When we had a glass company replace a sunroof glass and seal they used a heat gun to put it on. I think that was to soften it or maybe to shrink it. Not sure. They put on some sort of stuff that I think was just high dollar Armor All on the seal before they closed it. Took the guy about 2 hours to align the tracks as 1 side went back farther than the other and when closing it would bind up. I told him the tracks were probably out of alignment and he just adjusted it with the screws since like this one the holes were larger than needed. It worked until we traded it in without leaks but 2 hours to replace the glass and seal because, like you started he wanted to put the glass in before the seal. It happens. He told me that several cars since 2010 had an issue with the glass exploding in the heat and to leave the inside open so air could flow and heat wouldn't build up between the inside cover and the glass. Been doing that for years without exploding sunroofs so maybe someone else who reads this will do the same and save that $500 plus cost for a new sunroof glass and seal plus labor. Take care.
I think you could’ve made your job a whole lot easier by running the point of a small pick through the groove, then lubricating the seal with spray silicone lubricant.
Hay Ray. Try a heat gun next time on the rubber. I'm an equipment maintenance tech. When we have to install o-rings in a tight groove we put it in a 150 degree oven for 10 minutes. They pop right in.
Love the channel! Thx for your video's.
Dawn dishwashing soap mixed with water is your friend when it comes to rubber seals. Wearing clean gloves or having very clean hands is mandatory when working around headliners. Not sure how you're going to deal with those greasy marks you left on at least 3 different spots I noticed from the before and after on the headliner.
I don't know what dielectric grease is but I have found that silicone lubricant makes stuff as slick as eel snot. Worked wonders when pulling dash cam cable through a grommet on my yaris hatch.
use lube to slide it in… those short lasting lubes… even shampoo water. you noob
Haven't done it myself, but I've seen others place a string in the groove, all the way around, before fitting the seal. Pulling the string out — gently — at a right angle to the seal helps make the edge pop over the lip instead of compressing itself against the edge of the glass. Hope that's helpful.
I had a lot of respect before for mechanics but ive got even more for them now
I'm a little surprised you didn't check that the drains were clear.
Hell Ray the new screws in the box with the seal kinda suggest the glass must be removed to fit it must be your first day
use warm soapy water to lubricate most rubber seals for installation, silicone grease will stay there and might facilitate the seal popping back out if it gets a bit of tree sap or road grime partly adhering the seal to the edge of the roof it can yank one out that is a bit loose fitting, maybe a greased one also.
All these guys saying to use ANY 'grease' of any kind on any of these is a fool…..if the base of the grease is a solvent to the rubber of the gasket, it WILL dissolve over time….that makes a HUUUUGE mess…..do not ask me how I know this to be true!!!
Silicone spray…real, JUST silicone, silicone spray works wonders on these kinds of things after you let them sit in the hot flowiduha sun for 10 minutes(lived in central flowiduha for 20+ years) so…yeah.
sunroofs can be a problem.
Great repair and video @Rainman Ray's Repairs
I see
Moon roofs move and tilt.. Sun roofs don't move and don't tilt they are stationary… that is a Moon roof @Rainman Ray's Repairs
Did you just say death blow hammer?
The rubber seal is preformed & corner-centric (like fitted sheets) & requires you to stretch-fit the corners, seat the straight linear edges & finally form fit the last corner.
Also?, Your dirty hands got the headliner all dirty around the perimeter of the sunroof opening. & although you sprayed it down you left vestiges of grease-spots (carb-cleaner needed). Hopefully you came back & cleaned that off?.
BTW?: We really need more “cow-bell” brake-cleaner in all of your video’s….😂
Hey love watching the videos! I work at range Rover and I understand the pain of Qc-ing panels and "Getting rid of the evidence". Nonetheless great videos as always and wish everyone in Florida the best.
Didn’t you make a video a while back in response to criticism that you don’t wear gloves to prove it doesn’t come off onto peoples interiors?
But then leave huge oily fingerprints on their headliner?? You’re a great mechanic but you suck at detailing man.
Never wet clean a headliner and then rub the dirt around. When it dries it’ll be a much larger stain with a clean halo.
Only Ray repairs glass with a hammer!
hey Ray, if you have trouble putting on those seals, there are YouTube videos that can show you how to install them.
Looks like a Genuine GM pain in the ARCE!
mmm..
Sunroofs are the absolute worst invention for cars ever. The amount of failures vs. enjoyment (or even any use at all) has got to be about 5000:1. They should just call them leak hatches.
Thats $5000 Alpaca is the funniest shit you said ever! Make it a fucking shirt!
TY
I'm sure that's the way they did it at the factory! HaHaHa. Not really…They used a bigger hammer.
You should have used some heat on the seal. Doesn't always work but in my experience most of the time it helps
You are finally coming out of your PHSD from Ian. You were struggling a little in those first videos. That seal was a more difficult job than I would have thought. No wonder the owner brought it in "ran out of time", more likely patience.
Alright everyone, let's band together and chip in and get Ray that challenger he wants and no not the flood damaged one but a new one. Color shall be blue, so you know it's good.
Makes me glad I don’t own a vehicle with a sunroof. More problems than they’re worth.
RAY FOR PRESIDENT!
Does anyone know what that cleaner was he used at the end?
We can see
If you spray soapy water on the seal will lubricate it and make it much easier to install.
Ray.. always soak gaskets in a bucket of hot water. I have to do freezer door gaskets that way..awesome the job way easier. Stay safe and be well
What an AWESOME install. Great Job Ray!!
Some rubber gloves to keep from getting the headliner dirty would have helped.
I'm surprised the hammer hits didn't flatten the seal and cause gaps which would leak.
Ray, I hate to ask a stupid question, but don’t the intake people know to ask the basic questions that will make the mechanics job easier and more efficient for everyone involved?
Nice job, and that customer should be happy. Only thing I may have done differently, would be to raise the mechanism just a tiny tint nanosecond of drive, before tightening the screws, just to apply that little extra closing pressure for when the seal beds in.
Seals 🦭 🦭 🦭 🦭 🦭 🦭 🦭??????
And, you call yourself a rainman. Sledge, man. Sledge!
What you need is a can of brake cleaner and a pry bar lol
Couldn't tell my seeing eye dog was outside LOL
🖖👍👍👍👍👍🖖❤️
Can you use that dialectic grease for other things🤔
I’m sure some degree of confidence was required to hit that glass. I wouldn’t have had it.
much love Ray ☝️☝️👍❤️
