I had a friend ask me if I could weld him up a custom receiver for his hitch on his 4runner so he could tow his 1/4 military trailer. Sure, why not, what could go wrong. -Enjoy!

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars George Simpson says:

You know you can just buy what you just made, right? Or, Tweak the trailer rather than the hitch?

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 0129145 says:

I hope his client watches the video so he knows the bolts aren’t tightened!

The sound of the buzzing splatter of the big welder takes me back to middle school industrial tech using an arc welder to lay sick beads. I used to lay some uniform arc beads and oxy-acetalyne beads as well. I love the sound of the arc/mig welder though. The torch did make some nice little pools that all you really needed to do was keep moving in a small circular pattern. It makes me want to fab something again.

That was just a deez nutz protector not a strength point

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John M says:

Ummm, I do weld all the time, do make a bunch of crap on the side. What on earth is he going to be towing that you need that heavy of a hitch? Plus if you need holes would it not be better to drill holes before putting that huge gusset on?

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Oby-1 says:

To all of the amateurs watching this. Always , always clean off the mill scale before welding MIG. Especially when welding something that will be used on a public highway.
Check out the channel Welding Tips and Tricks and the title MIG vs Mill Scale.
Just because one can do something, doesn't mean one should do something.

I remember doing this sort of stuff in the UK, way back before tow-bars required EU type approval.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Hawks says:

    Good job dude🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars cype man says:

Decent welding for an occasional welder, which most of us are.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Grizz Mann says:

    Nice welding cap.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Thompson says:

Watch all your videos and like them all. First comment I have made. Take those gloves off using that drill press…your fingers will thank you. Take care.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dean Sapp says:

Eric, have you had that frame rusting 4 runner on the lift lately ?

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stu Korth says:

    Great job

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dave Marsh says:

    Nice job!

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dave Marsh says:

Consider beveling the tube at the weld for better penetration and fusing. And it’s a great practice to grind off the mill scale at the joints for clean welds.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dcast777 says:

Man, I like to over engineer things but that hitch is at a whole another level, lol.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars AngryDINGUS says:

Wow, didn't even lube up your welds 😏

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fozman says:

Not trying to give you crap but that steel plate looks 1/2 in. From the video doesn't look like you had enough penitration. Also why didn't you cap or layer the welds. But honestly what you built is seriously over kill the bolts on tow bar or frame attached to truck will break before anything else does. Looks good though but I would prefer a hotter welder.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Lucy says:

    Good fabrication!

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jim Vet says:

awesome job boss. 1/4 trailer mac daddy hitch for a mac truck "-)

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andy Reynolds says:

That drill is way too fast, cheers

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Homer says:

To get good penetration heat it up for deep welds

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Homer says:

That is like $60-$80 at the most

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Homer says:

Eric from S.M.A. they sell a ryobi portable drill press that will clamp to any work bench

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TREVOR Sargent says:

New subscriber here as a welder you are a great mechanic tip when welding flats keep them horizontal better pen and neater welds. Cheers great vids central queensland Australia

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Carl Byington says:

    SMA FAB !!

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andy Wirsing says:

I am the friend with the military trailer, a m416. So this receiver works great as expected. Needed a little length on it to get any canoes/kayaks away from the vehicle. Trailer sits level with both the 4 runner and a chevy express van. Behind the 4 runner, mostly hauls dead animals, but has made quite a few long heavy trips behind the van. Another video of how to open a 4 runner hood with a busted latch, is the 4 runner.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Trolling 4 Dollars says:

TIP: To find the center-to-center distance between two equally sized holes, use the inside tangs of your caliper, measure the hole size. Without changing the setting, zero the read out. Now measure the outside to outside of the two holes; Instant C2C dimension.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matt Connor says:

Where's the clamp on the material being drilled on the drill press?

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gregory Thomas says:

May the 4th be with you!

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MrMotofy says:

This would actually be a drawbar, not a receiver. The hitch receiver receives the drawbar 🙂

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MrMotofy says:

I would add more holes lower, for regular trailer height. Use a good oil based enamel to hold up well or truck bedliner. Oversize holes to allow for paint inside hole. Use a bolt on hitch receiver mounted in the bed to drop drawbar into and keep from flying around in bed

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Weir says:

Not much you can do about welding wire that's older than your kids. Mild steel will rust in unheated shops. Gas shielding causes less slang and contamination, but you gotta love the availability of these machines. Nice vid

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe R says:

    Great Job as always Eric!!!

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Bradley says:
