Customer Customer States Mechanic Fails Engine Transmission Gas Diesel off road race 4x4 street car daily driver scam dealership dealer technician how to

Hello everybody! Good day to you! Welcome back! Glad you guys are here! We are on a test drive in a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder with 275 107 miles on the odometer. Just got our green light. uh customer States Vehicle is leaking. uh, some kind of a fluid which I saw that it appears to be power steering that's leaking and the customer also states that after a turn the steering wheel does not return to Center See that right there? We just made a left turn.

Now the steering wheel is off to the left, but he said when you make a right hand turn, the steering wheel returns to Center that uh that's scary I'm not sure what that's about, but we're gonna find out here in one moment. when we make this right turn, see what this thing does? Let's take note of the angle at this we are sitting at. so we're going straight. We're like 45 degree angle.

watch this making our right hand turn what is this and left turn some. So we made a right turn, going straight and now we are less than a 45 degree angle. What is that about? Something is not right with the steering system on this particular. Pathfinder So what we're going to do, we're gonna head back to the shop, see what's falling off of this thing.

We'll get it up on a lift, visually inspect the underneath Carriage see what's up with this league and figure out what Don't pull out front of me. We'll figure out what's up with this uh, death trap steering uh type of system we have going on here. So stay tuned because this is going to be a very good video opening. Z Hoods okay before we get started I Just want to give a quick shout out to Lisa and Keith Happy Anniversary I Must say steering is not very responsive and it does feel pretty loose.

I Don't like it. All right We're pulling in back at the shop. Let's get this thing. Uh, up on the rack roadblock.

we have roadblock. Pardon me, pardon me sir, may we may we squeeze by. Nice shorts. Feels weird wearing shorts and boots at the same time.

Anyway, we're gonna rack this thing up and uh, see what the steering is looking like. Make sure we're safe at the very least and then we'll go from there. parking. Ziato We're looking good here.

turning down and contact looking good over there. how's your side looking pretty good? I Think that's good? How about there, your front's not making contact yet. right front it will if you go up higher. oh I guess yeah, let's just do that.

Now it's making corn. Tech All right Pathfinder Moving on up. Okay so what we're gonna do here Troy's gonna help us out. He's gonna shake down this wheel.

So what you're gonna do? Grab a hold of that wheel at the three nine o'clock position, straight elbows and you're gonna rock it left and right and we're looking for any kind of play or wobbles or things that are moving around. It shouldn't be. So you do that and we're gonna look at our uh, our components inside. Keep doing it, sir.

You know we see there's some play here right here in that outer tie rod. See it moving there? Yep, we can see the up and down motion right here and right here. All right man. let's go around to the other side and we'll check out the uh, the right front ball joint see if that one does the same thing.
Zoom's correct here. All right. go ahead and shake. and Shake It No, not much play in that one.

It's okay. All right. go up and down. So you're going to put your fingers, hands at the six o'clock and 12 o'clock position, shake the wheel up and down, and I'm looking for play in the bearings and or ball joints.

Not really seeing much positive ball joints looking. That's pretty good now. interestingly enough, Oh, you're good man. Interestingly enough, we saw that steering wheel end up like 45 degrees and then you know, 50 something degrees or I don't know what was it? 45 and we'll call it 15.

There we go. 15. That's what I meant We saw there was a bunch of play in it, but we cannot recreate that kind of play up here. On the on the uh, on the red.

Try to shake it one more time or don't shake it. just try to turn the wheel a bunch. Let's watch this. uh.

steering gear and stuff. No, nothing's really moving. Okay, so something is moving and changing positions when we put loads on this. So let's uh, let's take a look.

You're good buddy. Let's take a look at our control arms is do these have anything to do with what's going on here? I Have a pry bar Sir I See you here? No, that's that's not left and right motion. See if we can't see this. uh.

bushing from the back side. How's this thing looking here? No, that's not torn. That bushing's okay on that control arm. That bushing's okay.

let's see the big pry bar. Let's see here. All right. No, nothing.

uh, abnormal. but uh. front bushings here. Again, no.

same thing on the right front. Some motion, but nothing that's abnormal to. uh, this type of setup we have. There's always going to be some play in these and rubber bushings, but okay.

I mean if the thing was flopping around here, we could visually see some tears in it. That would be a problem. But this is a it's a that's a non-issue so let's check. Uh, let's check this other one right here.

real quick. just kind of pry against it. Nope. Nope.

All right. So what's the deal here? Why is our steel steering wheel turning? We can see up top this little rag gear. It's kind of like a U-joint made out of rubber that's not torn or falling apart. The stuff's all tight.

Now we do have a leak around here. We did a our guy did mention something about a leaf and what that appears to be is some kind of a steering fluid. I Think that's power steering coming from the steering pump. It's got fluid all over it.

There's some dripping right there. See that there's issue with the fluid they got the pump. but I'm also looking at this rack and pinion here. I'm not exactly impressed with uh, what's going on with the steering gear.
So we've got the zip tie mod going on and there's fluid inside of that Bellows boot. See that right there? I'm thinking this, uh, this rack also has a leak I Don't know which one's the bigger leak. There's obviously a very large one because there's drips everywhere, but we don't know if it's just the pump leaking down onto the steering gear or if the pump is a small leak and the steering gear has a big leak. I'm kind of inclined to believe that the gear does have a leak because uh, we have these zip ties up here.

Let's push back that Bellows boot. You see what I'm doing over here. Come back to next to my head. You can't see from there.

just push that. Push that Bellows boot back. Yeah, look at that. There's a there's a bunch of fluid in there.

see it at the bottom of the Bellow See it? Yeah there it is running out. See those drips? Ah, it's on my foot. Yeah, that's why I didn't want you to be down there looking up. You'll get.

uh, you get the fluid in your face. That's the money shot. Now this right here is interesting. See that rubber bushing? Troy Can you see that right there? All right guys.

So right here you see that. Yeah, that's the bushing that secures the steering gear to this uh, cross member frame section right here. So what I'm noticing is that that piece of rubber is kind of squished out from the side. But over here there is no piece of rubber on the side so that whole bushing might be squished out this way.

I wonder if this rack is moving around? Let's see if I can't pry on the steering gear here. The rack opinion the maybe incite some movement out of it. See what it does? Oh I wonder if that's what's uh, what our problem is? Yeah I don't know. There's really nothing to try on.

Nope, nothing there. Oh nothing. there doesn't move that way. Oh hey, looky there.

Hold on. I Found another clue. Zoom in on our clue here. You see that? Yeah, what do you see I don't think you see.

Come over here right by me. See what? I See, See that? Yeah, no it's not that. see how well we can see that? there's another one of those rubber bushings, right? Yeah, Okay, there's a piece of it sticking up and this side of the, uh, a little strap that holds it on. And then if we look, let me move the camera up.

There we go. There's the other side while pushing. so we have the strap right here, pushing underneath of it. and then that motion's got like little ears or whatever to come out just to help locate pushing inside the strap.

But what we can see on that steering here. See right there where all that grease has been pushed away. Let's see right there what's happening. This car turns and it gets a side load on that steering gear.

The steering gear is moving and when the vehicle goes straight again, that's giving us this huge off-center bit of business for, uh, for that steering wheel. So then if you make a right hand turn, it's pushing that entire assembly the other direction. and then when you straighten it out, the steering wheel straight again. What's happened here is that fluid leak over there has caused that bushing to deteriorate and come apart.
And since there's no rubber holding onto this thing as the vehicle is maneuvering, that gear can actually move left and right. So this thing has got a horrible wheel alignment A problem. and the steering gear is actually not positively affixed to the chassis. So at the very least, what we need to do is replace these bushings right here.

Probably fix the line to prevent those bushings from getting sloppy and Soggy and falling out again. Yeah, look at this one. it's just falling right out. Keep those things from falling back out.

And then there we go. That's gone. Yep, it's over with ruined. No longer safe, Not safe to drive.

It wasn't safe to drive when it got here, but now it's really nice. Yeah, so what we need to do is fix the leak, put new bushings in it, and I'm I'm inclined to recommend that we replace this, uh, steering rack and pinion as well because I know there's a leak at that seal on this side because we saw all that oil running out of bellows boot. So this thing's down for service, not safe to operate. We have forensically investigated the complaint.

I'm probably going to put sway bar bushings in it also, so that's that. That's our conclusion. We got it. That's why the steering wheel does not return to center after making a maneuver.

It needs a well. I Need some steering system repairs, bushings, seals, leaks, and a rack and pinion will be good to go. but that means I'm gonna go ahead and close this video out right now. As always.

I'd like to thank you guys for watching this video. Certainly hope you, uh, you enjoyed this video. If you did enjoy this video, please feel free to let me know about that by tapping that like button down below. Drop me a comment or two while you're down there.

And as always and most importantly, do not forget to have yourselves a great day! See you guys later! Thanks for watching into Pathfinder End of Steering Death Trap diagnosis in the video in transmission. Thank you.

I once drove a work colleague to a garage to collect his car. He said it was in the shop because it was hard to drive in wind. When we got there it was over an inspection pit and the engineer was underneath pushing and pulling looking for loose joints etc. I noticed the bottom of the steering column was moving but not the top. There was 90 degrees of play because one of two bolts in the steering coupling was missing and the other had worn its hole oval. When the engineer tapped the remaining bolt with a screwdriver it fell out leaving no steering at all.

I had a car that was sort of like this, an old Lesabre that I bought for something like $175 when I was dirt poor. The steering would bind up when I’d go around a corner and steering wheel would be at an angle like that. The trick with that car was to have a loose grip of the wheel, as the tension built up in the steering system would release after hitting a bump or whatever shortly after the turn and then the steering wheel would go back to 12 o’clock. If you had a tight grip, the car would suddenly steer instead. Fun times, I was the only one who could drive that car as it scared everyone else. Got me down the road for about a year before the converter started slipping and I finally got a newer and much nicer car.

Due to the length of a video, I was totally expecting the customer to deny repairs. It's crazy what people are comfortable driving in.

I once got my hands on a particularly thrilling one. A friend loaned me his early 80's Toyota Something-or-Other… I think it was a Celica. Smooth sailing, until I begin to steer into a curve at about 45 mph. Suddenly, the ghost of King Kong yanked the steering wheel hard right, out of my grip. Same for left steering. The car was aggressively trying to kill me to death.

As a "thank you" for loaning me the ride, I ended up fabricating and welding in new mount plates to both strut towers. The struts had literally been willy-whacking the wheel houses since the height of the Cold War. One deep pothole away from a mass casualty event.

Also tossed in a new set of quick-struts. But if you can believe it, my friend actually COMPLAINED about my good deed. Turns out, he had become very well trained and accustomed to the handling for several years. He had to learn how to drive the car all over again.

The Nissan just needs to be sent to me for free . Then I could have Ray fix it for me to drive . great stuff Ray ! Thanks man .

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Hunter says:

Yup, Ray, please do not drive a vehicle with no steering again. Wife unit and ankle-biters [and all your viewers] would get upset if you wrapped yourself around a tree.
It is really dumb to have power steering on such a light vehicle anyway, but that is just me.
