Customer States: Engine does not start sometimes, you turn the key and nothing happens.
This 2008 Hyundai came it with an intermittent no crank condition. What is happening is the starter and the engine to not turn on when the ignition key is. The failure doesn't happen all of the time. We checked out the simple things first like the battery and the battery cables. The ignition system seemed to work normally and the relay also checked out. The diag went down to the starter motor and we had to use a spliced wire lead to connect a test light for more diagnostic information.
The faulty component was not what you would expect!

that car is in good shape – clean
Love your videos Ray you’re a good person, but I’m trying to figure out how you knew it was the shift module, or was it kind of an experience thing and a gamble, just curious love your knowledge☝🏻🙏🏻💯
Well, it's a 2012 Hyundai so we know it's not an immobilizer issue…
I’m just now starting to learn about cars and how to work on them and let me tell you this is the most educational channel I’ve found so far. Thank you!!!!
! It was what I thought. In my rigs its called 'neutral safety switch" and i have had them go out before. In fairness (never!) I went there cause the title said /not/ what you think so i was "NSS or shift linkage"
Guessed it would be the relay. Wrong! Good Video
Pin Wiggleage ?
If it's not too much money, I like to replace the relay as well. That gives me a $10.00 – $20.00 warranty. Especially with fuel pump ⛽️, & starter job's. Ever since I started doing that, I have had "ZERO" comback's.
You DUH MAN Ray 🎉
I like watching you figure out how it works rather than looking it up. As for the new inhibitor switch it will go right on with the car in neutral. You can also align the metal cable bracket by sticking a bolt or screw driver in the hole when it's in neutral.
can we set the transition shift to the ( N ) position and try to crank it . for a test purpose ?
and see if that issue still happens?
I have a 2009 Santa Fe with the 3,3 liter. Last week I turned the key and nothing happened. I checked the battery cables and they were clean and tight. I disconnected the cables and cleaned them and the battery terminals anyway. Still nothing. For some reason, I recalled an issue I'd had in the 60's where the neutral starting switch was shot. I have no idea if that's even a thing anymore but I popped the shift lever into neutral and it started right up. So far, I haven't had a repeat of it not starting.
My 2011 acted like it locked up. 500 miles later the engine exploded. These are horrible cars.
I completely enjoyed this diag great video.
Wow bro I'm impressed, that's good work and awesome diagnosis. You definitely know your stuff👏👏👏. That would've made me just burn it to the ground🤣🤣. Again kudos for another awesome video!
I have never seen a car that not crank but it did start.
May I make a request – limit the "go ahead" expression?
neutral / park inhibit switch ???
What a great diag and explanation process. Very educational!
You finished breaking the range selector switch it what you meant to say
Wow, A Hyundai 1.8 that don't have piston slap, tick, tick, tick, tick LOL!!!!! I rebuilt one last year as Hyundai wouldn't honor it because the people that owned it were the 4th owner, I had it bored .020 over new pistons rings and rod and main bearings and the head redone and new timing chain and guides and tensioner, runs like a champ to this day, car had 130,000 miles on it when the ticking started!!!!
Heeeeeeeeeeyyyyyy Raaaaaaaay check da flux capacitor on dat space mobile
Thank u for sharing your knowledge I am a mechanic with little electrical knowledge and am learning through your channel
Thanks for taking us through the troubleshooting steps. It is one thing to tell us the problem but even better to show us the thought process, full diagnostic, full repair. Helps us all!!
Once again "Dr. Diagnose" to the rescue!
Can you autopsy the old unit?
Really enjoy your electrical troubleshooting. Your online diagrams are killer too.
I thought it was related to the drivers side mirror, somehow.
I used to own an Elantra for 20+ years. All Hyundais have an issue with injectors overheating. You have a no crank no start when this happens. Because the cooling system isn’t running at startup. Solution: wait 10mn and try again. In this case I would recommend to check the cooling systems and the injectors.
I haven’t watched the end yet, but my car had similar symptoms, was the ignition key cylinder. You wrote that off early, because ignition 2 was disengaging, but that doesn’t mean the start wire was engaging. An older car of mine was the neutral safety switch. so we’ll see what happens.
Hyundai design doesn't age well, i remember when these were new, and quirky, but now the bland civic or corolla i think aged better..
I had the same issue found the problem by checking if starter work with neutral.
Well done !!!!!
I’d be willing to bet any other shop would’ve instantly diagnosed this as an ignition switch. Goes to show the extent of care Ray puts to not just fire a parts cannon hoping to fix the issue.
Will there be a video on that Lexus SC430? 🤔
Hey Ray, how about doing a tool review. Right now budget "advanced" scanners are all the rage among non-professional mechanics. I'm not a professional auto mechanic but I am a pro small engine mechanic. I bought one of the budget advanced scanners and would like to get your opinion of the scanner. I hadn't bought a scanner in over 10 years so I was due for a new one. The older shade tree scanner would only scan the main computer. The newer scanners are also looking at the brake, body, transmission computers etc. The scanner that I bought is the LAUNCH CRP129E Elite 2024 OBD2 Scanner. I know it's no where near the scanner that you use but for the average shade tree mechanic (I actually work in an air conditioned/heated garage) how do you think it would do? I ran it on my 2007 Chevy Silverado Classic with the 5.3. It threw up codes for problems with my anitlock brakes.
Where was Lauren's Mandatory Appearance Ray??
You'll be getting som Reeeeee lol 😆
I called neutral safety switch at the beginning. My daughters Camry had the same symptoms.
Good video, Ray! I don't like the fact you used an aftermarket part. Wondering if the switch was out of alignment? I had that on the shifter once and on tranny once.
No, no, no NOriellys! 🤦🏻♂️ Six MAF sensors in a year due to poor quality of their electrical parts.
That's why they call him Rainman 246 Toothpicks!
I haven't finished the video yet but I'm guessing that since it is a Hyundai the problem is the paint. 😂
What, no wife unit appearance?
Great video Ray.
Pin wiggling action
Good one Bryan.😊
👍👍👍
Didn't we do another one of these sensors a few months back?
Hey, not to discredit Ray for his amazing diagnostic work, but can we all give some applause to this fantastic specimen of the EverStart battery currently installed in this vehicle?
I mean, look how many restarts he got out of it without a booster!
I noticed that the “P” for park on the dash was missing when you unplugged them replugged the natural safety so definitely the issue was with the fingers in the switch. Good diag and enjoy the vids
My concern was adjusting the "new" NSS as it came delivered, to make it fit. If the shaft is worn in the gearbox then it might have been doing its job and not allowing start because the box is not fully in park or neutral positions. Might work for a month or two but then the fault may come back as it wears a bit more.
I always tried moving the gearshift lever while holding the key in the start position when a vehicle wouldn't crank. Back in the days before a vehicle had to be in park to remove the key, it was very common for the driver to forget to put the vehicle in park then it wouldn't start when they wanted to leave. I don't know if moving the gearshift lever would have changed anything in this case but if it did, it would have pointed you in that direction.
hold key in start position and move shifter back and forward been around since 1963 here,
Absolutely inspiring to DIY person that looking over and over this channel. Great job Raymond!
I need to do a similar inspection on a 2004 2500 hd chevy. Relays and battery are good. Starter is less than 3 years old, which doesnt mean anything, i know. There were no warning signs of start failure. It just quit working. No click or anything. Weather is just now starting to get nice enough to diagnose it. The trans switch lit a bulb over my head, though. Thanks for your videos.
Keep the diag videos coming! Definitely a favorite.
Anyone else would have changed the starter in error…NOT Ray! Nice diag!
Would scan data display that the car was in drive? might be a clue….
What, no autopsy on the transmission switch? 😢
Ray, have you ever wondered why scan tools don't have an attachment on the back to allow them to hook over the steering wheel for ease of use?
same car as mine 2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS 4D 1.8L love my Elantra.
Let’s talk about that battery lol it did so many starts and just kept on starting
Retired ATM tech for over 20 years. Always took pics on arrival and steps during diagnostics. The pics and stateme t of repair was for my history and for any other tech in the the future calls if needed. Worked on every ATM manufactured and sub models. My SLA (service level agreement) was 2 hours on site window after call was generated by customer, with a 4 fix time. The Diagnostic was always using a 7 step plan on every call. Stated with the cables/wiring and worked up to software. You never know what to be the fault. Always used the senses on vision, hear, touch, smell, and sometime taste. Never met a ATM or smart safe that defeated me. I enjoy your video's and narration of the fix. Thank you and I wish we lived closer to you shop. Live in SC.
you and your power tools Ray I was waiting for u to break that switch all to hell you shouldn't be using it on that switch are u that lazy man!!
Your mastery of diagnosis is unrivalled.
I really enjoy watching you go through the diagnosis of an issue . Thank you it was fun . Stay safe , have fun .
You’re a genius!!
Oddly enough, I thought it was a neutral safety switch in the first five minutes, but I guess that is just "old school" diagnostics. Good job nonetheless.
Love watching.
you do good work!
you're intelligent and you're funny all in one🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
That's a diag and a repair.
My 1972 Charger Rallye doesn't have all that jazz, so it is either the key switch or neutral safety switch. So much easier back in the day. No electronics controlling gizmos
Thanks!
Excellent and superb diag
Ray, i have this same issue with my 2015 elantra. however with mine, once it does the no crank no start, it will NOT crank after trying the key a couple times. i’d be stuck completely. i found that when it does this, if i reach in and play with the signal wire to the solenoid, once i hop back in and turn the key, it works every single time. i found this out by having my friend hold the key in the run position while i mess with the wire. it started as soon as i touched the wire, after sitting in that spot for days with no luck. it’s good that i know a quick solution for it (cause i swear it only happens when i’m far from home), however i don’t know how to proceed from here so that the issue is permanently solved
I use to have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra and these cars are common problem was the neutral safety switch going bad. If you have a black plastic cover neutral switch you will need to replace it with an aluminum cover neutral switch because that’s the newer improve part.
I wish there was shops here that were not about making money by screwing the customer and ran by people like you. So far I have ran into crooks crooked dishonest owners with drug and alcohol issues. It would be nice to work with someone like you who is in the shop doing something and being active in everyday on what is going on.
I think it’s a Hyundai. That’s why it doesn’t work. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 they always have a little weird problems and their engines are trash
Hyundai is TWO syllables. Hyun. Dai.
Of course it had to be some stupid subsystem. It's been years since I've seen a failing starter motor or power switch packing up. Nice job dude!
At first I thought the main problem was that Fram oil filter.
When you buy the part new it is in neutral
I know that I am late but it sounds like the steering wheel issue.
You failed to check the failsafe of the new switch.
Impressive Ray man!
I don't work on cars, but I really enjoy your videos. Your narration is easy to follow and informative thank you for what you do. If I ever break down in Florida, I would want to bring my vehicle to you. You give the profession an excellent name, my friend.
🇺🇲👍
It makes perfect sense but I have worked in electronics for 40 years
My first thought was a bad key or ignition switch, but I know nothing haha
Just strip that column and jam a USB flash memory stick in there. 😉😉
If I ever have issue with my vehicle i'd love to bring it to Rays
I had to replace the neutral safety switch on a 07 Ford Ranger. The brand new one was bad. Took it back and swapped it out and that one was bad too. Loved doing it so much, I did it 3 times.
Tell me you checked the starter cutout switch in all positions of the shift lever…?
😬
Very nice diag sequence Ray
