Noticed my rear brake shoes were not self adjusting Turns out the previous owner put the self adjusters on the wrong side. It adjusted itself so far down it totally ground the teeth from the adjuster
I had an โ86 F350 for many years and probably did rear brakes three or four times. Always had to adjust the brakes on one side as they wore. Finally I decided to stare at the problem until I figured it out. The little adjuster pawl thing wasnโt working on one side because the truck had two adjusters marked โLโ. So the pawl was facing out away from the ratchet wheel on the right side. Sometimes ya just gotta stare at it for awhile.
Literally the first thing I was taught about doing drum brakes.
I've seen this many times over the years.
This would be the correct way IF you were backing up all the time.
The e brake cable is not on or on the wrong side of the spring
Your primary shoe is on the rear.
Also, the right spring is shoved into the wheel cylinder
I never knew! Thank you for the tip!
My previous boss used to say โfunny how you need a license to cut hair but you donโt need one to work on vehiclesโ
Good point for all Knuckle draggers to follow.
Its like doing a wheel alignment by using the tires, if one wheel is OFF the other wheel you are trying to match is going to be OFF …
Thanks ๐
That's a really big shoe!
RTFM or at least glance at the pictures. A good mechanic spends a lot of time on the toilet, reading manuals and trade magazines.

Sometimes people replace only one shoe…..
Looks about like my brother in laws car.
alldata is your friend!
Big shoe doesn't always go on the back. My jeep manual says big shoe on the front 1948 jeep cj2a
Jeep drivers are truly national treasures.
Those Jeep people. Probably paid $600 per side for โextra brake clearanceโ when off roading!!!
primary shoe is the short shoe which goes towards the front!
Todayโs video was like a drive-by, greatness well educated gone !
My Dad always said โShort shoe forward.โ Never forgot that.
Does this count for the Parking brake pads also?
Good advice as some of my friends learned in high school. The person who you're copying off of may have the wrong answer!๐๐
They switched the brake pads and it still worked? Who'd a thunk??๐
Remember BOB, big on back.
Brake shoes are like mullets. Short in the front long in the back ๐
Tall choir boys stand in the back
Ditto! Got burnt on a Ford Ranger, adjusters wouldn't work as assembled. Left was on the right and right was on the left!
I like my service manual almost as much as utube
I always do one side at a time because I only have one floor jack…
I never knew.

Itโs not Friday yet here ๐ darn kids putting their shoes on backwards ๐คฃ
I knew right away, done many brake shoes..
Primary shoe is put on facing the front of the vehicle. Secondary is facing the back of vehicle.
When I do drums I take a pic before taking it apart
Big O is the man.
Short shoe to the front !!!
