So didn't expect this this morning. Yeah, my Silverado is broken. It's not cool I don't know. I'm here by myself and I don't have a jumper box here and I don't have a battery charger here.
How am I gonna get this thing to work Cables: These batteries are like six months old I bought them from the place I used to work at. What's the deal? Are they really dead? Yeah, they're dead as a doornail. What is this? So you're telling me I can't have a weekend without getting a dead back. This is nonsense.
All right I need the shark Key Unbelievable I have never had my truck not start. Why cold? Uh-huh? Uh nope. not there yet. One click.
No okay, that's not gonna work I have a battery under there. but I can't get to it. uh because I can't get that little hold down thing removed and I don't want to break it. So um I need to come up with a new plan.
The new plan is to well figure out how to jump start this truck. I was gonna use this but I can't use this. it's not working. Hmm what do I do I don't have any other batteries around here? Uh see.
Yeah, no that's a negative. I have no batteries in here. uh what do we got here? I do have a battery in here I guess I can use this one I don't want to take it out Um I know I think I have enough power to at least get this thing uh to come out of gear or out of park or whatever. Yeah, no starting? Yeah, yeah.
Okay, here's how we're gonna do this work. Yeah, that'll be all right. Hope so. it's either gonna work or it's not.
Let's do four low. Yeah. low range. Totally gonna work.
Now we just need to cut the wheel over that way and drive towards the trailer. Oh, this is going to be hard. turning that without power. steering was harder than it looked Wheels turned.
We're gonna drive it right over there. This is stupid. Is that okay? Very close. Okay, that'll be fine and contact.
How about I'll push my truck into the pond. Can you imagine how horrible that would be? I Think we're good. All right. Reverse forward.
Yeah. I think that's close enough. Okay, that is why I own these 25 or seven foot long jumper cables because you never know and you gotta run power across the cornfield. Ridiculous.
That battery better be good. Put this up here black for negatory and those are positive good. One more. yeah.
okay. Are you powered. Try again. Beginning engine starting sequence.
Now that's not enough. Oh so close. bad connection at the batteries. we'll just wiggle them cranked a little bit.
Start: Oh come on. this is not okay. It's it's just like not I have stuff to do. so one more time.
Oh almost like it almost went I move these over to the driver's side battery. not that one over here on this one because this one has bolts in it instead of just the regular battery lugs. I'm thinking maybe it'll get a better connection. Fingers crossed.
Come on truck. I Have stuff to do today. You cool? Not what I wanted to do today. No worries. gotta have some kind of power generation in here. Something somewhere I got lawn mowers, the frogs. hmm it's not gonna work, that's not gonna work. that's not gonna work I don't think that does work? Um yeah.
I can feel it. That's what I need I got a battery charger in here. That's what it is. No more.
Okay, let's try something uh-huh here and then over here. is this gonna work. This is probably not. charges ancient More Steam All right, 10 volts about or 10 amps about 50 amps.
How about all the amps? That's better. Now do we have better voltage in here? What's up? Oh cool. This alternator is crap I Don't This is not okay. There's no way this thing should have died.
No way. I don't even care if it's cold. this batteries are six months old. What is this? Okay, yeah there we go.
back in business now. See you guys later Going to work. Thanks for watching over and out.
Yeah frustrating when the last mechanic killed the battery because his test drive was a start, pump the brake pedal then shut it down. Several times over a couple days never leaving it run long enough to charge it up!
Why wouldn’t you hook the charger directly to the truck?
Die hards have been going bad so often . No warning or good reason. I had to stop selling them. I tried better quality die yards . Same problem.
It's a chev that's the problem
That's why I always keep a jump pack in the car. Even if I never have to us it someone else might need a jump. Luck favors the prepared.
Those damn side post batteries aren’t worth a damn switch to top post glass mat batteries and you’ll never have an issue starting your truck or install a portable generator in your bed so you can do jump starts on other vehicles and your own, and put a bigger alternator in your truck instead of the stock 190 amp put a 250 amp alternator in and you’ll never have any issues with your batteries
Who chiropractes the chiropractor?
Come on we all know Canada you have to have a smoke and a beer once you hook up battery cables. . Let enough power move to dead battery
“Lucky” (Napoleon Dynamite)
Typical Exide battery.
I hate to admit it…. but the lawnmower will work when no other options exist. Just have to leave it running for a few minutes with tge cables hooked up. Again that's a last resort type situation though
I agree 6 month old batteries should be good, however was there something silly as leaving a light or some other item switched on, or is your alt stuffed.
pop clutch to get a start Which has some friends are hill
Tow it to work with your HDX 700 🤣🤣🤣
NOCO will be calling !
Always carry a portable jump box in ur truck
Good Lord man thank God you live in flatland cuz if you'd been up here in the mountains that would have been a totally different situation…. Also remembering those batteries new parts don't mean good parts!
Dude… I've boosted a couple vehicles and my motorcycle with one of my Dewalt 20 volt batteries and a couple pieces of Romex. Works great!
Typical late model GM trucks.. they never go dead until you're parked at the furthest point from any source of power to charge them back up. This seems to be a recurring problem with these. I don't understand why GM hasn't done a recall for battery drain issues.🙄
If you only knew someone with a rollback.
it stinks when a battery dies, especially without anything that you can see that caused the discharge.
hope you find the issue fast. there is nothing worse then being stranded any where, even at home.
you should charge up that trailer battery and fix the access to the ATV battery. you never know when
you might need a jump!
this is what happens when you don't connect the batteries correctly for a jump start. Negative to the jumping battery should be earthed to the trailer chassis
Any chance it's the new Banks upgrades that drained the batteries?
People have this idea that mechanics motors never break down and if they do you must be a bad mechanic .
You need a lithium ion charger for the liters of your truck. Maybe 150 buckaroos
This is what makes you such a good mechanic, you are able to think outside the box to solve your problems.
Kind of like 'the roofer's roof leaks'. <grin>
Ray. Why do you put negative lead on dead battery.
In uk we always use earth point on engine.
@RainmanRaysRepairs Even if a battery is one day old it can become defective from the manufacturer. Maybe something happened on the way when it was being transported.
Batteries these days seem more "fragile" than when I was a lad.
I recently had a 'Dodo" battery and had to get roadside service to replace it. 3 months later same thing. Yep Alternator was checked and doing it's thing nicely.
The battery had failed so I claimed on the warranty and got anothery fitted.
I'd be cheeky and go back to the old employer and make a claim mate.
Eric
My 2013 ram has electric steering. Never thought about it but is that even possible to turn without power? 🤔
I love that trained mechanics have the same reaction as the rest of us when their car/truck won't start…
For a few hundred dollars you can get a high output alternator from Mechman Alternator 250, 320, 400 amps what ever your needs call for. The car stereo competition hobby got these HO alternator manufacturers going.
The VTX will work unless it's been ragged out, probably won't start the truck though. Lol
This does not happen to all of us. Sensible people drive manuals.
Oh shite! Try that repositioning move here in the mountains!!!
How does something like this happen to Rain Man Ray? 👀
I am guessing it is the Banks stuff you hooked to your OBD2 port.
An arctic cat in Florida that's rich
Ray you have a battery in the back of that 4 Wheeler I seen a red optima
DieHard done died, hard.
Just take the Polaris lol
Time for a Tundra!
Horrid visions of the Silveraydo going down a hill, up the embankment, across the road, and into the swamp. Good Work
We have ALL been there!
Flat battery do my head in 😡
I don't know why you didn't use the frontend loader…. you could've jumped it… I'm glad I'm not the only one who has that problem…
HAH!!!!! ALMOST used the famous mechanic oriented 'F' word! 🙂
Just shows ta go ya, even mechanics' vehicles can break down.
The Dirty Max done you Dirty.
Are those AGM batteries? I live in Minnesota and I can honestly say that they suck in the cold subzero temperatures they don’t hold up here in the cold, three four days and that diesel’s not going to crank….. I have a red top in my gas square body that won’t start it if it sits for a month without disconnecting it in the summer months even…. Any way kudos for adapting and overcoming the issue.
Hay you could have pushed the Chevy to the levy, but it was dry, so good old boy Ray pushed it to the pond
There was a tractor right there, it's 12v right?
And it always happens at the worst possible time, like it could not have happened while you were at the shop mate. Glad your brain kicked into oh wait I have mode.
Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘
Ray done dirty by the dirtymax 😡
Dude you've got the morning grumbles!
No such animal as late to work @ own business. You're Always Working !
You need a @betterbatterybolt1871 for the Silverado.
Side post batteries not as susceptible to corrosion, but suck for jumping. So bad battery, bad alternator (should have showed up on amp meter gage) or parasitic draw.
I would have liked to hear his wife narrating, looking out the kitchen window wondering what is he up to this morning?
Good luck trying to start a two battery deisel with one battery.
So where's "VEHICLE B"?
For carrying out "PLAN B"
You're lucky this didn't happen during a power outage.
While the charger is out, why don't charge the other batteries?
Your Banks intake took all the juice, it drain your batteries.
The green solution would have been to get out the Harbor Freight solar system, hook it up, and go for coffee.
For the rest of us, get out the good voltmeter, and connect it to the battery. Observe the battery voltage with the engine running. A dead battery, if it can still hold a charge, will make the alternator produce around 14.5 volts. Turn the headlights on and observe the voltage. If it drops below 14 voltage take a hard look at the voltage regulator and alternator. Ray's scan tool should tell the story, along with the battery load tester he uses. A bad diode in the alternator will kill a good battery overnight.
A few days ago when I mentioned site by side to push/pull dead vehicles in/out of shop I had envisioned an airplane dolly sorta. Clearly pushing can work. Now someone with fabrication skills needs to create the hookup part and sell them. 😊
You left us hangin’ with the “Why was battery dead?” Help… 🤠🇺🇸
That's why you should have had a strap connection your side-by-side to your truck so it didn't roll away, into the pond
I hope your day got better. It would be terrible if a no starter was a sign of how the day progressed – it does happen. Just like walking out to a flat tyre!
Very Florida man way to start your day!
If it clicks like that and you leave your key in the ignition, DO NOT CLOSE YOUR DOOR…IT SOMETIMES LOCKS THE DOORS…ASK ME HOW I KNOW THIS .
MINE IS AN 07 CLASSIC STYLE
Everyone should have a Jumper box in their car. Those Noco ones go on sale quite often. Saved a nice old church lady going to choir practice the last time I used mine. Unlike a lot of youtuber(*cough cough heavy machine operators) you need to keep them charged.
Ray's ingenuity and perseverance to solve problems are not only interesting, they are inspiring. I wonder though, where is wife unit? This would have been a great teaching lesson for Lauren … how to jump start a GM truck from a Honda minivan.
That truck is a pile of 💩
What happened to generator you used for hurricane?
Your Banks gadgets might be draining the battery
Its my Wife units Birthday.
She really is my 💝 valentine..
Really ??
A dentist child have the worst teeth.
You need to join AAA.
So … Why did it die on you?🤔
Hi, I have a question for you. I live in South Africa and am interested in the possibility of buying a JEEP but their reliability is in question? what must I look out for and which is the better model for fuel consumption? V8's are not a big thing here as fuel costs are dramatic.
Next time check that you close the door and turn off the lights… Hehehe… I know thats not funny.
I have replaced my 7.3 starter in the snow. At least it was nice out.
I gotta laugh at the brand name – because when they die, they DIEHARD! New 'nator and warranty those batteries. Get higher CCA AGM ones. Never realised how sick my Cummins was with 2 mismatched batteries until a 4am cold start clickkety clak of doom what was worse, it was at work. Jump leads of shame deployed, and a 1.0 French car had enough amperes to start a 5.9. 🤦
Take it for what it is. When starting with jumper cables. I was taught to wait 5 to 15 minutes before starting. During that time, the empty battery is brought to a better level. Good video, thank you.
DieHard means when it dies it's hard lmao 🤣😂
Try optima batteries
Crazy, but WORKS 🙂 Return the batteries. They must be in warranty.
Give the old battery charger a good Star Ray it saved the day 👍
Hey Ray and Comment Section,
What is your "Ray watching routine," and from where are you viewing?
I wait about 8 hours after the video posts, and then in the morning, I take my morning meds, and when I start feeling better, I pause the video to make coffee. I finish the video drinking coffee. I am in Japan.
It would be the best thing that ever happened to you if that Chevy went into the pond it will save your future. Get a ford😜
This was a great way of showing the proper order of escalation. Always start with the easiest thing first and progress as needed to get the job done. And great use of documenting to prove your excuse for being late to the boss.
what I did when I had dual batteries was install a heavy duty relay between the two batteries. When the truck was shut off only one battery remained connected. Once the truck started the second battery would engage automatically and I had an override switch on the dash so I could manually engage the second battery if the first was dead or I needed the extra power of the second battery without running the engine..
Effectively in that situation the truck would jump itself.
Do you have 2 starting batteries or 1 starting and 1 deep cycle?
They make good isolators that let you hook a deep cycle will run your 12volt systems.
Easy to ruin a starting battery if you leave stuff on with ignition off as they don’t like getting low.
Let’s you have a battery to jumpstart yourself with too. Much better system than 2 starting batteries.
Take the belt off your alternator and use a drill to charge your battery
Get yourself a Noco BoostX!
Just my imho I'd check key off parasitic draw.
I always carry a fully charged jump starter box with me. I helped many people with dead batteries.
Diehard dyed hard.electrical short in charge system bad recfier and diode in alternate your system is faltering because of bank system
I bought them at the place I use too work at. lol that says it all
