During Inspection we found the the front struts and bump stops were worn and deteriorating. Ride quality was surely suffering. Due to the age and mileage, it was best to replace the MacPherson strut assembly rather than piecing the units together. The customer states to install a custom high flow air intake system on the 5.3 powerplant to unlock a throaty intake sound by removing the intake baffle that came with the stock intake plumbing. We talk about the benefits and drawback of installing such intakes. Check out the Banks Performance link below to shop for premium level performance parts for your vehicle. Unlike the cheap knockoff units, the Banks Power products are designed with vehicle specific engineering and are made with the highest quality materials.

Why would anyone do this? For looks? On a Chevy SUV?
Love that high speed hand action!
A lot of the time when I drop things while working in the engine bay of my mustang, I have to jack it up and remove an underside engine cover to get the item out. It's so groovy.
So your going to upgrade your customer with a hot air intake, causing a loss of Horse power?
Ah. You talking about the electrically adjusting struts made me remember my BMW story 😀 For rear struts i spent 1200Eur for both and I had to struggle to get them for that "cheap", because from a dealer these struts go for around 950Eur each, but hey, originals for way cheaper is a good deal
Im not a fan of those (so called cold air intake) i agree with you it a hot air intake. They probably lose a couple HP with it. Plus they have to tune the car to get the benefits of a intake. Otherwise to ECU is expecting the facory intake unless you tune it for that mod. But good job on all the work completed.
I'm getting tired of your inconsistent, you to look for them @5, am west coast
The box on the intake said adds 10 horsepower
Using power tools is not always the fastest way to do it. It's always the best
Why wouldn't you put the hose clamp on the other way (the last clamp on the hose) away from the injector where there was more room 😖 It might have hurt your OCD having a clamp not in the direction of all the other clamps, but it would have been the right thing to do.
That kit looks so poorly designed
Man I’m 100% the same I will for ever grab my 2ft breaker before my impact
The banks intakes are made in China. Designed in the US allegedly.
lol yeah those mag ride struts are costly i got to sell 2 full sets (front&rear as a set) during my time at AZ
Did you tighten the hose clamp on the throttle body?
We need more clickages!!
Can I please get the link for the Chinesium intake? My car motor is running too cold and it has too much horsepower! Thanks.
It's gotta be good for -10 hp.
Have used K&N cold air intakes on several vehicles over the last 25 years. Always helped HP but lowered MPG's.
All of that work to install that piece of shit aftermarket air intake
I think you would gain performance and save a lot of headaches and money by just spray painting the stock intake red.
Ray on fast-forward sounds like he’s on helium 😂
Yet while you get more performance, you eat into the safety margins on the engine. These engines were made to have a top hp. Over boosting the hp leads to the engine failing from going outside of its max hp.
Should have sprayed come MAF cleaner on the MAF before reinstalling it since it was using an oil impregnated filter.
And just buy the Airaid tube and keep the stock air box instead. The Airaid tube is plastic. Those metal tubes get to hot in the summer you can fry an egg on them. Keep the stock paper air filter. Also I would have shortened the PCV hose a little to neaten up the install and used spring clamps on both ends of that hose.
CAI's are a waste of money.
Performance downgrade hehe 😉
Did you forget to tighten the last strut mount? Darn it you got me.
Those so-called cold air intakes are trash. Where are they taking in the air? From underneath the hood where the hot engine is! Plus they use a garbage filter like a K&N. The things do flow more air..and dirt. The setup is a stupid waste of money.
'Hey, Reg, what the hell is that tinny, rattling sound under the hood?" Dunno, Jeff, but it sounds like it's getting into the fan now, dont it?
RED loctite???
Cold Air Intakes that actually work actually either use the old box (Sometimes modified) or have offered an aftermarket box that contains the cold air filter inside a box like the factory setup to actually deliver cold air and better performance. But, that cost money unlike the Chineseium version you installed. lol That heat shield is suppose to do that job but, it just doesnt work. The factory design uses Plasic for a reason because it dissipates heat much better than steel. They also have tops for a reason unlick most aftermarket cold air intakes.
How can an intake in the engine bay harvest cold air?
That one torque strut bottom nut went on pretty easily for a "squash" nut.
I agree with you on the keeping your skills sharp
Ray, since you're mentioning how you "force" Lauren to come to work with you each day, why don't you also show the "idiot"…err…subscriber how you also shackle her to the desk for the first few hours each day. LOL
Most Aftermarket Air Filter Systems are Wasted Cash. Dyno testing exposes this. They only create More Noise , giving only the illusion of increased power .
Did I miss the link you attached to Banks Performance?
Ok , so…… tell me how you really like that intake set up 😂.
Mass flow sensor sounded suspiciously loose to new tube
Why would you lean over the fender and chance scratching the paint when you can reach everything from the side that is already scratched up.
Almost all the chineseiaum items are simple cheap and poor quality copies of quality products.
I think I got the same 'hot' air intake system for my GMC pickup. Had the same issues. I fashioned a couple of thin boards to block engine compartment air. Not sure if it helped. Since there were no instructions. I did not know the little sticker that came with it was for when I had to get it smogged here in California. I had 'lost' the sticker. Fortunately I kept all the stock parts. Also the hose clamp they gave me for the air filter was so bad, It would not stay tight. Ended up replacing it with two smaller hose clamps.
Ray's shop: Where the struts are sizzling and the intakes are stealing all the performance! 😂
YouTube got me
Ray I saw you gave out free advertising on that guy Tahoe on his back glass he wont mind more Phone calls for him. I won't call him because I live in Amish capital.
Hope you got those top strut bolts!
So it was Mounds and not Almond Joy. Because, sometimes it comes with the nuts and sometimes it don't.
Even when you do it the hard way, you make it look so easy.
Stover lock nuts!
Suggestion from an old-timer ;-). Get yourself a set of hand held nut drivers for hose clamps instead of screwdrivers. They are awesome. You can actually ‘grab’ the bolt portion of the clamp and move it at the same time as tightening it. Trust me….you’ll never use screwdrivers again!
It's red, so you know it's Chineseium. It doesn't appear to allow for very much engine movement, I don't think I'd put that on my own vehicle.
This video would be extra cool if was done in your Mickey Mouse/ Donald Duck 🦆 voice….😂
Self drilling, self tapping screws. Great video, thanks Ray.
that's not this issues that it came in for . just do what he asked…. let him deal with the bare wires, and they may have been that way for a reason
also PVC hose is too long… measure and size appropriately
use adhesive on the rubber strip business
I'm surprised u put that after market crap on for ur customers…..
assemble stuff on a bench… never over the engine bay…. then u won't lose screws
also never have extension cords under ur lift arms…. u can slice one and electricute ur self
this video sooo needed the "Under Pressure" sound track treatment
Division skills ….. math skills.
Use a little soapy water to install the rubber gasket
Ha, Ha, Ha🦊
The metal tube doesn't give much insulation either.
Pinch lock nuts that you can thread on by hand? I think not…
Were those struts making noises like clicking or clacking or thunking? Usually happens when the top bushing goes bad…
You a schmart Man Ray!
So are you saying that the after market intakes shouldn’t be used? I’ve had K&N on my 2011 Silverado since new and now has 140 K on it.
If you like mental exercises add 256+512 and convert from decimal (base 10 ) to hexadecimal ( base 16) you will probably need an analog to a abacus or calculator. Base 10 = digits 0 – 9 , base 16 = digits 0 – 9 + A – F. 256 decimal = FF hexadecimal. Think on that the next time you use your computer. All old-school programers had to code all there programs in hexadecimal! ttfn
Not a fan of K&N filters on street cars. The average person does NOT take care of them. They are either filthy dirty or they aren't oiled properly making them act as not having a filter at all. If they aren't oiled, they don't filter.
I was about to reeeee but luckily I watch to the end lol.
The k&n version goes together much nicer and includes a new airbox that lines up with the original tray and air flow location and design
why do you have crappy music playing in that mexican junkyard shop?
Your attention to detail is awesome
$900 a piece? might as well go for good tunable aftermarket ones like King, ADS, Fox, etc.
I hope he sees your video and thanks you for the extra work you did that you didn't charge for.
I have those same gloves. howd youd get them so loose, are those XXXXL ?
I find it funny that you would replace the convilute tubing BUT not cut the PCV hose shorter, even tho you put clamps on it?
What a waste of monies that intake. More sound poorer performance money not well spent. I did appreciate the information from Ray regarding the danger of oil from these oiled filters. Good job buddy!
I tried to explain to my wife that everything is a hammer, but for some reason she got upset when I used the edge of her phone to knock one of the handhold covers back onto her wheelchair.
Quality Chineseum, sounds like an oxymoron. The sound of the suction reminds me of using a toilet plunger!😁
it's all the heat from the exhaust manifold
Ray, what long reach ratchet wrenches are you using? I’ve seen these on the channel before but can’t figure out what they are
Rotflmmfmao @ you saying you have a toxic trait ….. its called something different, but every mechanic, that is or has been a "brand" trained dealer mechanic Has the same know it all attitude, exhibited by all youtube famous content creator, and i applaud you tho, 😅 keep up the good stuff and stay humble if you can 😅😅😅, reason i say the things i did from chrisfix to you alway have that cocky hand jestering , that annoying😅
So potato head client wanted it to sound better? Just cut off plastic muffler and plug the hole. Bet that would sound throaty too.
Landrover cars do not like them oil filters and land rover say not to use them thanks for the interesting video
Doing things the hard or most inconvenient way exercises the grey matter which is like going to the gym for your body but for your brain which may help keep dementia at bay as you get older.
We just replaced an Orielly sold MAF sensor on a 5.3 liter engine with an GM OE MAF sensor. The vehicle owner replaced it 6 times in a period of 12 months. Avoid using aftermarket sensors if any kind, they’re absolutely inferior.
I like your attention to detail
Yeah, I was waiting for you to tighten those upper strut nuts too. We shade-tree mechanics watch you like a hawk. 😊
On a related note, you showed that the bottom nuts were pinch-type locking nuts, but you threaded that last one all the way in with your fingers. What’s up with that?
Thanks for another excellent episode.
Great Job Ray
As it doesn’t look to be an improvement Couldn’t he have just painted the intake pipe red.A lot cheaper 👍🤓🇬🇧and still look fancy
Those weren't pinch nuts and I believe you ran out of threads on those bolts.
Ha ha I had my fingers on the keyboard when you went in for the strut nuts😂
funny you mention banks. i just ordered a banks intake for my 2002 silverado with the 5.3
It looks like the only performance feature of the chinesium unit is the red paint.
You always do great job. we need you inToccoa,Ga
So called "cold air intakes" are perfectly suited to turn a big increase in noise into an imperceptible horsepower gain.
