Being able to change a starter from the engine compartment is gravy.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ammanzi1 says:

Iโ€™ve noticed you never check the battery fluid

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Petrescu Florin says:

Using his vast and sophisticated tools (the hammer), Ray started to work on the starter!

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim D says:

Those hose clamps are very rusty. Wonder if this car was in a flood?

How cool is that lil nub brush?!

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Dean says:

Just a note. All factory Toyota nuts and bolts will never be 13mm. It is a superstition thing. 13 is unlucky. Never had a 13mm nut or bolt on 4 different Toyotas I have had from 1994 to 2012.

Rainman Ray's 12V battery terminal cleaning technique is truly legendary. Would applying a dollop of gear grease on the starter cog/gear of this 2012 Camry be a good thing or just a bad idea? I am just a back-yard mechanic..but I am the original owner of a 20-year old Japanese built Camry that runs just fine..on the second starter and second alternator..

    Great Content.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dennis Smith says:

If you are thinking a heat soak problem, I would have closed the hood to keep more of the heat in the engine bay.
Great video as usual though, Ray!

The moment you described with the customer said I already knew bad starter solenoid. You went through the proper steps to prove that fact which means you're an honest mechanic. If I ever had to take a vehicle anywhere I'm coming all the way down to you. And I'm half a country away.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jackhouston357 says:

Where. To get that wire brush socket

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Nawrocki says:

Here in MI I've had the key FOB be so cold that it interfered w. Start button signal

All terminals deserve attention from the mighty power brush

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars AV84USA says:

FYI, on Toyota push to start ignition you just push the button and release, no need to hold it until it starts.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Sprague says:

I had a Pontiac that would do that after driving a long time. I found the starter got so hot that it locked up. Cheap fix one bag of ice thrown on the starter and it would start. I replace the starter eventually.

Thank you rainman ray!! After watching your videos all weekend what do you know I get a 2015 Ford Edge with a slow crank and a buzzing sound coming from under the hood. Thanks to you the first thing I checked was the battery terminals as you point out so often the were loose as hell. Now instead of doing parasitic draw test on the battery first I will do a battery service and tighten down the terminals and what do you know my problem is gone! Love your videos keep making them you are very good at what you do!!

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Barry Fletcher says:

Hey Ray. Love the vids. Learned a lot I have a quick question…I have a 2010 Grand Caravan. I added a back-up camera that's always on when my lights are on..I wired it that way so I can always see what's going on behind me. As I worked on it I unplugged the factory camera..now it won't work, all pins/ connections are good. Does it need to be "turned on" after being unplugged? It worked fine before this.. thanks brother.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Martin Naylor says:

Hi Ray, battery terminal cleaning tool. You usually use a hand cleaning tool. Thatโ€™s the red one must be two part tool. Now you have two piece cleaning set . Useing a battery drill great.

My step son is a brilliant person but not a car guy. He bought a โ€˜09 Camry from family and he had the same issue, no crank no start. I chuckled, and explained itโ€™s a hybrid. Great person, just not a car person and didnโ€™t know and has never driven a hybrid.

dunno why some people think they need to see up a junebugs arsehole from 6 miles away when driving at night,, those high beams are deadly,, especially to guys like me in a low car driving amongst jacked up trucks, their low beams are already blinding enough.

I like it when Toyotaโ€™s Fail.
Toyotaโ€™s have a lot of starter problem, I guess Scotty was correct when he said a Starter and Alternator are considered regular maintenance on a Toyota.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nate Davis says:

Did you see all the wires shooting out of your brush tool off that starter terminal? I hope you had on some safety glasses! ๐Ÿค“

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bass Player says:

You might want to shut the hood to get the most heat….

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars spencercpu1983 says:

smart key issue if battery is low or dead if key is in your pocket you press button and down on brake it won't crank . but you can hold smart key by start button then car will start. but this is starter with solenoid failure.
