Howdy Folks Good day to you! Welcome back! Glad you guys are here! I know I'm super glad to be here. We are returning into this uh, this part two of a 2007 Saturn with the Honda engine. In the last video, we were on a parts hold uh for this uh, actuator assembly located inside of the dash over there. I was supposed to take the dash out to get to this, but I managed to get my uh, uh, my extremities up into the hole all the way in the corner.

at the bottom of that a pillar to get the old unit. uh, disconnected. Uh, this thing had a clicking actuator so when you selected it from defrost down to your floor vents as the actuator would swing, it ran across a stripped gear inside of it and it was going click click click click click click click click click click. and it was highly annoying.

So I managed to dig this. Dig this thing out. Uh, found out we were on a parts hold because this thing was a day away. So we moved on and ended up uh, fixing, uh, some issues with the rear drum brakes on this particular take unit.

Today the new component has arrived. so I'm going to make an attempt to get this thing back into position. It's going to be no easy feet because I've got to line up the uh, the flat spots on the driven side of this unit and then get this thing properly oriented inside of the dash and then hopefully get the thing bolted back in. Now, it's going to be very critical that I get all three of the Fasteners installed, one here, one here, and one here.

If you don't put in all three of them, these things will move around and bind up and they'll ultimately break off because there is a quite a bit of stress that happens or is uh is imposed rather uh on these particular types of units. So you got to have all three of the things connected. Uh, let's uh, let's go do some contouring and see what I can do about getting this unit put back together. Uh.

Additionally, as I mentioned this was come here. This was a uh or is a Part Two video. If you want to see the Part One video or finish the Part One video, it was a little long. Just check the links down inside of the video's description at the top of the comment list and I'll also stick one more link right up here in the upper right hand corner.

Uh, all of those will take you back in time to the part One video of this uh particular s All right. Hats off to you! Saturn Shameless Self-promotion Rainman Rais Repairs.com Check the link down below for customized merchandise. Okay, so now that we got the Shameless self-promotion out of the way, let's get down inside this hole here and get uh, this actuator up into position. Hopefully fingers crossed.

Let's uh, see if I can do this. Okay, here we go again. let's see how this is going to work. So I've already got my flashlight stuck up inside of uh, this Dash compartment here.

Oh I'm not thrilled about doing this a second time. not at all. but we got to do what we've got to do here. Oh fun times.

Okay, so let's get that cable out of the way here. This feels like it's going to be harder than the first time I don't even know what I'm doing Okay. Move the light out of the way some. let's see how we're going to figure this out.
All right here we go. I'm coming in h no way. look at that. a little dark in there.

but think I got it right right into the correct position position first. try no way. Well yeah, that's in I got it in. Cool oh goody.

So now I'm going to reach back in here and time to get the three Fasteners in position. So difficult. Phase one is complete. Let's see how these bolts are coming in here.

That could not have gone any better I Don't think but getting those Fasteners up there. that's my my next difficulty here. You guys fell down I got you? No worries I Can't even see or feel these bolts or the bolt holes. Rather okay there.

there's one hole. Let's get the oh sh I dropped I Just dropped the screw that's not okay. Need a magnet? Let me go find some kind of magnetic device here to try to recover that screw that I dropped here we go. Magnet on a stick.

Epic failure. Okay. magnet on a stick. Let's get you extended.

Try to fish around for wherever I dropped that Fastener It didn't go far. It's right up in there. I'm just going to pull the actuator out. Maybe it'll fall out.

No, it won't Uhoh I'm in trouble now fellas that instant. Ah, there it is I heard it hit the ground. Okay, so round two, let's try it again. Reaching in I can feel the stud okay, actuators back in I think got that one more time with the uh this bolt here, feeling around, feeling around.

Okay, there's the hole. feel the hole with my my middle finger and the Fastener is in the hole. Hope you guys can see what's going on in there. It's a little dark, dingy and dark coming in with the little ratchet.

There it is. here we go. Oops I Just turned the ratchet around backwards. Yeah, must have flipped the switch by mistake.

Come on now. Okay, that one tight. There we go. Okay, one is done.

Let's get the other two set up here. These ones are going to be a little bit harder cuz they're higher up. Uh I've lost it there. it is Okay, that one's this is the hard one.

Oh man oh man. come on. Oh yeah baby. I got it.

that one's in I felt it Go in that's it. Right there. Okay, yeah, so let's see here. let's put some more in here.

Maybe that will help us see what. Uh, what? we cannot see. Hope that works. Okay, okay right here's the there's the bolt.

Uhoh Bolt is now. not straight there it is. Get your head out of there. No, that's not funny.

Who's that in there? That's not good. Yeah, well. the dash is still in here too. Who is a oh there you are.

Yeah, no, that means you're into the evaporator P you? well I'm doing a blendor. oh or that yeah, blendor actuator and I'm supposed to pull the dash out. but I don't want to here. we go.
tell me it's turning. Please turn you. Oh you, you better be turning I hope it's going yeah I think we're getting it. Be nice if I could see it's not turning.

Nope. I'm off center. So bad that's not not what I wanted to be doing here. that Fastener is sideways.

See there it is right there. I think that's it. Now that might be it. How's it feel? Yeah, that's going in straight.

That's straighter. Are we straight is kind of. This is this is not fun guys. Should have been an astronaut.

Let tell you what, That's the hardest one to get in too. Um, there's really nothing to do except kind of just push through it. That's all I got. literally just push I can't tell if I'm making progress.

All I can do is continue to turn this ratchet and hope it gets tight. There we go that's feeling good and now it's not feeling good I'm try to see yeah, it's going in I can't see the head of the Fastener anymore. Okay, we roll around in a circle. switch arms Maybe Oh yeah, buddy.

I'm not coming out of here. Come on you stinking thing. Tighten up almost there. That's it.

That one's it. It's tight. Clicked yeah. Beautiful.

Now up. hello I See you guys Woo! Okay, one more we have one more or this one. Okay, going back up this last one here. feeling it I feel the bolt hole putting the bolt in the hole I can't feel the end of it.

That's not it. I'm trying to put it in the wrong hole here. that's not not the one I'm looking for. okay I need to flip around, lay back down and try to look get my head like right here and then look up in there and see if I can't see that last.

uh, last hole for this one. Man oh man, let's see what we can do here. You you guys go back over there. I don't even know where that other hole was supposed to be.

it's I think it's higher up somewhere up there. Uh can you guys see? Let me me put this all the way up Try to use the camera to see what I'm trying to look at here I think it's on. Yeah, it's that one. See that right there little? Notch that's the one that's the Droid that I'm looking for.

let's try to reach. Oh baby Yeah! I need the camera here so I can see cuz I can't get my eyeballs on the situation at hand, but the camera can see cuz its eyeballs are in a different location. That's it right there. Goty right there.

That's it. That's the. that's the spot. Yeah, you talk too much I can't I just can't Okay I need to flip around and switch hands again.

my left hand just didn't have doesn't have it here. we go. Come on, come on there it is. It's tight.

Okay rolling around again I need to get uh, the connector connected. Let's see how we're going to do this. Where is the hole on the actuator right here? That's it. Oh yeah, it's in so let's go test it out.

A lot of moving around there, sorry fellas, but my hat back there we go. Okay, so we're on floor vent. let's go up to Defrost I hear the actuator actuating we are defrosting back to the floor and we're good here. All right here.
Let me run you guys back up into there and you can take a look at that actuator as it runs. I Don't know if you can see much, but we can at least. uh, kind of view the side of this unit. Where is it? There she is.

You're going to watch that little metal thing right there. Watch that, you'll see it turning. Yep, there she goes and back the other way. No clicking noises here.

Okay, got it. That's a success. Cool. So climb myself right out of here.

one more time. My light and I got another light jammed up in there too. There we go. So now that that's complete, let's go ahead and get.

uh, we get all these panels put back on that's bright. Ah yeah, that's pretty bright there. Yeah. I Need to get these panels back together and this operation here will be complete.

Is that was like that Okay dash pad that's back in position here that keeps the ultraviolet rays from sunny Florida from cracking your blast. DEC Okay, let's get some bolts back together inside of this unit. right here. It's the 10 that I removed that way.

Click. Okay, so out of these panels I Believe this one was the most difficult to remove, probably because my order of operations wasn't accurate. There is a little stud that passes through that hole right there which happens to be that guy right there. So I want to go ahead and get that thing in position.

First feel around the back side of it. It's not in enough. It's in but not all the way there we go. Slide that up into position here.

I Heard some clicks so that tells me things are lining up. That's good and good here. Let's just start getting some of these Fasteners out of the way I'll do the ones where I I know where they go that I didn't have to remove. Well, if I was pulling the dash out I was going to have to remove them, but I elected to not do that.

There we go. In hindsight, I probably could have gotten away without taking any of this stuff off. Tell you the truth. No, yes.

gentle clicks. good. Okay. next I Want to put not that one.

We'll get this guy in position here. So we've got our connector for the door switch so we will make that connected right? Okay goes there. We slip this past little trim piece here, the door seal, click all that into position and then we've got these little plastic Guys these have to be reverse clicked I guess that's that's how I describe it. We had to push them in to release them.

so now we got to push them out to re-release them. see that and then we can get them in the hole and then push them flat again. highly complicated. It's kind of a like a Toyota technology Toyota likes these types of connectors or Clips Okay, line that up will will you in? Get in there there we go.
Good Good Good Good good. All that's good I Like it got the little door latch mechanism thing for the glove box door that I also did not have to remove. spin you round round round round round. Okay, that's good to go I like that.

um next I guess I can put the the kick panel and door sill trim back on so that's going to clip in down here. Here we go. We'll start clipping in the rear cuz that's the part that came off last. Get in there, there we go.

Carpet's in the way. Hey let's rotate those tires as well please fellas. Okay yeah yeah, there's some chopping on the front so just do a front to back rotation and then um, we'll have to relearn the TPMS sensors cuz they're all position sensitive but we will do that. uh, once it's on the ground.

Thank you thank you thank you. Okay oh there goes a screw there. there goes one there that was Jesus by the way, he's working here part-time He also works at the part store so that's a good ass set to have around guy that knows his parts and knows how to get parts click. Okay, that Gu is all good to go.

We're good here and look here. I Have no more Fasteners except for this one which goes back here I Knew there was a straggler. There's always one one right there. Good.

Uhoh fail. Forgot there's another one. There's always two. always two.

Beautiful. Okie does. Next, we'll get the glove box back in. Remember the little hinge pins so we'll get her lined up here.

Stick those pins all the way through. you. Going to go? Yeah, it's going to go. I've just got to get it lined up properly here.

Mhm. All right. that one went this other one. It's not lined up perfect.

It's not going to go in. This is problem there. it is. Got that one.

that one's fully seated. This one's mostly fully seated. But that's fine cuz everything's a hammer. Fully seated.

achieved. So let's get the checks in position here. That's the stopper to prevent this from coming down too far. When you open it, put that in and turn it.

that locks in. and then one more door check over here on this side. There we go. Okay, that is all correct according to my eyeballs.

Door closes, Everything's lined up. This is good. No more. Fasteners Let's get the tools out of here.

Oh, get the pen back in there. That's good. Beautiful. All righty.

That operation is complete. I Need to get the air in the tires set up on this, Move my truck out of the way and we're going to go out back in the gravel and make sure that these drum brakes are no longer locking out. All righty. let's go ahead.

we'll back this unit out. actually. First, let me check my parking brake adjustment. Make sure that we're good.

We're in. Reverse Flo off the brake parking Brake's not. uh, releasing. Oh I'm dumb I was in neutral.

There we go. Parking Brake, We're in. Reverse This is good. Okay, so the drums are actuating.
This is good. Now, one thing about drum brakes: If you go in reverse and step on the pedal real hard, the drums or the shoes rather will come out and contact the drum and they're going to turn slightly when they turn as an assembly. What that will do is allow that little adjuster lever, that little L-shaped guy to click the star wheel on that spreader bar And that's how the rear brakes automatically adjust. Now, you can't adjust them that way too far because once they're adjusted it to the proper specs, uh, they will no longer be able to rotate as much.

So what we do is when we back up. we just kind of step on those rears and that's going to get that rear adjustment to kick into place. And that's how you automatically adjust your rear drums. Okay, let's go ahead and get this thing back onto the gravel.

Over Yonder And uh, we'll do some reverses and some forwards to make sure we don't have that lock up scenario. So let me get to a good Runway situation here. A lot of cars in the lot today. Yeah, that guy is coming out.

That person's coming in. This person over here. she's leaving. Say hi darling Hi! Ah good job you made your appearance on the video today.

Yay! he I'm forcing her to work and be in the videos someone said that said I was forcing her to be here backing up. Okay, let's go forward and see if this thing is wanting to lock up. Didn't feel any lock up here, didn't hear any either. Back it up again.

trying again Is the rear locking up? Nope. Set all right I think we got it. It's good to go. All right I think we got it.

The only lock up I'm feeling is if I stand on it in the gravel but a normal stop we are good to go. So I'm going to go ahead and give this a once around the block I'm a normal test drive not going to take you guys with me simply for the sake of video time. So I'm going to go ahead and close this video out right now. I Will do such things as always by thanking each and every one of you guys for watching this video.

Certainly hope you enjoyed this part. Two follow-up video. Uh, if you did enjoy this video, please feel free to let me know about that in the comment section down below. The creation of Saturn was a weak attempt to compete with Japanese vehicles. In the end, GM purchased Honda’s V6 but that was a short lived attempt. GM began using its infamous Dexcool antifreeze which caused problems either the Honda engine. Sadly, Saturn disappeared due to the typical GM mentality of quantity vs. quality.

There were 4 actuators on my 2010 impala. I only replaced 3. In addition to the huge pain it was to do, also becoming a contortionist, my tools were expanded, adding a tiny ratchet.
This crap made me despise chevy, traded thie impala in for the truck I bought.(also a chevy. Came with a completely useless console-zero storage that I replaced with one that has MORE than enough. )

Watching this video I had two thoughts. First, I've been under the dash on a few of my vehicles so I understand the pain. Second, it sounds like it was the actuator for the windshield defrost that was failing. If so, as someone from Wisconsin where the recent polar vortex meant lows around -15F, the irony of the DEFROST actuator failing in Florida amuses me. I know that function is just as important when the windshield fogs up in humid weather, but as the saying goes "What's in a name?".

Ray, as others have also said, your self control is impressive. I'm sure that doing such a frustrating and uncomfortable job would have inspired a stream of loud foul language from me, as that is exactly what happened the previous times.

I used to secure the bolts with electrical tape around the bolt and the actuator but the bolts don't go all the way threw. They won't fall and then install the actuator in position with the bolts already taped, then the only thing I had to do was tight them up half way then remove the tape and tight them al the way!

But I struggle a couple of time like you did until I decided to tape them.

One note of caution. I have found hair combs toys, soldiers, and plastic Ariel, among other things that fell down through the defrost vent into the AC heater unit, resulting in damage to the actuator Motors. I started using a borescope to look into the vent to see if there were any foreign objects inside the heater before I changed the actuator. If foreign objects are inside the unit blocking the door, it becomes necessary to remove the dash and take the heater unit completely apart . It's never good to have to do a job twice .

I have decided that if I ever have to fix anything under the dash I am pulling the seats out.

That Saturn steering wheel looked just like my 08' Cobalt, guess Saturn and Chevy were the same?

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @thomaslyon2112 says:

Knowing the difficulty in R&R that actuator, why did they make it out of junk plastic?

  51. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @victorsantamaria100 says:

    Good job, sir

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @ljerry8440 says:

i was a dealership tech on these cars. It brings back terrible memories. Truly, a POS.

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @danielwirth8388 says:

Good thing this wasn't live stream like video chat. You would have been yelled at by multiple people stating up down and just a bit more.😅😅

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @tomblobasjamescarymccollum1740 says:

🎉🎉 I've seen your under hood man hoist that suspends you over the engine. Why don't they make a similar "stretcher" for working under dashes? The world needs more back saving devices.

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @jeffkuipers1030 says:

i did one in my 2009 ford ranger and i hope to never do that again. i feel your pain

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @thewausaudude says:

Reminds me of doing the blend door actuator in my Marquis. Even with the dash pulled back the rear-most fastener was in a tight spot between the box and the firewall. I bought a small ratcheting wrench specifically for the task and it went a click at a time. Took forever but just like you suggested I wanted all the fasteners back in place on that actuator.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @1973chevycar says:

One more thing: how in the hell do you remember where ALL the parts go to? I'm sure that I'd at least forget 1 of them as to where they go. BRAVO GOOD SIR.

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @1973chevycar says:

That's why you get the BIG BUCKS!! But a well deserved Big Bucks. You sir EARNED that paper.

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @torky8151 says:

I would like to say kudos to you good sir…. that was my favorite video of yours so far… a lot of respect for the under the dash work… that was not easy and you destroyed it like a BOSS.. my arms are killing me after watching that!!! Appreciate all you do!!! Thank you!

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @badazz2969 says:

I miss these old gm cars dash repairs that call for removing the dash usually didn't need dash removal but today…a way different story, youll most definitely be removing the dash. I left the car world 6 months ago to become an ag tech and im not going back i get paid like a king and the work is much simpler but i still like rays content. The only way id justify working on these steel coffins for a living again is if i had my own shop i got burned out and hated cars with a passion.

A couple of years ago, I was at Auto Zone. I bought a little 1/4" ratchet with a 2 1/2 " handle. Just to put one of those in a 2010 Impala. I now use it all the time.

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @TXCherokee says:

Raymond. My back hurts just watching you upside down in that tiny car

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @rkochair says:

I have to say Ray that being a viewer of many youtube videos for personal DIY projects and such, I am always wanting to see everything I can with whichever video I am watching to the point of getting frustrated when I can't see what's going on, BUT you my friend have mastered the art of letting me/us see virtually everything you are doing and quite often we see more than you do. So for that sir I Thank You. Side note: Sometimes I even catch myself saying "No Ray a little to the right" or "It's almost in, just a bit more". So great job with the camera positioning – giving us the best seat in the house.

  79. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @kell8603 says:

Maybe a wet & dry vac for the leaves so it doesn't go all over the shop…

  80. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @kell8603 says:

Seems wrong that you didn't spray something down with brake clean… 😀

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @johnt.848 says:

Actually the rear drum brake adjustment is done by reversing and pulling the handbrake as it is attached directly to the adjustment arm which moves the star wheel.

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @richardsinclair3037 says:

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @maxxmich says:

Working under/behind the dash is the worst. It seems that the right angle doesn’t exist.

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @gryfandjane says:

I own a ‘15 Ford Fiesta ST. One of the longest threads on our forum involves failure of the blend door actuator, the usual case of plastic parts failing under normal use. I had mine replaced under warranty, but I think there was a service bulletin on them as well. Sort of makes you wonder how many other models are affected by flimsy actuators like these.

  95. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @Jonathan-mp32x says:

Where did the previous video of this Vue go Ray? When you pulled the actuator out? Can't find it now.

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @mikehunt908 says:

Well done Ray . I have a fused right wrist so getting into areas like that is no fun at times , in fact I got my forearm stuck in a door whilst replacing a window regulator
