In this video I have a look at a customers 2013 Chevy 1500 that came in with the Air Bag Warning Light on. Come to find out it is because we can't communicate with the supplemental restraints module. Let's see what we find.

All right folks, we got us a 2013. Chevrolet It's got the Big 53 uh service airbag lights on so I popped the hood so we can throw the battery maintainer on it. I've got the altel plugged in and doing its thing. We'll see what codes are in it.

We'll go from there. now. We do this part because it's freezing cold out and uh, the majority of stuff we work on. the key can't be left on for more than just a couple minutes or the batteries dead so we try to prevent that.

I know the furnace running is not ideal or the door dinging but uh, it's wicked cold out so you guys are going to have to deal usually I turn it off for you cuz for whatever reason on the YouTube It's insanely loud over in real life it's not something new with this microphone. I don't know. Uh so these trucks, uh, quite often previous experience with Cheret is the front impact sensors. um, short out and it usually has codes for that.

Isn't this? our? uh, safety inflatable restraints? That's interesting. When they're gray, it means they're not communicating I'm just looking here. it's yeah. I think that's uh I think s is your your safety inflatable restraint.

So interesting. We might have something different but I was going to say the front impact sensors on the radiator support usually swell up, crack, break and then that's it. So let's uh. instrument panel, vehicle control module.

uh let's go to report see what they say This is the instrument panel has a code lost com with restraints, control module and Vehicle communication interface has lost com with Str Control module. So we are right I'll be dip look at that something that's different I don't even I haven't ran across this yet. Supplemental Yeah, not safety supplemental. Inflatable restraints.

We can't talk to that little guy. Well, that's fun. uh Power Ground communication Mentioning that I've seen the front sensors swell up, crack and break I've never seen them short out per se or cause no communication. So I doubt that's our case.

but let's uh, look up a wiring diagram for this module and see where the fuses and stuff are for it. Um, this is a new one for me folks. I Printed this out a diagram. a lot of moving Parts on this little guy I was trying to figure out where it lives.

So the sensing diagnostic module of course you guys can't see it here cuz I can barely see it. but it says right there that it's under the driver's seat now just to try to identify a component I just looked under there I Didn't see any like slit in the carpet or any obvious way to get to it. Uh I thought they were under the center console personally. Uh, but regardless of that, she's a couple.

Pages Lots of sensors and of course you know airbags and tensioners and you know all kinds of stuff to go along with it. So she's a two-pager Uh, what we're concerned with first of all is the easiest thing to do. Uh Powers Well, Power I Guess that's all we can do I'm going to look here on the diagram, see where the power comes into the module. Looks like on this side, we got a couple fuses up there on top of the diagram at a glance I Don't see any here, so we're likely coming in to this side.
Uh, Fuse 4542. It's got some numbers except 66 with 53. so there's some discrepancies here that we have to kind of sort through and it looks like we have a power here. and then there's also.

uh, there's an ignition Source here. so looks like a couple fuses. so let me see which fuses they are. We're going to go right to the fuse box, see if they're good.

Uh, make sure they're good, then if they are, our next step is going to be going right to uh the module itself to see. do we have power? Do we have ground? and do we have communication there? Um, we're not looking at something that has the Comm wires taken down the communication wires because as you saw when we first, uh, read out the codes, everything else on that low speed can is talking and they're reporting against this. So if if the whole network was taken out, well, we'd have a lot lot more problems. So let me find of powers and grounds, we'll go make some checks.

All right we have here on the second page I Made myself some notes. Fuse 45 is a 15 amp and Fuse 40 is a 10 amp. The first one is a full-time battery and the other one is ignition feed. Why does my light look so dim? Must be just look dim so we'll get our lid off.

This little guy said underhood fuse box I'm going to see if we can't find them here. We're going to get our test light hooked to uh, battery ground. It's good to see the fuse box doesn't look like a Chia Pet some of these Chevrolets man I The fuse box really isn't sealed so it gets a lot of you know dirt and junk from the road even though the lid's on it. All right, we'll do that.

Make sure our equipment works, it does. We'll look under the gas side here. We're looking for Fuse 40 and Fuse 45. So there's 40.

So let's see how does this go box goes like that, right? Is that what we said We said Fuse 40 Ignition? Yes. Let's make sure that we have this oriented correctly. Fuse 40 is this 10 amp right here and that has power on both sides. Of course we're going to yank it out and make sure the pins on it look good.

and then Fuse 45 is right there. That's a 15 amp. Oops. Oh, let me make sure I have the well actually the 15 amp that is supposed to be the full-time power so we don't have to make sure the key is on.

Got nothing in there buddy. This whole half of the fuse box dead. That doesn't make sense. Let's make sure we're on Fuse 45.

Oh I Just heard a Dinger go off in there. 50 5145 Rear defogger relay and a couple fuses? Yeah, all right. Well, that's interesting. At least it doesn't look like we got to tear the carpet out of the thing cuz that's our ignition fuse.

40 over here on 45. Oh oh I just had to dig into that fuse a little harder. All right, it's about to get. Rizzle I don't even know what that means.
Oh boy, Gu shouldn't have to pull that hard to get a fuse out. What the what in the world is this fuse box? the Box don't look half bad, but I think this fuse is corroded. just want to see what that is I don't know if you guys can see. Oops.

Sorry buddy, sorry about that buddy. There's some kind of something here, but it's oh, you know what that is. So there's like a little piece of something in the box, but it's actually a piece of the fuse. It's like the bottom half of the fuse.

It's just like a little sliver of plastic kind of stuck here. Well, let's not make a mountain out of a mle hill there, dude. Um, I don't know what this 30 amp fuse is, but we're going to pull that cuz that doesn't that looks. Yeah, that thing's gross too.

Look at that. Oh boy, let me pull this 15. Who knows what that goes to? Oh yeah girl, you crusty. she is crusty down here.

We might get lucky. I Say that to myself every day. I Mean the pin tension still feels pretty good. We're going to check the individual pin tension on that.

Let's have a up close examination of this. Well actually, let's get a good 15 fuse first and see if we're if we're that lucky, if today's our lucky day, put down too hard and see if we restore. Communications All right, let's go see if we can talk to the airbag mod my Bago fuses. come on baby! Give us some good Juju Oh look at that.

No codes interesting. Can't believe the the front sensors on this thing are puffed right up. Bless your low heart Now she talks. Hooray! So the airbag light should be off on the inside.

However, we still have a bit of a problem. we want to kind of hit on the head here. It looks like it's just this little corner I'm going to pull them out. We're going to kind of clean this up with some deoxide, see if we can't head this problem off, and then we're going to dissect this thing a little bit.

Yeah the very bottom of that fuse has popped apart made have let corrosion in there and I believe our fuse is just corroded open. it's not blown. Now that we've done that, we're going to take and pull that out for your viewing pleasure. We're going to yank out this 30 because that's going to get replaced before we end up in the same situation.

Actually, look at that fuse. Can you see that it's It's black? like it's been. uh, you know. Fring Sitting there kind of sizzling? perhaps? I don't know what it runs, but it's going to get replaced along with this 15 amp that it just dropped and this one here that we just put in.

so so that's pretty interesting. Uh, not much we can really do about this folks. except uh, a little bit of deoxide Def five I won't even read it to you. We're going to spray right down in the Box here.

Let it kind of do its magic. We're going to use a non-metallic brush kind of scuff around up here on the female end of the terminals and that's about the best we can do short of completely disassembling the fuse box if that makes sense to you. I'm try to kind of head this off. it's has some corrosion cleaner in it and whatnot and what have you? I Do have the key off, let me grab another 15 amp fuse.
Let's grab a 30 amp fuse and perhaps we can take a razor blade, kind of cut this open and see what we see in there. That'd be kind of fun, huh? Nothing says fun like blood all over the workbench. So let's see if we can take and open this up without bleeding profusely. What's up Miss though Looking for a box? H Story of my Life I Got one over here.

Right size depends on if it's the size you need. Stick around though. we might see some blood. You're going to bleed.

Oh yes, Ma'am Oh boy. this doesn't look sketchy at all, does it? We're trying to look inside the fuse without destroying the fuse because destructive? Well, No. I mean without just like ripping it in half like a caveman. can't even see what you're doing.

They they're going to see the Money Shot once. I slice my main artery. That's all they want to see. They don't care about this part.

Yeah, we do. We want to see the process. What the heck is going on there? Oh, this is this is we made a hypothesis and look. it's true.

I'll wait till you see this. You're here for the climax. Misses out the Money shot we call it. see.

Inside there, the fuse is corroded open. Oh wow, wow, isn't that wild? Doesn't that just turn your crank? Wow! I'm so excited. All right. That's as close as a zoom up as I can get you folks.

but you can see over here on the left Edge that the fuse is corroded open is an that fun. Let's see if we can't just give that a little push away there so everybody can see it. I'm not looking in the viewfinder so I don't know what you can see but we can clearly see that it is disconnected because of corrosion so that's fun right? huh? Who's having fun? Let's open up the 30. Amper oh oh boy it's nasty.

It's Curious he wasn't really having any other problems, but wait till you have a look at this. Philly oh it's because this one is not open circuited. It's just all black and sizzly. I'll lean this up against it so we can zoom in on it and you guys can see where it's been cooking.

You can smell what The Rock is cooking and that's what it looks like inside your 30. Amper I don't have my glasses on so I can't really see there myself I guess I could look in my viewfinder. it's like glasses. you know to make it black and sizzly it would have to have a connection that was arcing I would think or hard to say but yeah that that one looks all intact minus the corrosion at least across the fuse portion of it.

but looking at the Blackness I would say it's definitely has gotten hot. It made it a lot easier to cut through cuz it was kind of melted so I just touched it with a razor blade and the outside kind of broke off. so nothing to really do with his uh, complaint, but perhaps stopping a future problem here. So let me finish cleaning up that box.
get a couple fuses for us. but yeah, I guess fuses can go bad without blowing I'm going to see if I can finish scraping off that little piece of fuse that's stuck there. If not, we're not going to worry about it too much. just a little piece of plastic it seems to be kind of bonded to the Box All right good.

the furnace shut off for you least for a couple minutes when single digits outside. she runs it awful lot. Let's see here. Well, that's as good as we can get it.

Let me, um, come on you little sucker. Oh there it goes. Fell through. All right, let me get some peanut butter some Ultra seal I call it peanut butter.

kind of looks like peanut butter. We're going to scoop some of that out slobber up on our leads here. try to Salvage it if we can, put that down in there and we'll do this relay even though it doesn't seem to really have a problem currently. Now as good as it's going to get, fella, get some on the blades of our fuse, stick that in there.

make sure you got the 15 going the right way. Could you imagine? Could you imagine having that going the other way. Like these ones over here? and that one and those other ones. oh this one.

You can't even read the 30 on that baby's down in there. Put that so we can read it. That baby's right there. That's it for this.

Chevrolet folks, uh, we cleaned the corrosion out the best we could, gooped up the fuses, stuck them in, identified the problem, and moving on with life. Uh, and that'll be a good enough fix until it becomes worse if it ever does. Uh. I've seen a lot of these fuse boxes get corroded uh way.

Way Beyond What this one is. It seemed to really be isolated to that little section. So and then whatever that 30in fuse ran. uh, who knows, but we probably prevented a a future problem there.

30 amp fuse usually runs a bunch of other circuits, but I don't know could be the rear window. def fer fires I know, don't know, Don't care. What I do care about is that you guys go in that comment section. leave a question in the comments, find it on the insty in the Facebook Just remember viewers, if I can do it, you can do it.

Thanks for watching He.

I got a 08 Silverado 1500. The 30 amp fuse controls the rear window and mirror heaters. The cruise control is controlled by this fuse. I had a problem with the fuse was burnt up and also burnt the case. I cleaned everything up with cleaned and no problems since. I did not have the puss problem just the fuse burnt. I have a friend of mine had the same exact problem on his 08. Thanks for all your knowledge you share.

Funny story. I chased down an electrical issue to corrosion in connector for a bulkhead module. I sprayed it down with electrical cleaner (I’ve yet to find deoxit). Anyway, I sprayed it, scrubbed it with nylon brush then sprayed it again. I then plugged in the connector. Snap! I had a little flame up. I forgot to hit it with shop air and that spray must be alcohol based and I must’ve had the key on. Oh well, no harm done but lesson learned.

As ab owner of a vehicle,i would be pulling every fuse and relay ,checking them and cleaning all and applying the gunk to help longevity.
Diing that is check for an owner ,and its something that any vehicle owner should be able to do .
Its really sad to think most have the attitude that its ten years old and the truck or car will be just Junk because of rust ,so prevention is not high on priority

When you pulled out the Deoxit I knew you were my repair "Spirit Animal". It too is my go to chemical I swear by on all electronics. A while ago I also found out that G-sensor in the grill for the airbag doesn't care if it is a horizontal impact or a vertical one. I dropped a 24 inch breaker bar across the frame it attached to while trying to release the serpentine belt tensioner. Had a swell time replacing a $60 part in -15F temps in Montana. On the ground. In the Snow. In my bare feet.

I kinda line the background noises, but they're not as cool as Ray's old employer's phone. Doodleeee Dooo

That furnace is not that loud. And I don't even hear the door dinger unless you say something about it. I think some people have to have something to b** about. They're like a nag you take away their nag they find a new one. Now it's cold keep that furnace running. If they don't like it tell them to talk to me 😂😮🎉

The furnace isn't that load. Just a bit of background white noise. Don't worry too much about it.

"leave a question in the comments" Is the test light you're using high impedance?
i use the power probe exclusively, for many, many reasons. bottom line, it's just faster.
fun fact, it has a built in 7.5 amp circuit breaker for testing without eating through fuses.
have you run into a blown fuse with power on both sides, but one side slightly lower V? the volt meter function pays off there. you pull fuses to visually check, but i avoid losing keep alive memory when ever possible.

I found that corrosion on a 2000 dodge grand Cherokee on the feed for the Ox sensors heater (previous mechanic quote it for 4 new ox sensors….it had the fuse box mounted above the wheel well – not sure if had a gasket underneath- but salt got there) and the black burn fuse on on those fake fuses that were around few years ago, they will melt the wire and not burn, I am sure there is a lot of these around, it was cheap part. Thank you, great take on your skills.

I had a fuel pump once that would quit soon after startup or sometimes after it was running for awhile. was always working while testing. Replaced fuel pump with no change then decided to look at fuse. It had a mall crack in it that when it got warm it would separate then when cold would reconnect. It was acting a little like an incandescent light blinker.Replaced fuse and all was well.

My 2006 Chevy I got from my dad, the fuse box was a mouse house underneath and the top was their bathroom. It amazes me how mice find the most inconvenient place on a vehicle to make their home with all the space in a garage.

Eric, I have a small concern that the "peanut butter" you put on will act as a conduit and bypass the current past the fuse? Nice

Have you ever tried a spot sand blaster with ultrafine blasting sand I've used mine for many many years. Cleaning these connectors. Fuse connectors plug connectors. I had to start many, many years ago because we didn't have weatherpack. Plugs in all that fancy dancing stuff we have now. But I still have it I use it at least once a week works beautiful

Noise suppression promotes fan noise. Just like it does voice frequencies. I learned this 30 years ago when it first came out. Bought the headphones for flying and such. Tried them on the ship I was working. Sure, it suppressed the engine and machinery noise, but made me aware of every fan and blower. And when I took the headphones off, I was now aware of both frequency of noises.

That's why the furnace fan is so apparent on video.
