud. I think I can saw all blade at right through here though. no problem.

stick this right on in there. and the super kind of tight as squeez this area. but I think I can I better be able to get to it I don't want to do this the harder than necessary way. Want to do this the easiest possible imaginary way.

That's why I ordered fuel tank straps it doesn't reach. Let me try it the other way here. Come here. Yeah, there we go.

We got it. You lose. I Win! Okay, so I I really don't think I'm going to be fortunate to get uh, that nut off in the same fashion. but I'm going to try.

Let's just see if I can get this to. Break Free with this ratchet here I know it's a tight squeed you can't see but is what it is. That was great and highly effective. There's our nut all right.

So now pull these straps out of here. I've got new ones so it's okay to chop those to. Pieces there's the new ones. So what we do is C these guys out, give it a rotate, see how that worked, Got a slot in the frame, you turn it, pull the thing out, throw it the junk pile.

There we go. I'm recycling next one back here. there we go up goodbye. So we may now begin to lower this uh, fuel tank down.

So what I'll do is man the lever with my toe, give it some down and we're already uh, getting hung up supported again. Okay so now what needs to happen is we have to start to disconnect all the plumbing on the tank and looks like we're going to start here with the uh, filler neck hose and in here. We've got some lines, but I'm not sure if I can reach them just yet. so I may lower this down past the frame in order to get those uh, fuel lines disconnected.

Okie does 8 mm wrench on our uh clamp here? Okay, did come free so that's all rusted in. My guy said this was a Northern car and I I mean it's got some patina to it, but it's really not that bad. Definitely seen worse. It must have made it to Florida before its expiration date.

Oh no, there's already fuel here. We're going to get some spillage action. I'm going to let the tank down a little bit further. just kind of let it drop down and gravity can do its thing.

Come off a there please. we just keep wiggling it. There's another vent line on the other side of this one. We going to spill bunch of fuel.
No, we're good. Okay, tuck that thing over if it'll stay and it won't And then we've got uh, one more, one more vent down here. There she is I don't know why, but the uh, the clamps on or the the drive gears on such clamps always tend to point away from the most convenient way to access them like these ones. Point down and I don't understand who did that I meant to do that.

Okay, there's our vent tube and that's disconnected. Let's try to lower the tank a little bit further further. see what she does. Okay, it's starting to move down down.

Okay. I'm taking going to look at my lines up there to make sure nobody's getting pulled on and yanked out and torn off and damaged and stuff happens. So far we're good. I think and I thought wrong look at here.

There's an electrical connector for the pump running down and that's getting us uh, very very stuck. I need to disconnect that. There we go. Dirty in here.

How about that? So nasty. Okay coming down again I Spotted that through here and I had seen that convolute that wire uh looming right there that bit of business and I knew it went somewhere. but I couldn't see. So I went back up for a closer look and I revealed the thing that could ruin this job.

There's another one all the way in the back. It's like a evap pose of some sort. Yeah, we need to go back there and disconnect that one as well. Okay, what do we got going on here with this other one? Let's see.

Okay, no big deal, just an EVAP or a vent hose or something. We'll disconnect it right here at that clamp. That should be good. Okay, pliers coming in.

I do have a whole set of uh, post clamp pliers, but these were closer and there's relatively uh, some decent access here. so figure I can get away with it. plus I need the dle noses to wiggle this spongy hose off of here and I'm tearing it. That's cute.

Yeah, I tore it already so noig deal. Tear it some more and cut it off there. Okay, now we've got a couple connections up front. Let's move around and get those guys disconnected and then our Tank's ready to come on down.

Okay, got to squeeze in through here and get all the way back over here. My face is on the fuel tank. can't even see the other side of this clamp. All please.

Now this is hard to do left-handed at this weird goofy angle. By the way, I'm trying I'm trying so hard. think I've got it. Wiggle wiggle wiggle here.

We go there. Beautiful. Okay, so those are the vent lines. you need to bring it down a little farther if I can and gain some access to the Uh pressure and return line for the tank.

There we go. Okay, coming in with a pocket screwdriver here. there are some uh, little safety retainers on the fuel lines here. need to un loosen those.

Set those aside so it's going to be kind of tough to see from the back side. but we've got to insert a special tool into these fuel lines in order to release them. So this tool is going to slide over the hard line right there, wiggle it in and then we can pull the line off. There we go.
The reason being? you see those little fingers inside of there, those little tangs? Those tangs engage this uh flare right here on the line and that's what holds the fuel line in position for the hose. And of course they're different sizes. so the tool has both sizes. Small, one big one.

and these are these. Be kind of fun, especially when they get all rusty inside or they get filled full of dirt. There we go See, there should have been some pressure there behind this one and there was not. So that tells me that this system is losing its prime again most likely causes a uh, a faulty pump in the tank.

Uh, it's possible you get something like a a bleeding down injector, but without any uh, driveability concerns. I Wouldn't think that the injector was the issue or an injector. rather got one more connector here. Let see, yeah, that one's on there.

Pretty good. It's full of dirt. Come off of there, you stupid thing. There we go.

Connector removed and I think that's everything attaching this fuel tank. Let's hit the button again. Go ahead and let her down down to a manageable working height. Okay, let's get this thing.

uh, removed and disconnected and whatnot and see what's going on inside of the tank. Nope. Pocket screwdriver for the wind? There she comes there. There's our pump module.

Got the pickup sock down here. There's our float and our float operates this little sensor right here which changes the resistance value on a circuit and that is how your fuel gauge knows whether you have a full tank or an empty tank. like. so.

Okay, let's go. Uh, head over to the bench. We'll unbox that other module and uh, make sure that that is the correct one to replace this one. Okie Do Old pump module.

new pump module coming in. got an inlet and an outlet on uh, both units. Let's check the connectors. Sometimes you've got to cut these connectors off and replace them with a an updated connector.

That one looks good. Yep, that's good. That's good. Let see what else is good.

The pickup sock looks good. The pump module looks good. The float level sensor looks good Dimensions Look good. I'd say this unit looks good? it's going to work.

Let's go and bolt it in and get the tank back together now. same way it came out. We just kind of fit that sock in. Give some clearance for the float dropper down in there.

there. We will line up our bolt holes like so of course make sure that the Uh Outlet lines are facing the right direction. Uh, some of these you cannot clock them in the wrong direction, but some of them you can and I believe this one could be clocked in the wrong direction and that would be bad. You hook the thing up and then the fuel lines are pointed over there towards the drive shaft.
Uh, at which point you have to take it apart and do it again. It's never okay. Rad, there we go. Two more to go.

Very nice. Okay, let's get these guys torqued down to the correct amount of click. There we go. All right now.

let's raise this thing back up and get it back into its home in the frame rail here. fuel tank moving back up. Let's keep giving it some some pumps here. Going to lift this thing right up into its home now.

I'll need to guide these hoses in so we'll just fold them back a little bit. The hose on the back that I poked a hole in trying to remove it I've already gone ahead and cut the end of that off way I Can just slide it back together. Easy peasy, No problem There we go. Let's plug in that uh sensor while we're here.

We can go ahead and plug in the fuel pump, snap that back together and keep running her back up. Uhoh, we're running into something. Oh, running into the lift off arm there. By the way, this, uh, this Jack is remarkably stable the way it's set up so I elected to not uh, put straps on it I Know that will displease some of you, but I I assure you it is safe and there will be no problem here.

There we go. Okay, that's all in line. So now we have the right position. Let's pull the plugs off of the fuel lines here.

I Can't reach that other one. There we go. Okay, grab the lines. Uh, which one's the bigger one? The blue one's the bigger one.

Snap that one in having Tech here. I Can't get the uh, this other little clamp thing on here. It doesn't want to go there. Oh, that was easy.

Okay, got it. Clamps on, no problem. That was a lot of difficulty for not very much reason. No problem though.

Okay, let's get the tank mostly all the way back up. We got one more hose right off here to the left. let's get that guy in, will you on and a little bit of hose clamp plier action. business going here.

Slide that guy on right there. That's good and we'll grab the one in the back real quick. like I Think we're ready to run this tank up the rest of the way. As long as the uh, the filler hose is going to come through here, we reach in, you can see the vent hose right there.

Filler hose should be right next to it, which it's it's up there. Yeah, we need to go up a little higher. We'll send it all the way into its home. position here.

Okay, tank is in. Let's see where those hoses went to. There's one. and there's the bent hose a little bit higher.

Almost there. Good. So we'll take these guys and get them back in position here. Down there, there we go.

that one's in its position. Let's get the clamps together. Okay, fill our necks on. So once upon a time I put a tank in a like a Tahoe or a suburban and I forgot the fill our neck hose.
The customer immediately left to go get fuel after. I put the fuel tank back in and he pumped like 30 gallons of gasoline onto the ground. That was an embarrassing service call. but when you make a mistake like that, you got to go fix it like immediately.

Which just how it is. Anyway, those guys are attached. Let's get the new straps in position and bolt this tank back up to the bottom of the truck. All righty.

So here's our new straps. They are rust free. They came with new nuts which is good. CU I Chopped the old nuts off.

So all we need to do let take these straps, stick them in those slots, give them a Twist and we'll wrap them around, plug them in, both them down. Then what I've got to do is start this engine, let everything come up to operating temperature, and uh, at that point we can shut her down and try a hot restart and see what it does. There we go. put that up there, run that up through the hole here, through the hole in the frame, and then I've got to find the hole up here at the top of the frame and then get this Rod through it.

Aha there it is. Got that one through. Get a nut on there so it doesn't fall out. Let's one.

Let's go around the back and grab the other side. I'm poking at it, see what it does. A there it is. Got it.

Okay nut coming in? Excellent. Now due to the fact that these studs are rather lengthy and there's no space here, I'm probably just going to have to tighten these manually. No big deal because there's not a boatload of rust on them which is cool and I believe those are 17 mm nut everything sing up in position. Okay.

feels good. Go around to the front and weght that one up next. This one's a definitely going to be easier because I have left things in the way they're going to be in the way You Okay, Okay, so let's get out of here. We need to go ahead and lower the Jack again.

just on the flip pedal down there. Let the Jack go. It's going to release the fuel tank, put our little adjusters back where they go, let those fall down good, and now we can park the trans jack and we're going to let this van down. Fire it up.

Now normally when you put a fuel fuel tank or fuel pump in, uh, what you want to do is just key it on a few times. That way the pump can start up with the initial key on event and it can prime the line I think I'm just going to go ahead and crank it just to show uh, what a long crank is going to sound like and once it starts we'll shut it off. We'll start it again and then it'll start normally. Then we're going to go outside and park it, let it come up to Temp Then we'll shut her down again.

and then we're going to see if this thing does the long crank symptom that we saw in the very beginning. So let's get this thing off the locks green subscribe button one more time. Moving on up. Okay, we're off the locks lock release and Van Slowly coming down very slowly now.
You' got to watch the locks on both sides to make sure they fully disengage. So meaning you watch both lift arms and if one stops and gets hung up, you have to stop immediately. Once we start moving, we can go a little faster. Ground contact.

Okay, let's go inside. grab the key. I'm a little dirty so I'm not going to touch it. Beginning engine starting.

Long crank sequence now. Wow, that was fast. It didn't even long crank. Okay, good fuel pump.

Anyway, we check the leaks. There's no fuel dumping out of the thing. We know the vent is hooked up. We know that the sensors are hooked up.

We know both of the lines are hooked up. all the clamps are hooked up. Let's clear the rack and back this thing out for a moment. Lauren Are you here coming? Come here.

I Got to force you to be in a video. Like that guy said. okay here. now you're forced to be in a video.

Great Can I record you now I'm sure if you want I don't know what you're going to record me doing that. Uh, lift doing the lift. Um I'm undoing the lift, undoing the lift. it's coming down I the bottom of the look.

look at that there. fixed it. Hey I don't know what you did, but you havep I didn't even touch you. e wait wait wait wait Come here.

Come here, come here, watch. Simba it's great. Look at your nose. my snaz.

okay uh. fun game's over with Let's uh, let's get this thing backed outside and parked real quickly. like and uh, then we'll give it a half hour or so. I'm going to drive it while we're out and uh, well.

I'm going to drive it, Park it, and then we'll come back after about 30 minutes and do a uh, a hot restart. actually I forgot, let's do a cold restart. Fired right up. Beautiful.

This is good. It's what we want to see anyway. Backing out the auto HKS For safety even though no one's here. Lauren's in the office, but you never know.

People sneak in. they walk right up on you, checking the mirrors, checking the walls, checking the doors, checking the quarters, Everything's checked. Very good. y My dude in this car is just like hanging out.

burning one down, just in traffic. just doesn't care. just smoking left-handed cigarettes I can smell it. Okay, let's make sure it's got good power and all that stuff.

Wide open throttle, slowly, just don't go straight to the floor. it'll downshift a lot. Power Band Feels good. Hello shop bye shop.

Okay, this thing runs and drives correctly. Engine feels good, it's running strong. Let's take it back to the shop and uh, try that hot restart. So what we'll do is recreate exactly what the owner stated that it does.

Uh, we drive D it. Once you shut it down for you know, 5 10 minutes or whatever, you go back to it, the hot restart will not. uh, it'll be a long crank. it'll just be like and then it'll start.
So uh, we want to try the best we can to recreate that symptom. Well, better said, we want to recreate the conditions in which that symptom occurred and then verify that that symptom is no longer present. That's what we're looking for here. All righty.

we're going to pull it in on the flat stall outside right here front of this hanging Cadillac engine and we'll let it. Uh, we'll shut it down, let it sit for 10 minutes and we'll come back and try the restart powering down Okie does 10minute restart. It's been x amount of time, probably 10 minutes or so. Let's climb back in here and see what she does.

So it's either going to start quickly like it's supposed to or it's going to crank and crank and crank And crank and crank and crank. and then start. See what happens? Beautiful. Full.

perfect restart. Let's just try it one more time. Fired right up. Okay, let's shut it down.

Give it one more 10-minute restart and see what she does. One more restart. one more time just to see what she's going to do. Beginning engine starching sequence again.

fired right up. Beautiful! Okay I Believe that's a success guys thring down I Do not believe there's any more to offer on this particular van at this particular time. I Do have to do an old change on it, but we're not going to make a video about that. So having said all that guys as always like to thank you for watching this video.

Certainly hope you enjoyed this video. Uh, let me know what you think about this uh process in the video description down below. Do not forget to tap that like button while down there and most importantly have your shouts! A great day See you guys later in video in advance in of long crank in transmission.

A easy fix to a simple problem. I only wish that the manufacturers would find another way to fit the fuelpumps so it would be easier to change them.

An "Embarrassing" Service Call? A better word I would think of would be EXPENSIVE!! After removing the Vehicle, paying for the Hazardous Material Clean Up, and the additional time you had connecting the Fill Tube, that had to cost you a FORTUNE!! Perhaps you noticed I did not mention the 30 Gallons of Fuel that the customer pumped all over the Parking Lot, that said customer had to expect you to pay for, that's cause any fool that pumps that much gas all over the parking lot without noticing it, and taking IMMEDIATE Corrective Action, deserves to pay for 2 Tanks of Gas. Unbelievable !!

Your work environment went from another factory mechanic in a corporate shop to the most positive and happy workplace I have seen that doesn't have a slide. You seem to have hit the ground running when you got tossed from the last job and haven't worked a day since despite now running your own shop and even taking on scrapping/restoration projects. 26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @jan58joubert14 says:

Why I love Ray, his language skills is unreal. When he took the fuel line retaining clips off: As he so often say, "Words": "… pocket screwdriver to unloosen the retainers…." new word (to me) – unloosen, except I thought unloosen = making it tight. So I looked it up and loosen = partially undo something. Unloosen = completely undo something or according to dictionary "to set it free". This not native English speaker learned from Ray, yet again.

Well done – But!! You should never use a power electric too when that much spilled fuel is present. Flash Fire could result – due to the sparks from the armature of the electric motor…
use either a hand socket or a air ratchet. The reason I say this is that Ive been through a flash fire where my right hand got burned- thankfully it regenerated back to near normal But it was a very close call!!

😂😂 I love it when you speed up the camera like that and talk at the same time. It sounds like the chipmunks are working on the vehicle

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @jackschissler255 says:

I’m surprised those pumps work. They have all that electrical wiring exposed and it sits in gasoline ⛽️. I always was told liquids and electricity don’t mix so how can these work?

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @tedjohnson64 says:

I’m sorry, but… was this actually reproducing the original test scenario? At the start of the video, you reached in through the window (without opening the door) and got a long crank. Not opening the door means the fuel pump priming action (the brief buzzing when opening the driver door) doesn’t occur. I thought you did this deliberately.

At the end of the video, you opened the door (rather than reaching through the window). This means the fuel pump priming sequence occurred.

Why does it matter? Because priming the pump invalidates a test of the check valve integrity.

Especially if the failed check valve was the check valve in the fuel rail, rather than the check valve in the fuel pump unit.

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @davidwright1653 says:

Why would you handle a brand new fuel pump with filthy caked up grimy hands?! You couldn't wear gloves for this job? Then switch them out with clean ones to handle the pump? Must be your first day on the job because that's such a lazy rookie move. UHGG!!!

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @waynesitarz424 says:

    That was a glove job.

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @ronaldsmith214 says:

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @ralph5476 says:

Always amazed at the range of tools you have, Ray, and need, to do any job now. The half inch socket set, set of ring spanners and open enders, doesn't begin to cut it now.

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @johndickerson9328 says:

Hey Ray 👋. I was wondering if you ever considered getting a Drive-On lift 🤔. That sure would make working on these Biger vehicles easier, and safer.

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @larryl43 says:

QUESTION can a check valve be installed as close to the tank to prevent having to dropping the tank?

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @johnt.848 says:

The new fuel tank straps didn't have the insulating material on them like the old ones had. That stuff is not just for looks.

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @LesReeves says:

On such a dirty job Me personally I would have worn gloves even though people grizzle about them getting sweaty I prefer sweat to unknown contaminates from road grime & work site pickup(muddy building sites).Everybody working on those sites wear rubber boots so that tells me possible contaminates.

  82. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @LA_Commander says:

Hey Ray, big fan here. Average home mechanic. I remember reading in several places that you're supposed to replace the fuel filter when you change out the fuel pump. Is that correct? I don't remember seeing you do that in this video.

  83. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @JamesApril-sl4yw says:

the gas hose clamp screws face up because at the ford plant the hoses are installed before the body is installed. good show
