I bring you along in this video not just to show you a fix on a Nissan Versa with a P0705 but I show you the value of having a library of service data. In this case it was Identifix that gave me a silver bullet on a repair that likely would have taken some time to figure out.
-Enjoy!

Excellent video, however, I'm still not sure why a loose connector pin on a rear panel light assembly would cause the computer to not properly determine what drive mode was being selected.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars keith winterburn says:

it's not just the backfeeding power being picked up by the driver as the reverse signal, it depends if the reverse signal is actually being used by the transmission control module as the actual condition not the requested condition, so you get a conflict with more than one signal in which sets the code

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe Bledsoe says:

The things that are hidden in software / firmware. That make no sense and no one knows about. Great work. I have chased so many loose connections over my years. Some are fairly easy and most are real bears in the woods.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TommyMacDaddy1 says:

Me: How'd you fix the transmission?
Mr. O: Repaired the taillight connector.
    Me: Hmmm…what?

Always appreciate your in-depth review. Going off the beaten track like so many others do. And not doing what many shops do and fire the parts cannon at it.

Awesome video, just goes to show you that electricity does take the path of least resistance. It is wild the way a bad ground can mess with the flow of power to other components of a circuit.

That reminds me of a car I owned a while ago, it was an ED falcon but this problem covered the entire range from the EB2 to the ED falcon to LTD fitted with the Smartlock imobilation system, if the high mounted brake light globe blew (burnt out) it would activate the Smartlock system and you couldn't start the car.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars BigE says:

Water in the tail lights? I see this all the time . it's a backfeed through the tail lights. You can also get a transmission drivability problem because of water and the tail lights.

Bolts were loose someone replaced a bulb and didn’t connect it properly

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Coughlin says:

I heard you say kanueter valve and I cracked up.. I used that part name in the early 80s while working in the walmart service center. Our promotions gal came in with her new chevy nova ( the import one ) for a oil change. She was cute and I thought I'd give her a hard time. I told her that her kanueter valve failed and the main bolt keeping the engine together rusted out. She freaked out because she just bought the car. I let her rant for a bit and told her I was messing with her and the car was fine. I thought she was going to hit me. She finally laughed. Anyway nice find using your diagnostic skills.

As a professional tech, identifix is useful some times like you say grain of salt but also sometimes the motor specs have more published info the all data (somedata) can’t speak for pro demand as we don’t use that where I work

Now THAT was a strange one! I never would've guessed that in half a billion light years! Some great info there! I'm in that stuck-in-the-middle stage of my career. I don't get enough diagnostic work, or even automotive work in general to justify the expense. Now, some months I do – sometimes I'll get several per week … but at any moment it can go away for 2 months straight where I'm just doing tires and brake jobs, or just doing lawn equipment, chainsaws, and ultralight aircraft (How's that for a mix?), and won't need to look anything up. Wish they had an in-between service that's above DIY, but below full shop cost. Or a pay-per-view service like AllData. That's where I'm at! In diagnostic limbo, so to speak, lol. Great stuff as always, man!

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars uglysteve1 says:

Hope you can rely to this. What do you use to clean off green snot from a bundle of wires. This could be product promotion for you. Thanks, Steve

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jerry Hatrick says:

Not the first time a come across whacky shit like that in that tool.
I felt the same. Like wtf? Do taillights have to do with a transmission. And sure enough.

I'm onto different things now I have decided recently.
I'll always work on own and help a few friends when I have time.
But im at 50 moving onto my true calling. Food in the summer spring and fall and And rehab construction in the Winters. Into spring starting end of fall.
More Rewarding to me and more money less overhead.
I love these videos and all the channels like yours that will keep me up to date on this engineering disasters caused by engineers being dicks due to their wives cheating on them with a mechanic Hahaha

Good job there Eric definitely a uh a good fix and a good dad helper there. Dumb backfeed issues are really a nightmare at times and it pays to what things over on the old side to see if there is any issues other than the codes I've found at sometimes a non functioning piece or weird functioning piece will lead you to the fix so good job keep up the good work and pay this is all more money she is a good asset

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charles Dale says:

Funnily enough, had the same problem on a 1977 Morris Marina. What's that you ask? Doubt if they were popular in the US, but in 1979 I saw one in……Altoona Pa. ! Moral of story, don't overlook the bleedin' obvious. To that I would add, start with the simple stuff…. Thoroughly enjoy your content. Regards from UK

Plus, I held a spark plug on a generator and got a mate to crank it to check it was sparking as we couldn't see it.
Hell, it's not stupid if it works…

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars wayne smith says:

hi Eric between you and ray you pair have got me out of some sticky situations with repairs i had some thing similar a few days ago with my trailer lights what it turned out to be was a loose wire in the plug that had frayed and was touching other connectors 30 min later all fixed without a service call saved me some big $$$

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don W says:

That was a weird scenario and i would never have dreamed to look in the tail light harness. I am sure you would have found the issue with the identi fix but the time you saved by checking out what a prior fella had posted as his fix..thats priceless. And the drag test…you think of all the connections in a wiring harness and everything is just so but if there is one teensy bit not the same it causes problems. It really is in the details…sometimes finite details at that not to mention the 2 loose t/light nuts as well.. A great video Eric!!!

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mikespower says:

In 1973, I owned a Datsun 240Z it had a drivability problem I could never find, until the small ground wire between the back of the engine block and the body of the car became loose. When I noticed the wire became quite hot I tighten the bolts and the problem went away. On the 1973 Datsun 240Z the battery ground cable was grounded to the body of the car not to the engine.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Burdine says:

I so hate shops that SCREW people out of money… A BIG Thanks to guys that show videos like this and TAKE THE TIME to UPDATE sources like Identifx with stuff they were even too lazy to identify. Thanks, Great Video and a BIG THANKS to @Rainman Ray's Repairs for pointing me over to see ANOTHER Honest Mechanic who likes solving puzzles! "THE GOOD GUYS!"

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Soliman says:

there is corrosion that builds up on the board in the tail lights. I changed the range sensor/neutral safety switch first and to no avail, after I cleaned the corrosion off, didnt work. I replaced the whole taillight. BOOM FIXED. This is my aunts 2013 versa. There is a service bulletin on this fix. Insane how this is all wired.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Raul Pereyra says:

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daddyoh says:

Do not use identifix. Do not know any shops that use it either. That said the issue you had on that Nissan was quite unique. I could see how it could have led you down the rabbit hole. This addendum in Identifix surely led you down the path of a successful repair.

  53. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Glenn Orgill says:

the beauty of this was all you needed to do was look at the back lights to see they were messed up. you always want to do the easy diag first, then go deeper. nothing worse than doing 5 hours work just to find it could have been fixed in 5 minutes.

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Watson says:

  63. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marcel Linden says:

LMAO… You auto guys have it so easy. Plug in a scan tool and all the answers are there in front of you. Nothing like that in my industry where I need eight bits of expensive test equipment to make one basic operating change, but that's radio broadcasting for you…
But I'm still perplexed as to why a ground on a tail lamp fitting would affect the transmission position sensor…. Totally weird.!! … and I'm glad I don't own a Nissan.

Thank you, my uncle Carl told me one time he spent 3 days on a 82 or 72 jeep like vehicle with a misfire. As he was at his wit's end and was going to give the customer it back. He noticed a taillight out and thought he should at least fix it. After that he started it up to back out of the shop and yup No misfire! He had to know so he put the old light back in and yup misfire. Thank you for your videos and remembering my uncle Carl. Him and his brother Eric were both master mechanics. They taught me most of what I know. Now I watch great people like you.

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob Potocki says:

    Incredible:
    1. That diagnosis is pure karma
    2. It points to industry-wide engineering failure. That a loose tail-light connector could put an otherwise healthy vehicle out of service and make it undriveable is Bad Engineering. Its bad systems design. And to follow-up with no way to track the problem thru networked electronics (totally unnecessary for tail lights) is shameful. Entire service industry should call-out those ivory-tower engineers who are making money by early obsolescence. Rather die by rust than by corroded wiring harness.
Sorry for rant. It was a great diagnostic video. Watched 4 times. Trying to figure out how to acquire some of that diagnostic Karma. Thanks Eric!!!!!

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John E says:

Rainman Ray told me to come over to this channel to check out this episode.

  82. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dwight Elvey says:

Even older cars have a ground problems with rear lights. Most people don't know how to diagnose that either.
I'd suspect that the control module doesn't buffer the reverse switch lead, it just measures the voltage from the lamp. Since the lamps had no ground path, any time you hit the brake light or others, you drove the line to the reverse switch high, through the reverse lamp, with the bad ground.
I don't much care for rear light that are sealed units. These often have a PC board can can have connection issues or broken solders.
Another example of previous peoples problems saved me a minimum of $150. My dash would drop all the meters and light the airbag and seat belt lights only. If I slapped the dash things would come back on. It effected the back lights for the instruments as well as no turn signals. The headlights worked fine. My car is a ford Freestyle. There is a group on the web that post its problems and fixes. I found one that was a match. It said the uController, on the right side of the instrument panel's, crystal had a solder problem( Euro Solder, no lead! ). It would fracture and have bad contact. I took it apart, re-soldered it and not problem since. There were a several after market places that would service the cluster for $150. I suspect all they do for many of these is re-solder the crystal. I suspect it is like the three taps of the hammer, joke, it is just knowing where to tap it.
Another time my wife's Toyota's clock was flaky. The display would go out. Toyota wants $275 for the clock. I see people on the web offering $50 to fix it. Something that cheap means it has to be something simple. I open the clock and press on things a little. When I pressed on the large surface mount resistors, it would light up. Another case for Euro Solder. ( 10 years later it works fine after I re-soldered them )

  83. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeffrey Green says:

Another great video sir with great tips to avoid the shock and awe of the parts cannon! Three things…. one – it was nice to see the cross collaboration with Ray two – the innuendo gave me more than one good chuckle three – that guy that published the great tip needs a patreon account =)

I think Identifix gets a bad rep bc everyone points out the silver bullet allure BUT no one mentions the testing they layout for you as well when you looking something up. Its a lazy tech problem, not an Identifix problem

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeffery Godwin says:

Rainman Ray's Repairs sent me over. Thanks for the video.

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank says:

Hey Eric, I hope that the "parts" magazine is NY compliant! 10 parts or less for you buddy, otherwise, your pinko commie government will be paying you a visit. Good explanation of how valuable Identifix can be, it can also be a bunch of rope to hang yourself with.

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars D. B. says:

I am Swiss and I tell you that most of shops overhere make that opposit of you: they see diagnostic Codes and just exchange this parts what tells the Code! Instead when I ask for a issue, the answer is always the same: there are no diagnostic Codes storaged, your vehicle is in great condition!
I whish I could find over here a mechanic like you…😊

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Knox says:

this is vantastic youtube chan, great work learned a lot here

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 255Vicks says:
