All right folks, welcome back. We got us a 2005 Buick It's a little saber. It's got the Big 38. perhaps the best engine General Motors ever made one of them.

We'll say uh, engine lights on. Naturally, it's got evap codes. uh McCoy's already hooked a computer to it says it has a large leak code. uh.

The customer told me that he already did the filler neck and the gas cap apparently. Uh, and then of course, lights still on. Inspections overdue. same story, different day.

So he's going to get it on the lift. Uh, we haven't done anything else. We're going to look at some data on a scan tool and uh, seal off the vapor system. So your EVAP system on any car is basically fuel vapor recovery.

Uh, stores it in a charcoal canister and burns it back through the engine, not releasing the hydrocarbon into the atmosphere, thereby saving the polar bears and the planet. So here is as far as we've gone. You got the four classic 455 large evap leak uh in the engine controller. So we're going to pop into the engine controller and we just want to look at, uh, fuel tank pressure.

It's going to be the main pit here, so a b of emissions. We want to make sure that our pressure sensor is working and it is. so uh, GMS 1.4 to 1.6 is usually what we expect. We just did a video the other day and we had 1.3 on an aftermarket sensor.

but basically it's at atmospheric pressure all right, so we can hear it. We can hear it clicking back there. but we also should know from other videos. Just because the valve clicks doesn't mean it seals.

Um, what we're going to do now is with it closed. it's pretty cold. It's only like 10 out. I Don't know if the fuel in the tank is volatile enough just pulling it in to start to build pressure.

It doesn't look like it is. Typically when you close the valve that the tank will start to build pressure. Uh, unless there's a gross leak. Um, or the temperatures aren't right.

But this one's not building any pressure. So we're going to open that back up. We're going to throw an exhaust pipe on it. and then we're going to turn on the purge valve and see if we can pull the tank into a vacuum.

We're going to go to the purge valve. All right. What we're going to want to watch is fuel tank pressure. Uh.

either pit we going. Oh I Hear it clicking? Okay, yep. so it is drawn the tank into a vacuum. So our purge valve works.

Okay, so that's that's good. So we'll shut that back off and then let's pop out of here. We're going to go if they have I don't know if they have Purge and seal? Yeah, they do on this one. So this will tell us now that we know our canister vet valve clicks.

Our purge valve works. It's going to go, not bending. We're going to try to put a vacuum on the tank. We'll let this build up to about 2 and 1/2 volts and then we're going to seal it off.

All right. We SE peed it off. Boy, it looks like it's uh, sealing pretty well. That's interesting.
I would I expected the I expected that to Decay quite a bit faster. All right. Well, that's interesting. Appears to be holding vacuum.

Um, go ahead and take the gas cap off for me. McCoy would you so McCoy's going to pull the gas cap off? Let me. uh. just a second before you do that.

McCoy I'm going to build it back up. Okay, go ahead. he's going to take the cap off. We should watch that go right back to atmospheric pressure.

Tell me when it's off. Okay, yeah, he took the cap off. Okay, that's good. You can go ahead and shut the car off so you could see.

When he pulled the cap, it went right back to atmospheric pressure as we would expect. So, uh, turn the key back on Mcoy if it is. and then so what we're going to do now because this is indecisive. whether or not it actually has what they would determine as a gross leak.

Um, there's nothing in service data that tells you you know the rate of Decay cuz that's determinant on you know how much fuel's in it outside temperature. You know quite a few factors will will change how fast. uh, the vacuum decays in the tank. So what we'll do Now We're going to turn the vet valve on, we're going to hook up the Aoka, Smoka, and we're going to see if the system is indeed sealed.

The purge valve lives right under here on the intake. What's that? Oh I Just tell them where the where the purge valve lives. Uh, oddly enough, nobody has touched it. That appears to be the OG Uh, back here in the corner is where we can tap into the purge.

B Uh, So some of my thoughts are, well, what if we if we hook this up and the system's completely sealed? Uh, you know what? What's the problem? Problems Intermittent at that point, these are very failure prone. Uh. I'm actually kind of shocked that it works. That would be my guess if I had to load up the parts.

Cannon But we'll see if it's sealed first. Uh, with the smoke machine, we're going to unhook the purge line right from the purge valve. You can. It's got this funny metal clip on it.

not the haha funny kind either. Okay, now we're going to get our smoke machine quick connect kit by. Red Line Open this little guy up and then we're going to find the appropriate size. which is this one here? We're going to plug that right in.

We could choose to, uh, use one of these and go back on. uh, the Shraer valve. But then if you got a shraer valve that's leaking, how would you know? Plus, this is a little easier to get to. Let's see here we hook up a ground for the boka smok.

She light up. y all right? Go ahead and hit. We'll make sure she smokes first. It's like a hookah.

You want to put your lips on that one though? All right, let's go back to the scan tool. canister vent valve is not in. you can see we're building pressure. if we open it up, drops back to atmospheric.

we'll kick that back on. We're not building pressure at a rapid rate, so we likely do have a real leak. We're going to let the system fill full and then we'll uh, do some investigating, see where it can be coming from. The gas cap was off, folks.
The Evoca smoker has a flow gauge on it so we can see if the system's sealed flow gauge will drop all the way to the bottom eventually. But we'll let this sit here for several minutes to fill the tank and see what happens. So we've waited quite a while folks. this stage right here, but we probably did 15 minutes.

Definitely should be uh down by now. Uh, car is pretty rough underneath. She's super Rusty uh we went underneath it. don't smell any fuel underneath.

Usually evap leaks are pretty easy to smell. So previous experience tells me these, uh, fuel pumps, uh, tend to crack on the top. the ring gets Rusty and breaks top the fuel pump. Unfortunately for us, there's an access panel in the trunk.

uh McCoy's going to get that off and then we're going to see if there's a you know, leak on top of the tank. like I say the whole bottom structure of this car is completely rotted. I mean so much so it's rotted right through the trunk. Too bad, so he's going to have to get a lick them stick them in another shot.

but we'll at least fix the uh engine light. But yeah, the whole structure of the car. this whole left hand structure is just rotted right out of it. We Spritz her down, get everything wet up here.

Usually you'll hear them hissing I mean even just a tiniest little hole, you can hear him whistling yeah, I'm not seeing any bubbles. where's the float gauge on that? MCO is about halfway down so I'll make sure we definitely have pressure in the system the way down say there's only like three lines below. Oh okay, yeah, so there's plenty of pressure in there. All right.

Well, we're barking up the wrong tree here folks. We're going have to see if we can't isolate part of the system to find out where this leak is. My fear is though, that this isn't the leak that setting his coat. I Think he's got a a purge valve that's working intermittently or a cancer vent valve that's not sealing all the time.

That's all back together. What we're doing now is this is the canister vent valve back here. It's the filter for it I've got it open I've got the smoke machine on it. We're going to shut it off to make sure that it actually seals perfectly.

So I just shut it off and I want to make sure all the smoke completely stops. Make sure it doesn't just keep sending out this little Trinkle of smoke here where it appears to I'm going to monitor this for a little while. All right, so that appears that it it does seal. So what we're going to do now is we want to see is the leak in the canister line area or if it's in the tank.

So what we're going to do is we're going to isolate the tank. We have to be very careful on this car. It's super super rotted. Uh, as far as touching lines and stuff.
So I'm going to see if I can't get the tank line here unhooked and get these release tabs. Okay there. if we can get this off, see it should be smoke coming out of there little bit of smoke juice. We're going to plug this off and now we're only putting smoke in the canister coming out into the canister vent valve which we know is sealed.

So I'm going to get a little rubber plug or something, go over this and then we're going to let the smoke machine fill it up and see if that drops the gauge down to zero so that's capped off. Like I said. That's going to improve our uh, vet valve canister and all the rotted lines we'll see. Um, oh yep, we can see our flow balls all the way down to the bottom turn that's hot.

Turn the smoke machine on and off and the ball's all the way at the bottom so it's completely sealed and holding pressure. Uh, so that tells us with beyond the shadow of a doubt that whatever that small leak is is in the tank area somewhere which there's not much on this tank cuz like I say it is plastic. So we're going to have to do some investigating McCoy and I will fill around with us to see if we can find it. but that tells us our vet valve is good, the lines are good and the Uh canister is good and sealed.

The the leak is 100% in the tank area. We actually found it pretty quick. I Uh, there's not too many connections on this. we started spraying down there it is.

so we're just going to try to tighten up this hose clamp there see if that fixes it. Well, McCoy's going to get us a hose clamp there I'm not. so I'm not sold on the fact that this is a problem for the gross leak. Uh GM to fail a gross leak on these older, uh, evap systems.

It's like the gas cap off type gross leak. Usually a leak that that's tiny unless that's Wor when it's extreme cold. But we just brought this car inside. it's only 9 outside today.

um I would have thought that would have leaked worse. So I'm not really sold on the fact that we're fixing this car. uh McCoy did mention though he was back here fiddling with the gas cap. When we asked him to take the gas cap off, he was having a hard time getting it off.

but now it seems to work fine. Uh, not having put my hands on it myself. I Don't know if the cap was on there wedged cockey because it is a new cap. Um, you know the customer put a new cap on it.

It's got a new filler neck. uh, both aftermarket obviously, so you know. So I'm not really sure what was happening back there at first. If it was, you know if it was frozen and he was having a hard time getting it off? Uh, or what the story is, you go ahead and slip that right over there.

McCoy Um, so those are you know. Those are some of my thoughts what we'll do at this point. We've turned the vent valve on and off a bunch of times. It seems to open and close and seal uh each time.
and same thing with the purge. when we were waiting for that as I mentioned, McCoy and I were messing around with that. turning the purge valve on and off a bunch of times my gut tells me we probably have a purge valve that's failing. Uh, just from previous experience.

but I certainly can't. just tell the customer. Well, let's just you know, shotgun apart at it and you know hope for the best. What we can do is we can fix what we know is broken.

We know this is a leak. Perhaps the algorithm when they're determining a large leak? Maybe that was enough, but experience tells me it's not. But all we can do is make sure the EVAP system works. Uh, purge valve opens and closes.

the the vent valve opens and closes and it has the ability to seal if it does. At that point, I'm going to clear the codes, give it back to the customer, let them run. Um, the EVAP monitor Just just through normal driving winter months like this. Sometimes it's difficult to get the the full EVAP system to run until it warms up a little bit.

Uh, because there is some criteria that the computer looks for in order to run the EVAP system and usually cold weather will will knock that right out. The evet monitor will take you know a month to run. So that's my thoughts and that's what we're going to do. Smoke machine is on.

We're at full pressure or as much as the I think pressure sensor can read at this point, but we going to sprit through down again. Make sure we get up on top there, all right. Looks like we' got that sealed. So we're going to let the smoke machine run again and now see if the Uh floats all the way at the bottom.

So smoke machine on everything's sealed floats all the way at the bottom. The system is now completely sealed. We're going to take our test equipment off here, folks. so realistically, that's that's all we can do for right now.

Uh, you certainly could sell your customer uh Parts based on a hunch. Uh, I can't I mean I could, but I won't like I say I have a suspicion that the purge valve is failing intermittently typically. Uh, when I suspect that I can turn them on and off four or five times and one of those times it'll quit, We turn this on and off. You know, more than a dozen times.

Uh, from 10% all the way up to 100% duty cycle and it worked flawlessly every single time. Uh, at this point, all we can do is fix what we know is broke. Uh, don't mean to sound like a broken record myself, but we did. We fixed the leak.

Perhaps that was what was triggering his large leak? I've got a suspicion that it's not. but now that we know, uh, the EVAP system is sealed and should work as designed. Vent valve works Purge Works system sealed and the tank pressure sensor works. Uh, at this point all I can do is let the car go and let the drive cycle be run and uh, if it runs great, he can go get his inspection.
Uh, if not, we're going to have to wait if it is an intermittent. um, either a guess or B wait till it's broke. Uh, which is my preference. So that's it folks.

can't win them all. That's that folks. Uh, it's all we can do. Uh, at this point because we didn't see a gross leak, nothing was broke as we've already explained and perhaps it's deciphering that small leak that we did repair as a large leaker at some point it was worse and he was fiddling with the with the clamp on it.

It's really hard to say uh. but at this point, um, as a shop owner and as a person who just has morals I can't sit here and just you know Heath Parts at the car and hope they fix only can fix what's broke and uh, that's it. And if your comment section ain't broke, go down there and leave a comment question. Criticism: the N The Facebook you guys know where to find us at this point.

Just remember viewers, if I can do it, you can do it. Thanks for watching.

I wonder if instead of all the money that was used on salt was instead put toward the customer cost of good winter tires, would we be saving years of life on all these cars while also getting drivers to be better on the road in those wintry conditions?

My comment is not related to this video but I wanted to use the most recent video to get the most eyeballs on it. Took a 2003 Buick Lesabre 3.8 series 2 to a garage for inconsistent idleing and poor performance. $99 diagnosis was bad coil pack of which there are 3. Then I was charged for 1 hr labor to replace it. I could do it literally in 5 minutes. I asked why the 1 hr labor charge. They said they had to determine which of the 3 was bad. I argued that is literally “diagnosing” which part to replace. I paid $99 diagnostic fee and then 75% of the time charged for labor was for diagnosing again??? And it still didn’t run right so I found a plug wire laying on the exhaust manifold that burned a hole in the insulation. I replaced it and ran great. I would appreciate any feed back on whether my argument was justified.

Trouble shooting my own Saturn Ion for a small leak I hooked my smoke machine at the same place and waited for the flow ball to settle. I looked everywhere for smoke. I used snoop (soapy water) everywhere. I can NOT find any sign of a leak! I did learn something when I decided to remove the gas cap to make sure I was getting smoke all the way through the system. When I removed the cap, the flow ball on the smoke machine did not rise up off the bottom and the tank pressure remained high. I thought I was crazy! But the system stays pressurized with the cap off!! Apparently, there is a "rollover valve" in the tank at the filler neck to prevent spillage in a rollover accident. I assume it's like a swing check and will allow the fuel in but if you try to push against it, it seals tight. That's my theory. So my next step, I guess, is going to be pressurize the system from the filler neck as soon as I get an attachment to hook the smoke machine where the gas cap is. Or, is it possible that my system only leaks under a vacuum and not under pressure??? Hope to find out soon.

How can these rotted frame vehicles pass inspection there. 100% an accident waiting to happen.

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @topher8634 says:

That's the first time I've ever seen an access panel for the fuel pump on a GM. I've only seen them on foreign cars. If I was doing the fuel pump I probably would have dropped the tank.

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @JoseMartinez-tc9pr says:

Teaching McCoy integrity. And another diagnosis for me with the 1998 buick century..took your advice. Rebuild head gasket kit and timing chain kit. The only issue is the new cam shaft position sensor won't relearn after reset.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @Stover1928 says:

Great video as usual! What do you use to spray on mating surfaces to check for leak's? Also is it safe to use ordinary dish soap?

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @greggc8088 says:

One trick I've used many times for determining if a purge, or any other switching valve, is intermittently sticking is to simply throw all the Dorman parts involved in the garbage. 🤣🤣

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @stevespra1 says:

I was thinking that McCoy should have had a hard time taking the gas cap off the first time because the system was in vacuum at the time. It's probably the purge valve.

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @carguy0000 says:

Not sure if they have a oil spray business in this area,> with all these rusty vehicles it seems like it would be a gold mine for someone . jmo

I was amazed that car still has air ride. Everyone of these I have owned gets struts. The air ride is what cause them to drag the butt

I wonder if McCoy is kin to The Hillclimers "McCoy Racing"…
    I had a YZ490 they built for a stock class, I presume~
Their claim to fame was running siamesed 490's,
    980cc 2 strokes!!! …Open Class Harley Killer.

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @c.anderson3444 says:

Reminds me of my old LeSabre. I had to let it go at 300k+ miles because the driver side coil spring wanted to jump into the trunk. It was still running better than day one…those motors were insane. ..except for the faulty plastic OEM intake gasket.

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @Dee12327 says:

Eric is saving the planet, and the polar bears one GM at a time 😂

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @MrAceyJay says:

I've often wondered why you fix up these rotted out cars so they can pass inspection at the less honest shops. If you don't think it is safe to be on the road surely the correct thing to do would be refuse service?

  82. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @peter-pg5yc says:

my dose of rust.. yippie.. only here…but 10 degrees you keep it..i turned off heat for a few days house stayed 68 then 73 degrees …. ouch.. short sleeve walking

Thank you for allowing McCoy an opportunity to work in your shop. My 16 year-old son is lucky to have found a shop to let him work and learn there as well. We parents and forever consumers thank you for teaching them a trade that is and will almost certainly be necessary for decades to come.

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @BobSakamoto says:

Got a chill down my spine watching this one. From the years of running a shop, there were at least half the customers who'd be back when the intermittent finally failed. And even though you told them it was working at the time you saw it but might not be in the future, you'd get the rant of "I already brought it to you once! You're scamming me by making me come for another visit". Considering how many crooks are out there and how little people understand about their cars, I guess I can see why they'd think that. But it makes it hard to run an honest shop.

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @mikechiodetti4482 says:

The young guy will learn from the best.
You found one problem, now it's up to the customer to drive the vehicle to see what happens. Can't fix what you can't see!
Good one Mr. O. Hope young McCoy is picking up this knowledge and learning a lot!

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @ellesmerewildwood4858 says:

The 3.8 was a damn good engine, Holdens in Australia used them for many years from the VN – VY Commodore and they were reliable and robust. Then Holden introduced the 3.6 Alloytech in the VZ Commodore which was an absolute POS with soft valves, no oiling for the rear valves relying solely on splash and constant timing chain replacements every 150 ks.

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @vonJaerschky says:

You need to call McCoy "Bones".

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @elcastorgrande says:

The only way to learn a craft is to apprentice yourself to a master. McCoy is lucky.

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @sunlite8934 says:

Probably had difficulty removing the gas cap because it had a few inches of vacuum on the tank.

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @davidpotter7484 says:

That's one of the motors that should never have gone out of production.

  95. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @peters9929 says:

    Such an honest guy.

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @GNX157 says:

I’m not in 100% agreement with the ending. I think you should present your findings to the customer, 100% honesty, including that the part on the engine fails quite often, but tests good now, and let them at least have the option of you replacing it preemptively, and save them making another appointment later. Seeing that it’s a Buick, I’m going to guess it’s a retired person and they have the free time, but still. Any time you create a deviation in someone’s normal life routine (by forcing them to come back a 2nd time), you open up the possibility of altering their life in an unfortunate way, because they’re doing something and being in a place they wouldn’t ordinarily be. Something to think about.

  97. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @stevestadnik9206 says:

I have found more evap leaks with soapy water than seeing smoke. Lots of Hyundais with cracked plastic fuel pumps found the same way you were spraying pump. Keep up the good fight.

Hi Eric and McCoy, this young man hit the lottery,I hope he is paying attention!( Ahh grass hopper)
